Three months ago, I announced the ending of my comic, The Chronicles of Noob-Smoke. Why? Because of personal reasons, like scheduling, work, and other things. Recently, I have discovered that my schedule is not as tight. Also, I have been getting some mail regarding the demand for the comic to return. Thus, I recruited Deadly Dragon, and we put our heads together to design the new comic for the returning TCONS series.
However, this comic will be unlike anything you have seen before. Better graphics, better dialogue, and a completely new storyline. It follows closely with Konquest. I am also telling you that we're taking this in a new direction, by cutting down on humor completely. This is a new take, a more refreshing look. The humor is not totally gone, there is wit, dry sarcasm, and even a familiar comic relief character returning.
Here it is, Episode 36.
We are back in business.
Don't know what TCONS is? Want to rewatch the classic first series? Go here.

Yeah!!!!!! Glad it's back!! Thanks for starting it again. Had you submitted this through the actual Submission thingy, I would rate 5/5. But still, 5/5 anyway.

It's Taven.
Anyhow, great comic!

I did not edit the sprites, Deadly Dragon did all that. He also does backgrounds too.

Now this is some good stuff. The action comes alive nicely for still frames

I'm sorry but if you don't like the comic, don't read it. I like to focus on different aspects, like making stuff more serious. MK comic isn't supposed to be funny all the time.

I think my biggest critique would be that there seems to be a lot of photoshop elements, but not a lot of story elements. Which is probably where I think trying to do 'straight' sprite strips falls down.
They're not original, unseen artwork which is probably where the 'humor' sprite strip culture took over. You can do something brief, and quick with it, and it justifies itself.
Here there's sort of an uncomfortable relationship between smoothed out photoshop tools, and frames spent on single indicative brightly coloured font effects. But it's all right next to, and utilizing what is essentially low grade pixel sprites.
It's an uncomfortable marriage, in my opinion.
Storywise, it probably reads better in one hit. Right now, perhaps for dramatic purposes, it's moving along quite slowly. This latest strip really didn't further the story. I'm guessing this is to set up a fight between Taven and Smoke -- but really, you could've just about skipped straight to that out of the previous strip where he agrees to help the Lin Kuei.
Which, I guess is also another qualm of doing a serious story with sprite edits. The dramatic pause before Taven and Smoke face-off could be justified with original art that deliberately made some kind of visual build, or reference.
With sprites, you just don't have that, and it becomes a little bit of a lull.
Good stuff all in all, though.
I think my issues are definitely more about the logic and fundamentals, more than the graphics themselves. The sprite edits are a bit wonky, but you're using the existing sprites pretty well, and to interesting effect.
The MK3 background for the Lin Kuei temple was interesting. I like it.
Oh, and as far as them reading better in one sitting.
Maybe you could edit in an archive list into the first post, so people who haven't seen the previous thirty-odd can check them out, and get a better frame of reference.
