I just played with the Beta for two hours and my impressions are the next. The gameplay is even slower than it looks on the videos. It's extremely sluggish. On top of that the "stop-motion effect" when hitting the opponent makes it even worse (really don't know what is the purpose of that). Compared to MKX the length of the combos is reduced drastically, also the variation of the combos is reduced drastically as well. On the other hand the time for punish is is extremely high. For example when you throw a spear with scorpion and it misses, the opponent has almost 3 seconds to punish you and at this time you can't block.

I don't know why they downgraded the gameplay so much but at this moment I'm considering to cancel my preorder.

Felt a bit slow in the beginning, but not anymore for me. I'm mostly playing with Kabal and played some Jade. Had some nice fights online, one time the connection was horrible even if it said it was a good connection.

Plays like MK2 with a moderate take. Personally I am enjoying it tons more than X. I hate long combo strings and 50/50.

Give it a try with an open mind and you will love it

Hm... I am really happy with the game so far. For me it shouldn't be faster. But I think some Kharacters need more option for combo strings. With Skarlet you do only one string twice and that's it. This is boring if you have only this way to pull off a combo...

The slower gameplay also allows for different type of fighters. Some are fast, some are more focused on strength and so on. So do you go for a speedy character of for one that deals more damage with less hits or are you going for someone that is more agile.
There is more difference in the characters than just there special moves.

if you paid attention to the kombat kast, they made big changes to the game speed that is NOT available in the Beta. Watch the last kombat kast with Kotal and you’ll see it in the beginning

Imagine thinking the beta is going to be the final product when they have already announced they are increasing dash speed.....calm down we live in the age of day 1 patches and balance changes

Maybe you shouldn't be throwing spears out in the neutral, Sub Zero.

Most of the things you said you don't like about the game I love. The slower pace and shorter games allows for a more neutral based game. Even though MK was my first fighting games I have played many since and the things I learned through that carry over to this game. I am pretty sure that's a good thing in terms of the FGC and the tournament scene.

Not sure how it will effect casuals though.

They all ready said they were speeding up the gameplay with dashes in the final build. They said that this fix would NOT be in the beta.

Well we are a little divided on this one. I have been playing MK a long time now and one thing that always set it apart was its speed. I also find the game way too slow and more importantly very clunky. Yes yes yes I know they are fixing it but the beta is all I have to go on atm. Also the lack of combo strings is concerning. Less options means less gameplay options. Last but not least I HATE the way the fatalities freeze like comic book action poses. There is far too much Injustice in my MK LoL. But glad some seem to like the slower pace it's just not for me so far.

Scorpion spear is brutally unsafe you say? Wow, for him being one of the two most popular characters in the franchise I keep hearing complaints about his unsafe-ness and I'm like "Is this the first time anyone has played as him? 'Cause this has literally been my life as a dedicated Scorpion fan since 1992, lol." Scorpion is unsafe and high risk on EVERYTHING he does and literally always has been. You need to be an expert at reads and mind games to be GOOD with Scorpion. He's deceptively easy to play as but requires mad skills to actually win against someone who knows how to play the game. In expert hands he's a nuclear weapon against a scrub/casual who doesn't block though, lmao.

Some guys I read are saying it is slow in a way reminiscent of Mortal Kombat 2 . If this is true, I think I am going to like this game. I'm getting the Switch version so I must wait for April 23.

Also I agree about the post-fatality animations, I don't really care for the freeze-frame thing.

But yeah if it's like MK2 I'm going to be at home. MKX was fast and combo heavy, I'm ready for a change of pace.As long as there is variety and strategy to the fighting moves and dynamics, I'm good. That's what MK is all about, strategy. I always liked MK's fighting dynamics, never understood people who prefer say, Street Fighter for example.

Well, they're not going to speed up the whole game, which I have the impression some think they will. They have sped up dashes and such, but if I heard right, they won't speed things up for everybody.

I'm liking this gameplay, since it doesn't solely rest on combo-heavy combination. I like it that my special moves count again and where I stand.
I had someone pulling the "standard scorpion combo" on me. He won the first match, but after that it was my turn and I was able to counter his combo's and react appropriatly. I think it is a lot nicer to use a combo of placement, special moves and smaller combo's.
It really feels like a modern day MK1 and 2 and I like it. I found the fights to be more interesting and not a "who can pull the combo first, rinse and repeat".

I think MK9 had the best pace. I havent touched the game jet. But i really hope the game feels mobile. From what i have seen sofar, it kinda looks its not. Unfortunatly i have to agree that mk11 kinda lacks creativity in the combo department.

Fast or slow is not the issue for me, aslong the game doesnt feel stiff, like i cant move, im ok. Mkx had a run button but besides that it felt hella stiff compared to MK9.

Once NRS fixes the dashes and recovery on the movement i think it will end up playing alot better. But than agian, NRS said they tweak the movement per character, not in general.

Just adding my beta experience.

I've only played the tower ai. Similar problems as MKX with the opponent reading your inputs and performing the perfect reply, although it's not as acute as before, probably due to the gameplay being more relaxed. This is a welcome move as the frenetic games of X became a blur at times. Seemingly endless juggles were unrealistic too(I know, it's MK!) so the slow down here is also preferable.

I've enjoyed all 5 characters, even Scorpion, so that alone is an improvement.

The fatalities just bore me now. Old MK2/3 ones seemed more fun somehow. Brutalities are good though.

Playing the ai can get annoying with its second-guessing so I'll probably go online come release day.

Much better than X.

^ This. Only use for spear is 1. to amplify it IF you want to do the 212 KB after it OR 2. As Ketchup/Mustard pointed out you can do much less damage but have an unbreakable combo if you keep them grounded. I mostly use Teleport for the very reasons you cited though. The stuff we've been experimenting with over on TYM forum is game changingly sweet if you are a Scorpion fan! It is kinda sad that his trademark Spear has been so completely phased out as an important Scorpion tool though.

Theres defiently a learing curve to this game. And yes its slower. But I find myself playing more strategic and really learing distance timing etc. more than ever before. I also feel like (I don't know if its just me) i'm feeling the impact of the hits a lot more if that makes any sense.
