What would you change to make the first movie better?

I think at least the majority of MK fans would agree that the first movie was pretty good, and that just about everyone agrees that the second movie just simply doesn't exist (on account of it being one of the worst movies of all time).

So I've been studying the MK canon storyline and been thinking about how the movie would have played out if I were calling the shots. I'm also wondering what you all think would have made the first movie better, or how a movie made today would play out. I'd also like to point out that while Legacy is entertaining, in it's own right, I'm not particularly a fan of how far it deviates from the original canon.

So here is a short list of what would make the movie (based on the first game/tournament like the '95 movie) better in my eyes:

1. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are not just henchmen of Shang Tsung. Scorpion is neutral and the audience should be given insight as to why he is in the tournament (to kill Bi-Han), while Sub-Zero would be recruited to participate by Shang Tsung, and in exchange the Lin Kuei will not be exterminated when Outworld and Earthrealm are merged.

2. Shang Tsung should not be recruiting the Earthrealm warriors. That never made any sense to me. Shang should be recruiting Sub-Zero and Kano, while Raiden should be the one paying Sonya and Johnny Cage visits and convincing them to come to the tournament. Liu Kang has been training for this his whole life so he shouldn't need any convincing.

3. All of the bad guys need to have a chance to show that they are badasses. Kano never did anything to convince me that he was dangerous, despite how well his character was played by Trevor Goddard. Sub-Zero was given a bit of the chance with his demonstration on the random henchman. They did this fairly well with Goro, with the little montage of all the Earth fighters getting thrown to the ground as he defeated them, but for the most part, all the members of Team Outworld simply show up and lose, not indicative of the team that has won the last 9 tournaments.

4. Take out Kitana. She is with Shao Kahn, who doesn't participate in the first tournament. She serves him directly and has no real reason to be with Shang Tsung at the beginning, and it takes screen time away from the other characters who could use more developing. Save her for the sequel.

5. Work in the back story of the Special Forces vs Black Dragon and show Sonya's partner getting killed during the raid in which he acted as their informant. This is one aspect of Legacy I did like, as far as meshing well with the canon.

6. More Jax. He should find himself stuck in this tournament along with Sonya. I have my ideas about the specifics, but basically they would follow Kano, who escapes the initial raid I mentioned in #5, and lead an entire SF team to the island, most (or all) of whom get slaughtered pretty quickly, giving Blade and Briggs even more of a score to settle. Also, Jax should lose his arms, though I'm not sure how. I'd say it would have to be something other than an opposing fighter removing them in a fight, because that would leave him vulnerable to Shang Tsung's soul stealing antics. It would have to be something like a cave-in, where he sacrifices himself to save others. I also like the idea of him getting his arms replaced with the same technology that Kano gets his eye replaced (which is the same tech adopted by Cyrax/Sektor/Smoke and other Lin Kuei).

7. Johnny Cage should be less whiny and more cocky like the MK9 Johnny Cage (I consider him probably the best written and voice-acted character in the game). I also wasn't too fond of Liu Kang's trolling every time Cage made a comment in the movie, but that's not a huge issue really.

8. In the Shang Tsung fight, he should actually morph into at least one of the other fighters, instead of raising them as separate fighters. The effect they used to have him morph into Chan to try to trick Liu Kang was seamless, and obviously could be implemented today mid fight, making him very formidable, as he should be.

8. Finally, here is a rough outline of which fights should definitely occur as far as the tournament goes (with more in between as time would permit):

-Scorpion vs Sub-Zero (Scorpion should win it with a classic fatality)
-Sonya vs Kano
-Johnny Cage vs Two fighters (Reptile maybe and someone else? a 1v2 to reflect the fights you had to win before fighting Goro in MK1)
Liu Kang vs Goro
Liu Kang vs Shang Tsung
Jax - Not too sure as the supply of Outworld's main cast is limited.

I think maybe it's worth considering. If Shang Tsung enlists Sub-Zero to fight for him against Earthrealm, that the other Lin Kuei would join him as well. One of my favorite parts of MK9 was human Cyrax having his internal struggle with the Grandmaster's plan and what he thought was right. We could have human Cyrax, Sektor, and Smoke to create a sufficient supply of fodder for the protagonists, but they wouldn't have time to be developed individually.

Anyway, my post grew long quickly. I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts are on this!

So the first movie was pretty good, but it'd be better if every aspect of it was drastically changed? I can't get on board with that. I also can't get on board with claims of MKA being one of the worst films ever. MKA is a gem and is easily the creative high point of the entire franchise.

I thought the first movie was decent, really decent. I wouldn't change anything except make Scorpion's spear an actual spear instead of a crappy 90s cgi.

I agree, the first movie was good.

It's the second one that needs Jesus.

I would make it more like the second one...

The second movie is better, and here's why:

The first one is okay. It's a decent movie.... But it's boring as shit. It is one of the most dull movies I've ever watched. The second one, however, is completely fuckin' ridiculous. It is SO thoroughly entertaining because of how terrible and hilarious it is. I mean... Remember the scene where Kitana finds out Sindel is alive?

Kitana: Mother! You're alive!

Sindel: Too bad YOU!!! ............ Will die!

Sindel really gets a special mention. She is the largest ham in the whole movie and she loves the word "you". In another scene she's like "Oh, but it is! And YOU!!! ......... Are powerless!" Sindel is seriously the best thing about this movie... I don't mean that she's bad though, 'cause honestly with all the terribly, stiff, hilarious acting in this movie, Sindel is actually good. Not good acting in the traditional sense, but I feel like the actress knew how ridiculous the movie was and fully embraced the intense cheesiness of her character.

I laugh out loud when Mileena and Sonya fight and Mileena's all "Aieeeeeeeeeee!" then Sonya kicks her in the face and BAM! Dead. Death by a kick in the face. Glorious. Or just Baraka... I mean damn... That face is hilarious... And Sheeva gettin' squished like a spider, Motaro lookin' like a gross 70's porn star centaur, and Jade... Just Jade. Oh my god Jade, hahaha....

Liu Kang: How could you do this to us?

Jade: It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy!

It is a fantastic movie, hehehehehehe.... Though maybe I wouldn't change the first one at all, 'cause if the first one wasn't so boring, it wouldn't have been successful and the second one would have never existed.

I never understood why MKA gets treated as if it was an Uwe Boll adaptation. It's not as bad as everyone says and not as unwatchable. Also the whole "Too bad YOU.........will die!" line isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be (It's not even an long time before she says "will die" confused) but I digress.

I would like the first movie to be an little less boring, It was always lacking something to me the way MK1 and MK:DA did and I'd changed Sonya to being more likable rather than the total bitch they made her out to be, which is why I liked Sandra Hess more than Bridgette Wilson as Sonya. She portrayed Sonya more closer to the games version.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero were Shang's flunkies in the movie simply because it would've been a major headache having their backstory along with the main plot in there at the same time, not to mention it would've flown over the heads of non-gaming viewers, who the filmmakers were catering to in addition to players. I had no problem whatsoever with it.

It's one reason why the GI Joe movies have sucked ass so far, because we had to endure the same old Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow bullshit constantly interrupting the narrative.

Scorpion/Sub-Zero is the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow of the franchise and that's not a compliment.

Too bad Sonya didn't interact much with Liu Kang.

If she did, she would encourage Liu with his involvement with Kitana plus Liu fighting Goro & Shang Tsung. Sonya would be like a big sister to Liu Kang.

I must admit, I agree.

Even in the games, it probably would've been better if Liu Kang and Sonya interacted more. She probably really would have been like a big sister to him.

True that.

Plus Scorpion & Sub-Zero working together with Shang Tsung? Bad idea.

C'mon! At least Sub-Zero is working Shang Tsung since the Lin Kuei made a deal with him. They could've mentioned that and Sub-Zero would've spoke.

What if in the fight between Liu & Sub-Zero, they could talk of their purposes in the tournament. And at the end of their fight, in Sub-Zero last words.

Sub-Zero: I... may be gone now, monk. But know this.... at least... my brother will take my place and... not end up the same fate as I have. At least Scorpion didn't have the chance to kill me.

Shang Tsung hiring the Lin Kuei wasn't part of the games' story until the reboot.

Before that, Sub-Zero's story was that he went to the tournament because he was hired by someone else to KILL Shang.

You're out of your mind, the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow parts have literally been the ONLY good scenes in those movies.

I actually enjoyed the fact that neither Sub-Zero nor Scorpion spoke in the first movie. Their appearances made a hell of a lot more sense than the sequel.

Their "appearing as enemies for the purpose of having our two favorites fight" appearance had no meaning, no significant purpose whatsoever. I mean, at least Shang Tsung says it out loud that they're slaves under his power. Their second appearance made no goddamn sense.

None of that film made any sense, right down to the Woody Woodpecker-esque gargoyle that ate the Serbian excuse for noted fictional exotic dancer Jade.

Of course the whole thing didn't make sense. But out of the entire movie, the Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion scene pissed me off more than any other scene.

I'm disappointed in Kano. He died by Sonya's leg grab.

If he was still around, Shang Tsung would've thought of taking his lifeless body to Outworld's prisons for the emperor to decide his fate.

And if Kahn lets Kano live, he would've been a general of Kahn's forces and allows the Black Dragon to be spared and that they fight for Outworld.

Well, I thought they sucked. You're entitled to your opinion and me, mine. Doesn't make me "out of my mind."

I've been an on-off again GI Joe fan for over a quarter century and have never liked that rivalry. It's so fucking tired and played out.

The only thing I'd change is I would make the storyline not go completely off rail after Cage beats Goro. Everything just goes crazy after that fight.

I would make some minor changes.

Make it a R rated movie by adding fatalities that are like the games, bloody and gore filled. Hell, that's what made MK so popular.

Do not make Scorpion and Sub-Zero Shang Tsung's henchmen...even though he says "deadliest of enemies, but slaves under my power". They could of went a new direction with that. Sub-Zero is working for the Lin-Kuei and Scorpion is looking for Sub-Zero and Shang tells him he can give him the Lin-Kuei ninja.

Let people know the age old question "What the hell happened to Johnny Cage when Liu Kang was fighting Reptile?" I like to say that Kitanna held him back by telling him Liu Kang could defeat the lizard statue guy.

In the end battle Shang should change into one or two of the characters who died earlier in the movie or better yet, Kung Lao's ancestor.

I agree with a few of the things others said too...Scorpion should have a spear and not a demon, and also that Kitana does not need to be in the first movie.

The Scorpion/Sub change was done for a reason, not just because the screenwriter wanted to randomly fuck with the storyline. Wish people would understand that.

Riyakou Wrote:

LOOOOL!!!

On Topic; what I would change:

1. Cast people who have actual martial arts experience AND can believably act

2. Better fight scenes. If you pay attention to the fighting, you can see how the attacked anticipates or even WAITS for the attacker before reacting. This is ridiculously obvious when Liu Kang is kicking the black guy in his back when Shang Tsung resurrects fallen warriors at the end. It also makes no sense how in the beginning the bad guys stomp the hell out of the good guys and then the good guys just BAM win the fight at the last minute. Make the shit believable!

3. Redo reptile so he's not human only when thrown into a random statue that's laying around and waiting for something to be thrown into it.

4. Get a real Raiden. I am not impressed with ANY of the Raiden actors in the movies, television show, or web series. They all just suck. I like MK2's Raiden who looked asian and just bad ass in his face. Look at the MK2 arcade cabinet to get wtf I mean. I don't care if the actor who played Raiden in the game was Caucasian, I can promise you that was not Tobais' intention when the whole fucking original game was Asian themed.

5. Better action that makes sense. Shang Tsung and Kano are trying to get Sonya onto the Island (alive) so why the hell, in the beggining, does that one guy open fire with an automatic at her (missing like a clumsy fool) in the middle of a club (with innocent people behind her possible all getting hit)? You'd think they'd try to detain her using martial arts, not trying to turn her body into Swiss cheese with a gun.

6. Flawless Victory. I'd like the next Liu Kang and Shang Tsung (the whole cast for that matter) to actually know the fucking meaning of this term.

7. Do not cluster fuck the already confusing MK story line. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are not buddy buddy and hangin' out with there main-man Shang Tsung. NO. Sub-Zero is there to rip Tsung's spine out and Scorpion is there to turn Sub-Zero in to french toast. The same goes for all the other stupid changes to characters' backstory and purpose of being on the island.

8. Fatalities. I'd like better fatalities. Real fatalities. The one full fight we see from Goro (vs Art Lean - what a stupid fucking character by the way) was a big let down. You'd expect some awesome finisher from Goro but what does he do? He hits him in the face with a fist and that's the end. I expected limb ripping or something cool from GORO!!

Johnny Cage just happens to find a shield to cover his entire body from Scorpion's flame (funny how the metal doesnt get hot and burns Cage) and conveniently finds a spear in a pile of bones. Then Scorpion just stands there and watches (he just lets him) Cage slice him apart with the shield. How pathetic.

Raiden and Kitana conspire against Sub-Zero and just conveniently know to leave a bucket of water for Kang JUST IN CASE he casts an ice sphere. Then of course Sub-Zero stares as the water is being spun by Liu Kang not having any clue what he's about to do with it.

Johnny vs Goro... the beginning was hilarious... then Cage runs around the mountain (did he have a map to know the layout or something) and finds some stupid ledge to hide. Goro's nuts must be hurting so bad he becomes a blind and brainless moron. Then the camera zooms out so far that we see two poorly rendered CGI figures fighting in the distance. Finally, Goro is knocked off the ledge like a PUSSY. That is NOT how you treat an important figure like Goro. This entire movie took a big shit on Goro.

Ah yes, and what was Cage doing while Liu kang was getting his ass handed to him by Reptile? Making out with Kitana?

I need to just stop right there. The more I write this, the more I realize just how shitty the first movie really was. I suppose I like it because its between that and MKA, and comparing it to MKA makes the first movie gold.
