There was a cartoon called 'The Journey Begins' that was made around the same time as the first movie. It had Sonya, Johnny and Liu travelling to Shang Tsung's island, being told all about the tournament by Raiden, then finished with a mass fight with a load of nomads.
Its not very good, lol.
