Why was Scorpion and Sub-Zeros story taken out of the first movie?
If I could fault the movie on one thing is that they removed the storyline of the two most popular characters: Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Whatever happened to Scorpion wanting to get revenge on Sub-Zero for killing him? Instead in the movie, both Scorpion and Sub-Zero are just mindless minions of Shang Tsung.

Tsung had a spell on them both ... they was under hes power .. not by choice, id do the the same if i was him ..cos i would want those to guys on my side rather than against me.
So its not realy a fault .. the story of it worked pretty well i thought
Yeah I know that, but still.., it's kinda unfair that Johnny Cage and Liu Kang just killed them if they were under a spell. (Although Scorpion probably wouldn't stay dead)

well scorpion didnt stay dead .. because mortal kombat annihilation was set straight after the tourniment basicly straight away from the first film ... scorpion was in it again... and the sub-zero was the first subs brother

The Scorpion/Sub-Zero thing was taken away so they could simplify the plot. They made the plot is basically "Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade vs. evil" as oposed to the games' storyline which involves numerous sub-plots and such.

It wasn't just Scorpion and Sub-Zero. In the games, Kano wanted to the loot the island for himself, but they made him just serving Shang Tsung with the other bad guys. Also note they eliminated the whole "if Sonya loses her team gets slaughtered" sub-plot, too.

They simplified everything because it would've taken too long to explain everyone's personal goals and stories properly.

Now, remember, in the second movie, Scorpion & Sub-Zero (the 2nd) did end up fighting eachother. Now remember, game wise, in Mortal Kombat II, Scorpion didn't know that the Sub-Zero he was hunting was not the same one he persued in the first game. He didn't know that it was his younger brother until AFTER the tournament was over. Now, are they going to have that same particular story line for the third movie? Probably not, considering them guys at Threshold really fucked up a wet dream with Mortal Kombat Annihilation.
^Don't worry, they're considering the second movie non-canon so as far as we know in the third movie, Scorpion could be free from Shang Tsung's mind control, but probably not Sub-Zero (he's dead after all)

The games and movies are actually different storylines though.

As the same with Conquest.

The movie is based on the games.

It's always like that on movies based on a game/comic book, etc..

They don't always go by the same storylines presented on it's parent. They keep the basic building block while at the same time presenting a new story altogether in a way.

***SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIES (jus tin case)***

My biggest personal dissapointment concerning MK1 was the way the fight between Liu Kang and Sub-Zero went. It just felt...bad. It could have been done better. "Use the element which brings life." Sigh.. Scorpion vs Cage was awsome though!

And for Annihaltion, I was greatly displeased how Sub-Zero and Scorpion only lasted for a fight scene more or less. At near the end they could have placed Scorpion with Ermac, Sindel, Motaro and Shao Khan, whereas, Sub-Zero would have actually joined Liu Kang instead of disapearing once Scorpion got Kitana.

Oh well, hopefully, the third movie will give the ninja fans more depth to Scorpion and Sub-Zero and ignite their feud.
