The time frames in both movies took place AFTER Kung Lao's reign as champion, and Liu Kang was the decendant. That's why Lao has never appeared. And there were two places where Jax had appeared in MK1. One where he and Sonya were raiding the club, and two where he and Sonya were spying on Pier 40 where Shang Tsung's boat appeared, where Kano boarded. The last words you hear from Jax were as follows just before Sonya runs after Kano on the dragon-headed boat:

"Sonya! Don't get on that thing! HEY SONYA!!!"

Dispite it being painfully obvious, the guy meant the Kung Lao from the games, as in, the present Kung Lao.

Scripted, but not filmed, is a scene in which the guys get one day to mourn Art Lean's death. His body is put next to the statue of the great Kung Lao.
