Should they try an Avengers-style approach to the MK films?

Crazy idea and probably damn near impossible to achieve, but, is it possible to release a series of MK-inspired films using the same formula Marvel used? I don't think MK has enough of an appeal to general moviegoers for this to be done but it's a wild idea!!

"PHASE 1"
US Special Forces (Sonya, Jax, Stryker, Kano, Kabal etc)
Sub-Zero/Scorpion
A film set in Outworld (more fantasy elements)
Mortal Kombat 1 tournament

Raiden would essentially be the Nick Fury of the series leading up to the first MK tournament film. LOTS of potential cameos too.

That is a very good idea, and I would watch them all,but MK is not Marvel, sorry. With great directors doing each different part of MK storyline and making cameos with Raiden ala Nick Fury in each of them is neat, but for these movies to be decent success a good director with understanding of MK mythology and a good budget are needed, which is impossible because of popularity.

The Avengers part of these series could be MK3 stroryline with Kahn invading Earthrealm. Pretty awesome thinking about it. I wish it could happen!

MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero might work as a film since it's him and Scorpion, but general audiences probably don't give enough of a fuck about Sonya, Jax, and Kano for a whole movie about just the SF vs. the Black Dragons to do well at the box office, and not too many characters have enough backstory to fill a whole two hour movie.

Personally, I think MK would work better as a TV series anyway. A season is longer than a film and you can do episodes that focus on specific characters. Similar to what Legacy tried to do except, y'know, with a real budget and hour long episodes instead of internet shorts. Plus you have way better chance of getting to tell EVERY game. Smallville ran for ten seasons and Supernatural is set to do the same, but when's the last time you heard of a movie series that had more than 3, maybe 5 films in a row tops before rebooting?

Unlikely. MK sadly is not at the same height as DC or Marvel heroes. Besides, I think movies would not have been enough to cover all characters and all events in the MK games. Some events would have been compressed or cut.

TV series with live actors or in CGI would have been much better. Each season could've covered one game + include special feature to cover some events prior to the main events and life of the heroes before they joined the fry.

I also think MK would work better as a TV series, better chance for character development.

I agree that MK works far better as a TV series due to the extensive backstory and excessive characters.

It's also iffy at the same time because DotR and Conquest both left a sour taste in my mouth.

No, god no. The characters don't have enough of a following on their own to warrant separate movies. I know I wouldn't go see a special forces movie just like certain people wouldn't see a Scorpion and Sub-Zero movie. And if the entire fanbase plus a few tens of thousands of other people don't get behind then, one failure could throw the whole thing off.

I'm just waiting for DC to start publishing MK comics, honestly.

Right? I definitely thought that it'd have happened by now.

Obviously the New/Nu 52 takes precedent.

Same here, but in no time everyone not named Scorpion or Sub-Zero would get shoved to the side so that their soap opera can get played out for the 5,823rd time.

The thing with media that most people I don't think understand is that it cost money to do it. Lets say someone funded a new movie or a series of movies or even a TV Show. The chances of it turning into what we want and not what the masses wants are super slim. To really define what "WE" want to begin with is hard enough. I can count on my hand a number of people who want the comic series to continue, I can also count on people who want it to be rebooted, another group will say to make it take place before the video games, another after the video games, another to say it should have nothing to do with the games, and another to say it HAS to do with the video games..

The way this community it built it would be possible to do it...but pleasing everyone isn't going to happen at all.. Hell I can think of at least 5 fan comic book series for this series right now...plus 3 or 4 youtube attempts at a series, thousands of suggestions for the movie, hell this place is littered with points of view..

I personally welcome any creative idea you or anyone on this forum comes up with..because it shows love for the series...

Yet on a personal note... I think it would be pretty cool if Neathrrealm would come out with a movie similar to what capcom did with resident evil and the CGI films... but again... not everyone is going to agree on that..
