Here was my original fake picture kontest entry that I never went through completing. I scrapped the idea for two reasons:
1) Boring background I've used before (thanks Veno)
2) The new background didn't make sense to have a chain hanging from a nonexistent ceiling.

Here was the first attempt:

I thought Saibot's pose looked retarded and the Scythe was a joke. Editing the guts from Sub-Zero is what inspired me to do my Shinnok vs Jax fake and having his intestines spilling out from his body.

Half-way through the first draft, I went ahead and changed Saibot's pose and the manner in which Sub-Zero was being executed:

So, Veno bashed my background, and rightfully so. He motivated me to create my own and gave me some well needed pointers:

In this fake I added some more editing on Sareena but not a whole lot. As I said previously, it made no sense to have Saibot's chained Scythe floating around in the air connected to absolutely nothing. The previous background at least had a ceiling of some kind. I wanted to change the fatality AGAIN but by this time I lost interest in this fake and decided to do a Shinnok fake.

Here was the first Sareena fake I made so very long ago... looking through my old fakes actually inspired the creation of this new one.

I actually really like this background, especially the use of MKM props and such. The only thing that bugs me is the front side of the bridge doesn't seem to have the appropriate shading/lighting/whatever to pull of that it is a separate side of the bridge in a couple of areas. This is very noticable by the three gray blocks in the middle... they ruin the illusion of depth around it and make it seem too flat, if that makes sense.

The Sareena sprite is pretty well done too. The design and editing look like it could have came from UMK3/Trilogy if she would have been in the game (though, we'd probably just get a straight palette swapped Kitana if she would have been). Your sprite was close enough that had I no reference to the sprites of her in MKM or the UMK3 female ninjas, I would have asked if you ripped Sareena from MKM, it was that "believable" in terms of the games.

But believable is one thing, if you're going from the artistic standpoint, she would need some work to be more clear, clean, crisp and detailed, but that's just because I would have done so.

The chain and scythe bother me because they seem too bland and plastic looking, try more distinct blacks and whites to get that metallic look (but you probably know that). Contrast, baby, contrast.

The minimal edits on Noob are effective and appropriate, but some areas of the sprite just seems too...loud and grainy in terms of shading (nitpicking).

The blood effects are okay, but there needs to be more to it. Not in quantity, but just more vibrancy or depth to aid the eye so it doesn't seem like bright red paint being thrown around.

Also, your Shinnok fake was much better, and I am critiquing a fake that didn't make your cut, so take what advice you'd like if it helps, but I'm sure you know more than enough by now.

You're still one of the most talented artists I've had the pleasure of following while posting, lurking, and browsing this site and others.

Hopefully you will be able to continue making stuff as long as possible, though I do understand that priorities and other things in life makes it difficult to do so.

This reminds of the time when fakes where supposed to actually look like things that could happen in the games. Refreshing to see, considering where the outlook on fakes are now. I could bring up the whole debate of what we consider "fakes" to be aren't really "fakes," but rather pieces of art that are based in sprites. I very rarely ask myself if what I create could pass for something that could have been in the 2D games. Personal artistic choice within the medium I guess.

Until next time..

Thanks for all the pointers, bro.

I might touch it up and finish the fake once I've completed my current flash animation.

I have to budget my time more wisely...
