My ideas for a successful movie run

Ok, let me start by saying, MK1 rocked, MKA sucked. Nobody outside the MK fandom is going to take the next MK movie seriously. It's a box office bust already, and hasn't even been writen yet. So, here are some things the producers should think about before ruining another movie.

1. Video games to movies rarely work. The two best VG-M imo are MK and Resident Evil (both directed by John Anderson, hmmm?). Some people liked Tomb Raider, that never really was my thing, and Final Fantasy, which had nothing to do with the games. So I think, they would do much better putting the movie out directly to video release.

Think about it. How many companies put out movies that go directly to video? There must be some money to be made by direct to video release. I've always liked these companies like Full Moon Entertainment and the like. Good movies on a moderate budget. You don't need millions upon millions of dollars to make a great flick. And think about it from a psycologial stand point. If it's starts in the movie theaters, most people won't even give it a chance. BUT, if the casual video renter is walking the isles, sees a NEW MK movie, if they had any interest that they might have lost years ago in the game, they're going to think, when did this come out, and be temped to rented it out of curiousty.

2. Minimal advertising. That might seem stupid, but think. Alot of movie's budget goes to advertising. Things that are overly hyped (Matrix: Reloaded) are usually disappionting. Again, with the casual video renter, let this thing blindside them. Then, if they rent it and like it, they'll tell their friend, and we all know about word of mouth. Plus don't give anything away in the advertising. Less is sometimes more. Leave some things a mystery. Let people be surprised when they see this movie.

3. Use unknown actors. You don't need Mel Gibson to play Shinnok, Sharone Stone to play Sonya, and Bruce Lee's clone to play Shang. Liu was played by and unknown, and everybody loves him in that role. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, The Terminator, were all played by unknowns. It saves money and gives the characters a "fresh" look.

4. Make this an Action/Martial Arts movie. Use some special effects, but only as needed. Focus on the Martial Arts, choriography, and fight scenes. That's what MK is. AND NO GOD DAMNED WIRE FU. I can't stress that enough. What's more impressive? Sub-Zero doing a running backflip off a wall, or Charlies Angels obviously hand from wires? I hate that shit, and with the new Matrix trend of everybody hanging from the ceiling, I'd cry if they did that.

5. Don't be afraid to make this rated R. Not necessarly over the top, but it is Mortal Kombat. Most of us old school fans are over 18. Then, cut shit out to make it PG13 and put out both versions. If you're unlucky enough to parents that actually look at ratings, I'm sure they'll find the right version for you.

6. Don't over hype the movie. I hope they don't shoot themselves in the foot trying to make this mainstream. Nothing cool comes out of mainstream. Business people try to capitalize on things by makeing it mainstream, and it ends up sucking. Things need to grow popular on it's own.

7. Hire writers that actually know/care about the story. It seemed like MKA, the writers used what they felt like using. Maybe even hire/recruit some of us actual fans in the writing process. Give them pointers on what works and what doesn't. Maybe hold a contest here on MK5.org, hint, hint.

Now, back to MKA sucking. I say we ditch it. Pretend it never happend. I say make the next MK movie about MK2. Characters and story. MK2 is probably the darkest MK to date, perfect for SciFi, Fantasy, Horror fans, the target audience for MK. This will help in two ways. So they don't feel the need to capitalize off of MK6 by tring to cram MK4, 5, and 6 into one movie, and so the above stated casual renter who lost interest in MK long ago will recognize the characters. It will be a nostalgic trip. If it does good, they could make a MK3 movie, then MK4, 5, and then 6, maybe even 7 if we're lucky.

If you are crazy enough to read all of this, please tell me what you think.

I said minimal advertisement and minimal special effects. If they overhype, it's going to come back in their face. And special effects shouldn't carry the movie. Think of all the useless effects in MKA.

I agree with most of what you said except going direct to video. I really agree on pretending MKA never happened because that was a big disappointment and seemed like a "lets make this shit and split" type of moive script.

I STRONGLY agree with usingunknown actors. When you use big stars, or even close to big star for movies like this, it's as good as shooting yourself in the foot (om purpose). It usually does'nt work. And, it does give the characters a much fresher appearance, when noone has ever seen them before.

Now, do'nt get me wrong. I don't mean get someone off the street. I mean, they need to do thier homework and really try to find some hidden treasure--some true undiscovered, and give them thier big break.
