Realised this along with my Johnny Cage thread in the same viewing of the movie. Does not seem to make sense to me.

Shang Tsung has Liu Kang and Kitana fight eachother.

-Kitana is a known threat
-Kitana is the rightful heir ot the throne of outworld
-Liu Kang is considered deadly as he is the descendant of Kung Lao
-Shang said he DOES NOT want them to join forces and they have never been so close to absolute victory.

So he pits Kang Against Kitana? Whaaaa?

This will clearly allow them to communicate which he does not want. Upon Kitana giving him advice where she CLEARLY knows his next opponent, Shang gets mad and continues to do so.

If Shang Tsung feared the teaming of the 2, firstly, it was a bad idea to plan that match. But then it would make perfect sense if they were to fight to the death like EVERY OTHER FIGHT!

Shang wants both of them dead and none of them to team up. So he pits them ina fight against eachother and DOESNT force it to the death? all his troubles could ahve been solved right there....

Does not make sense to me.

Thoughts?

Perhaps Tsung only wished it to be a mere sparing match. Or he thought Kitana would killl Liu kang in a fight so he sent her to finish Kang, just as he would send Sub Zero later on. Evidently, Shang's need to have Liu done for is desperate throughout the entire movie, and there is just barely noticeable twinge of fear in his behaviour and voice when he is faced with the fact that he must fight Liu Kang (when Liu challenges him).

As for finishing off Kitana, I don't know why he would want that. She is his own emperor's step-daughter, and she was even given the strongest of ninjas, Reptile, as a bodyguard.... Which can also explain Shang's preventing Liu Kang from finishing/ mauling her in the end of their fight.

I think you have mispercieved the information.

Shang Tsung reffers to Kitana as "our most dangerous adversary"

He then tells reptil to "watch her carefully, keep her away from these humans".

Not a body guard, a stalker and manipulater. Kitana was the rightful heir to the throne of outworld which means it was taken form her wrongfully. Kahn took the throne by force. Why Kitana is still alive puzzles me.

So it still does not amke sense.

And for Killing Kitana, it would ahve prevented her giving Liu Kang the guidance that he would ahve died without thus giving the victory to outworld and the domination of earthrealm.

Shang Tsung pit them against each other because he wanted Liu to perceive Kitana as an enemy and hopefully kill her. Or vice versa, that would have been good too. He didn't anticipate that they would be able to talk when they're supposed to be fighting, so Shang forced them to stop fighting before Kitana could help him further.

it's that simple.
