K, moved this here because the future MK room is a bit dead.
Alright, I like my idea so I gotta share it with someone. (Who knows, maybe Boon is bored and searching the web, finds this and says Brilliant, give him a job. Ha, I'd prolly say no.) Anyways for my MK, I would want it about 50 to 100 years after Armageddon. More or less the end of MKA saw an all out war for every fighter going at it with Blaze in the middle. At the climax, Blaze unexpectedly explodes in a white light. The outcome and reasoning is unknown. What is known is every MK fighter is dead, heroes and villains alike. And the elder gods can no longer see their realms. All is blackness to their omnipotence. Thus over time they personally walked among the worlds in search of worthy warriors to imbue with power and raise them as informants of their worlds. Soon a network is built and the gods continue their reign. But tradition must be followed and the tournament must go on. Sending the lesser gods, warriors are chosen to compete for immortality, glory, power or closure. The time has come for the Earth realm to crown a champion and defend against fellow newly made victors. Now is the time for Mortal Kombat. So more or less, it's a whole new cast. At the moment I only have 3 characters in mind. One important part though is that Earth has not advanced technologically but has taken a path of following it's roots and past traditions. So while major cities may be somewhat advanced for the most part the rest of the world exists in the past and follows stronger morals and appreciation for life and the unexplained. (magic) My three characters are obviously based on prior fighters, and I would think they'd have too otherwise it wouldn't feel like mortal kombat.
First: Is a Shaolin monk. Not like Liu or Lao though, but like a real Shaolin monk. Bald, wrapped in robes of white and orange, and silent. Very fast character. No name yet. None of my characters do. Special moves would consist of smokey illusions of dragons and tigers.
Second: The ninja. Gotta have one. But again more traditional style. No bright colors. Ninja are suppose to be stealthy, bright yellow isn't stealthy! So decked out in all black, maybe very fine gold trim on some parts. Picture the ninja's in Batman Begins and it'd be about right. Solid black eyes too. Uses a sickle and chain and has a capture move similar to the spear. Also the only character not invited to the tournament, just comes. Has knowledge of the past tournament. (see where this is going?)
Last: And my favorite. Would be the sorcerer. Better yet, a Necromancer. An albino, with a animal skull necklace. Pale white skin, long gray white hair that's pushed back and kinda wild with random dreads, white eyes, and chops. (always liked chops, can't grow them myself) Dried bloody bandages wrapped around his wrists (muay thai style) and shredded black and rust pants. (crap he steals from graves) Maybe some tattoos, and just dirty looking. Covered in dust from graveyards. (I'll draw him soon) Moves consist of fast animations of the undead striking, in a bold royal purple glow. Fatality would be raising three zombies at random from the past MK games as they tear and drag down the opponent into the ground.
Of course one or two of the lesser gods would be present too. And the final boss would be a victor from one of the other realms.
Special moves would be few though in terms of one shots. Maybe three that you can do right away. Maybe lock some in the Krypt. But I think 4 or 5 moves should be unique and incorporated into combos. Not dial up combos, but if a specific combo is connected it follows with a special secret move automatically. Say the ninja, nails a 6 hit combo that sends the opponent outward he then automatically sends out a spear and we hear, Get over here! (ha, guess I gave away my ninja) Plus characters could have two endings. First one is picture based like the last few, then once you've beaten the game with everyone, you can then beat it again and get second endings that are animated and have a much deeper story. And yes beating the game with key characters explains what happened at the end of MKA. (the ninja and the necromancer, aka Scorpion and Shang Tsung)
So yea that's my idea. It's more detailed in my head, but it's a start. I'll draw my necromancer and think of some names before too long. If there's a decent response to this thread I'll keep going with it.
My MKA outcome. The elder gods fearing the power of the Kombatants decide to solve their problems by making them all fight to the death with the false hope of ultimate power. They send their creature Blaze to eliminate those that survive. It's while the war is young that the gods plans unravel thanks to one demonic woman known only as Sareena. A demoness from Outworld understands the minds of the Elder beings comes prepared, holding an old decayed book. The journal of the only being who can stop the gods. The undying Shang Tsung. As blood runs freely, she tracks down the Sorcerer as he fights to survive against his greatest nemesis Liu Kang. Without a second thought Sareena throws herself between the battle and is speared among both fighters weapons. She yearningly looks at Tsung and says "take it." As Liu and Shang look on confused Shang Tsung grants her request taking her soul onto himself. It's then that he drops his sword and submit's to Kang in hopes of Mercy and understanding of what once was.
Sareena's soul reminds Shang of his earliest past, when he was the champion of Mortal Kombat, and his loss to Kung Lao. The original Kung Lao was chosen by the gods and imbued with abnormal powers to bring Shang down. The elder gods disliked Shang Tsung as champion as he did not show the proper respect. So they destroyed him pyshically and mentally. In the years that followed Shang Tsung would learn darker arts unimaginable to help bring the gods reign to an end. People would no longer be the tools and play things of higher beings. He would build and army of souls within him in hopes they too would understand his plight and help him in his crusade. His souls were not slaves but lived inside him, seeing what he sees and learning all. But over time with the souls of great heroes were the souls of villains. And the darkness of their hearts blinded the sorcerer. Power became the only means of conquest.
It was the journal that held his true feelings. And it's return to Shang released his own true soul. He knew he was the only one who could stand up to the gods but had to atone for his sins. So he left his fate up to Liu Kang, who held back Shang's evil with defeat. When Kang saw the old man submit, the good in him could not let him take the sorcerer's life. Instead he asked why, and learned the truth of Mortal Kombat and the Elder gods. Knowing the gods were watching, the two went seperate ways to hide in dark corners and speak of the gods plans with those that listened. Trust was harder for evil, but soon everyone came to believe the duo. The farce needed to end. Even the evil, the strong, the pure, and the weak minded knew deep down that no one was to survive this tournament. So as the suns fell along the ridge line, the fighters fought one another. While Blaze watched on men and women fell. When only a handful remained Blaze arose to finish the job. It was then that Shang stepped forward and completed a spell he once found that had powerful and dangerous outcome. He released every soul he had taken in a large white explosion. In doing so he shielded the realms to the gods eyes for a millennium. Once the light settled every fighter was standing. Every fallen opponent remained alive and strong but one. And dying and defeated husk remained of Shang Tsung. The true war began. Every kombatant that had entered Mortal Kombat in decades rose as one to slay the fire demon. But gods are not fools. Blaze without thought, unleashed his energies in a great stream of light and pain. Piercing the bodies of the warriors all around him. Death was almsot complete when Liu Kang whispered, "take us." And the souls of 58 strong soldiers rose and infused Shang Tsung back to life. And when the smoke and ruby tinted ash cleared, Blaze, no longer the giant beast but the protector, remained. Looking to the heavens he wished to return, but alas a dull pain pierced his heart as a sword drove him through. All he heard was a whisper, "Your Soul is Mine."
K, fingers hurt. You like? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

The main story is okay. I think it's waste to lose ALL the past characters as many had good potential. The reasoning behind why everyone is fighting is decent, but I would hope the individual characters' stories would have more to them to add some complexity to the storyline.
I would try to do more with the design of the Shaolin monk and ninja. Added realism is a plus, but they sound like they'd be very boring looking. And your sorcerer sounds a lot like Quan Chi. An albino necromancer with tattooes? That's Quan Chi. The only difference is your character has hair. I find this ironic given your sig.
On the Armageddon outcome....
Sareena isn't from Outworld, she's from the Netherealm. And how does she, of all people, have Shang Tsung's journal? They have nothing to do with each other. Also having her give up her soul to Tsung is a total waste of her character. And why is her soul so special that it turns Shang Tsung into a good guy?
On Shang Tsung, I do not buy him as savior of the realms at all. You can't instantly transform Shang Tsung from a conniving, narcissistic Starscream into a tragic and deep-down-inside noble Darth Vader. Not buying it. I can understand giving Tsung a key part in Armageddon's outcome, but this too much. Don't care for the Armageddon outcome in general. Also everyone giving up their souls so Tsung can stop Blaze....total waste of many characters and no closure whatsoever.
You basically turned the entire MK storyline into one big Shang Tsung stroke job.
The basics look okay, but I'd rethink the Armageddon outcome and flesh out the current story and characters a bit more.

Holy crap someone read this! Thanks for the critique. I know it's based around Shang a lot, but only the outcome. The future game would have very little to do with him other than he's trying to build an army on the sidelines. I honestly think MK8/9 needs to be completely new though. Potential or not, the current MK is too stale. My whole Shang story though is based around Nordic mythology. Kinda like turning his body into Valhalla, where none of the warriors are slaves but awaiting to return and bring the elder gods down. He definitely isn't a savior, just full of revenge. Adding Sareena in was just cuz I couldn't decide on anyone that would actually do that part so it's more of a pull a name out of a hat.
For my designs, yea I didn't give too much info. Think like this.
Shaolin Monk
Ninja (which should be simple, ninjas are not all armored and flashy. Kills the concept)
For my Necro, yea I guess I can see how that'd be taken. I was thinking more like Powder, with a faint tilted Anhk tattooed on his abs. Plus I never disliked Quan's design. That was kickass. The character itself is shit.
But again, thanks for taking the time to read this.
