As for Shang, haven't several characters in the MK game storylines died and come back? Besides, it's not like the movie stories are particularly airtight or sacred. They can just pull some bullshit like "Quan Chi can resurrect dudes" or "Shang's soul was trapped within some kind of gem and blah blah blah, you know the rest". MK tends to ignore the rules of death; it won't be hard to bring the Shangster back.

Why even continue the trend? Mortal Kombat 3 can be a comedy that deals with Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's fun and zany alliance to resurrect a dead army that will probably fall to pieces if moved. Johnny Cage can come back when Shang Tsung accidently transfers Cage's soul to one of the dead soldiers. Now Cage must choose between fullfilling the goals of his masters or turning against them and giving Sonya a bone of his own.
