It's good for a first try, but there are a few things you need to fix.

First off, why is the "K" in Link smaller than the other letters?

Link should not be partially transparent. The viewer needs something to focus on.

An easy way to cut out pics (with full control) is to use a quickmask to paint your selection. I don't know about other programs, but it's quite easy in Photoshop. In PS, just hit the Q key to go into quickmask mode. Then select you tool of choice and color your selection. You can use any tools and almost any filters on the selection. A lot of people dont know that selections dont have to be solid. They can have variable transparency.

Don't feel overwhelmed if you don't understand everything at first. Programs like Photoshop are massive. It could take years to master everything there is to offer. I don't know about NoobSaibot, but I've been using PS since version 2.0. I still don't know everything :/

Hyuga said it all, like he said, Link shouldn't be transparent.
I think you should change the font for the the name "Link".

Peace.

This one is a LOT better. I like the slight blur you put on some of his edges. It looks like he's moving a bit. The blur on the top part of the shield is off, but not by much. The only thing I would suggest is to put a simple layer style on the text. To do this, double click on the layer you want the effect on (in this case, the layer with the text), then select the effects you want to use. I suggest a 1 pixel stroke with a darker green color. It'll make the text easier to read. Anything else would be overkill on the text in this pic.
