Does anybody know how I might go about ripping the 3d models from one of the 3d MK games (especially Deception and MK:SM, but any really, including MK4/Gold)?

I'm imaging the only way to do this is to extract them off of the game discs. Which isn't a problem because I own most of the game discs in question, mostly for ps2 (although I have Gold for Dreamcast).

From my own investigations, all the files I'm interested in seem to be "zipped" in pak files. These .pak files seem to be like a zip or tar file, but using its own format. This format is not the same as what Quake uses for it's pak files, i've tried those tools and they don't work.

So my first question is how do I extract the files from the pak file?

After that, I'll then need to convert them to be loadable in blender (or some other free 3d modeller). Then I'll probably want to also extract the fighting styles and see if I can't turn them into skeleton animations or something. Then I can have some real fun.

Hmm. Interesting. To rip PAK files you gotta get some file converter. Then they may be rippable.

Yes, I realize this. Either that or I have to write one. I haven't been able to find any program that can extract them. I've found programs that can extract some types of .paks, but not the ones used in DA and Deception.

I have a feeling I'll have to figure it out myself.

Yes. They're just dvd-roms. My XP laptop can read them fine. How do you think PS2 emulators work?

Also, there's a program that can play movies used on the ps2. I think it's called flvplayer. You can then copy things like the ending of Shaolin Monks, or the Cooking with Scorpion video to your desktop and play them in flvplayer. I think there are tools that convert them to more common types too.

Thanks smile

If there's nothing that can currently read them, something else that would help would be a ps2 emulator with a debugger or disassembler. Then I could step through the code and figure out how it parses the file. Know of any?

Just figured out something. You know how MKW gets videos of such Fatalities in the 3D games? We can use the same thing that they use and rip each sprite frame by frame. grin

Frame by frame? With 60 frames per second? No.

Um, no. That won't work. That gives you many raster images. That does not give you vector graphics :P

Now, if you're a good 3d artist, maybe you can recreate the originals from that. But then if you're that good, you probably don't need to bother ripping individual frames.

Yeah, I think it involves using an emulator with a built in debugger, setting a breakpoint, and stepping through the code until you figure out how it reads the file.

Hi, I had something to unpack those .pak files, but I lost it when I formatted. There is a program that will give you the character files.. you gotta search quite a bit. I might be able to find it again..

If you can find it again, you'll be my hero. I have searched quite a bit and i haven't found anything that actually worked.

So now I have all the .ssf files out of the .pak file. Anyone have any clue what to do with the ssf files?
