Hello.
This topic is one that I didn't wish to bring up at first, since it involves doing something behind official channels, and thus not giving Threshold the profit from making the MK films. But much like the deleted first five minutes of The Serpent And The Ice, I'm finding out that there's no other choice as Threshold's official releases suck.
As such, I mention the great, first MK movie. I saw this classic on the big screen, and then was unpleasantly surprised when I found that several scenes were removed when the movie was bought on tape and DVD. The biggest one I remember is where Johnny Cage is talking to Art Lean before Art's fight against Goro, and JC is giving AL tips about how to try to win the battle.
Now, ten years after the fact, there's a good chance I'll never be able to find those deleted minutes, unless a third MK film is greenlighted, and maybe the full MK film will be released amidst the hype. Then again, with all the utter garbage that's being released on the big screen (cough, Dead Or Alive, cough), it seems that the audience wants trash and not quality films, so I'm hopeful, but not optimistic.
Having said that, I remembered that it may be possible to have access to the original, full version MK movie if one were to have found a pirated copy from 1995. Pirated films are recorded live from the big screen, after all. So if Threshold won't release this film officially, is there anyone out in the MK fanbase who happened to come across one of these copies? And if so, can we discuss it?

That's weird. The PAL VHS has those scenes.
There's still no DVD release for the first MK film in region 4 (where I am).
It'd be great to get some decent releases.
All we have here is Annihilation (barebones, no extras), and Defenders of the Realm.
It'd be great to see some MK Conquest on DVD here, and if there aren't extras on any of the other region DVDs, maybe get Bernhardt and the gang together to do some.
The movies could use some extras, obviously, too.
If there aren't materials leftover from filming, it'd be definitely nice to at least see some new cast interviews, and some indepth extras examining the history of the games.
Stuff like the 'kards' in Deception, and the little behind the scenes clips from Deadly Alliance are nice, but it'd be really fun to go deep into the history of MK.
Some of the online Threshold fightclub clips from MK.com wouldn't be bad for extras, too.

Hello, Mick.
Thanks for your reply, dude. But I have to disagree with you in what you said. I've been to the US and Great Britain, and the tape and DVD versions in both countries are missing the scene where Johnny talks to Art before the Art Vs Goro fight.
Don't get me wrong. I wish they did. But no such luck. Too bad :(

Alright, I'll change my statement.
The AUSTRALIAN VHS has the scene.
I guess it was kinda foolish to assume all the PAL releases would be the same.
I really can't understand why we have it, and not the US or UK, though... bizarre.

there are 2 other deleted scenes in the first mk movie.
one of them is that after shang tsung takes art's soul, the chosen warriors bury him under the statue of the original kung lao.
Another scene is that jade was supposed be in a fight against sonya. (but I think that this scene never made it.)

Hi Mick.
Thanks for the new info. I don't know why Australia is lucky like that while the US and UK are not. But you gave me something new to aim for now. Will definitely try to get my hands on a copy from that country, then.

Yeah, that's really weird... I absolutely cannot explain that.
Still, I guess MK has been weird like that. Wasn't the UK the only region for a while to have Conquest on DVD?
And I don't know about other regions, but we don't have the first film on DVD yet. Even though we have Annihilation.
It's nuts.

Hi Mick.
Weird is right, as I had thought that scene was lost for good until you mentioned the Australian tape. And it's nice to have a new goal now :)
But don't worry about not having the MK movie on DVD. Over here, we have it, but it has nothing special to it. The only extras are the "bios" of the kombatants, which are a cheap screen where the character's picture is seen from the movie along with their storyline from the MK1 video game. Very, very poor showing on Threshold's part.
So if you have the tape, that's all there is to the first, great MK movie.

it seems that you aussies are just damn lucky. Unfortunatly i was far too young to see both films at the cinema back in the day, despite owning both on both VHS and DVD, i've never seen any additional scenes.
The ones on MK sound great, but my real interest is with annillation. I heard rumors of a Sheeva vs Rayden fight when rayden fights the reptiles. If you watch annilhation he only kills two of the reptiles, and you never see sheeva fight :(, i thought it had been cut due to budget issues.
As for the first film it makes no sense to cut scens that were in the cinema release for the vhs and dvd release. do they save money or something?
I'm surprised theres no dvd release over there, but i expect with conquest selling well it won't be long.

I was just watching Resident Evil: Apocalypse with the Paul Anderson commentary, and he mentioned a few things regarding the first MK while discussing what he'd learned about adapting video games.
There was some mention of re-shoots to eliminate Scorpion and Sub-Zero being allies. Probably nothing major, but it'd be interesting to see how the scenes differed.
Sounds like there's definitely room for extras.
Not the most lively commentary, but I wouldn't mind hearing an Anderson retrospective on directing and adapting the first Mortal Kombat movie, which really seemed to set the tone for the live-action MK that followed.
