I may have a few ideas... I know a few scrapped characters from other MK games. I think it might be interesting to use some of them as future characters:
Michael Grimm: Basically the next-generation Johnny Cage. He's an MMA superstar known for his unique fighting style, which includes a variation of the shadow kick and a force ball with two variations; a projectile and as a powered up punch. His powers suggest that he may have some relation to Johnny Cage. Unlike Johnny Cage, Grimm doesn't live to be loved; he doesn't mind the attention, but what he really loves is a good fight. Michael Grimm was the name given to Johnny Cage in the early stages of MK1.
Yoshitsune Minamoto: Although he appears to be a young japanese man, Minamoto is actually thousands of years old. For much of his life, he had traveled between EarthRealm and his home in Outworld with the aid of various sorcerers and dieties. Although his intentions aren't yet known, it is believed that Minamoto brought together elite EarthRealm warriors and formed a group to protect the realm. The god Raiden would later reform this group into the white Lotus society, located near the Shaolin temples in China. More recently, he posed as a holyman for the Dragon King, Onaga. He was primarily responsible for ambushing Blaze, which ultimately resulted in his corruption and nullified Taven and Daegon's quest. He may of done this to prevent the warriors fighting at Armageddon from dying or losing their powers. Apparently, he knows something about the tournament that nobody else does. He wears black and green pants and a green headband ("Hornbuckle" from the pit 2). The name comes from an early MK character that would later become Liu Kang.
Charlotte Wright: Personality-wise Charolette would be the Sonya Blade of the new Mortal Kombat tournement. Unlike Sonya, she doesn't fight for justice or revenge; she fights to survive. Years ago, she was accused of a crime she didn't commit; and it was a pretty serious charge. Although the specifics of the allegations aren't known to the audience, it is heavily implied that the crime had someting to do with the Black Dragon, which have evolved from arm-dealing thugs into a terrorist orginization feared by the world. Although Charolette was never a part of the gang, some of her acquaintances were. Because of this, she mysteriously recieved an invitation for the tournament, where she would be (almost) safe from the law, and thanks to an exceptionally violent past, safe from the other combatants as well. Unlike Sonya, she is not outwardly hostile to the other combatants initially, as she believes they are more or less normal people. This would change as she begins to learn about the tournament. This name didn't come from anything Mortal Kombat; I just made it up.
Nathan Blade: You may notice something familiar about the name of this guy... Yes that's right, he's a decendant of MK's first lady, Sonya! Like Sonya, Nathan is a member of the Special Forces, and he's been sent to the island to pursue a "dangerous criminal" (see above). However, the vendetta isn't as personal as it was with Sonya and Kano; it's just another day on the job for Nathan. Early on in the tournament he pretty much gets his butt kicked by guess-who, but he doesn't die. Instead, the so-called criminal lets him go and he realizes that they had been going after the wrong person, and furthermore, he had just gotten himself stuck on an island with a bunch of psychos and no way out. He then starts to investigate the island and get information on the other fighters. To his suprise, he eventually finds the man the special forces were really after the whole time.
Trevor Zane: Tame. Mellow. Charismatic. These are words that describe what Trevor Zane pretends to be. And he does it pretty well. It isn't until he arrives at the island that he reveals his brutish animalistic traits that only the cunning, manipulitive Black Dragon boss could posess. Zane takes after the man, the myth, the legend himself, Kano, the man who was responsible for making the Black Dragon what it is today. In contrast to Kano, I picture Zane as a more introverted character who's psycotic nature comes out when he's either fighting or gets REALLY mad. I borrowed the last name Zane from MK Rebirth's Alan Zane/ Baraka and Trevor came from Trevor Goddard who played Kano in the MK movie.
Liu Kang: As his friends grew old and eventually died, Liu Kang went generations without aging due to his status as Mortal Kombat champion, which he considers a curse. Liu Kang had long sought a replacement, but everyone thus far was annihilated in Mortal Kombat. To further complicate the situation, the tournament recently fell into Outworld's hands once again, making the chance of any EarthRealm contestant slim to none. However, seeing the resemblance between the new generation of warriors and his old friends and himself renews his hope both for Earthrealm and himself. He also senses that time is ready to repeat itself; The new outworld threat is likely to be as urgent as Shao Kahn's and Kang knows that these new warriors' lives will become intertwined with the tournament. Liu Kang works behind the scenes to help the new warriors prepare for their destiny. Liu Kang is usually seen with his face and body wrapped in white cloth and dressed in black clothing with a red trim. He has lightning-patterned scar (from the end of MK9) that can be seen when the wraps are removed. Liu Kang essentially becomes the Raiden of the new generation. Raiden would either have been corrupted like he was in MK Armageddon and killed, or he'd still be good and be at the new tournament in a power struggle with Liu Kang.
So that's about all the characters I can come up with now since I'm getting kind of tired... I may have gotten a bit carried away with the backstories. But you're welcome to borrow some of these ideas and I hope some of them work for your story. Good luck with your work, man.

Yeah, don't worry about that. This is probably the best forum to post your idea in.
