January 12, 2006 - New Line Cinema starts production today on The Butterfly Effect 2, the sequel to the 2004 time travel flick which starred Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart. The sequel, which centers around two new characters, will star Smallville's Erica Durance and Eric Lively from The L Word. Dustin Milligan (In the Land of Women) also stars.


Today's Variety reports that, as in the original film, the sequel's story will follow a time-traveling character who discovers that changes to past events carry unforeseen consequences in the present.

John Leonetti (Mortal Kombat: Annihilation) is directing from a screenplay by Michael Weiss (I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer).

Variety also reports that SCI FI has a Butterfly Effect series in the works. The show, which will have the same time traveling premise as the films, is tentatively set for a 2007
