What about a female ninja? Although I would definitely say that there are way less female characters than male characters in Mortal Kombat, and even fewer that are actually good. And a cyber ninja would probably be aesthetically better than ANOTHER normal ninja, even though they haven't really shared that many similarities since the 2D games. And there hasn't been a female cyber ninja, so I would vote for that.

Maybe Khrome is a member of the Lin Kuei around the time of MK4. After the first batch of cybers failed they decided to do a cyber initiative 2.0, this time making them out of liquid metal, and Khrome is the first in line.
