Nevermind that part where he killed the guy who used to be his boss with poison and subterfuge because he feared him!

Pft. One true ruler...

Kotal actually held his own very well in that small clash. Shao only managed to get two hits in on him and collapse a rock on top of Kotal but we know he survives that thanks to the story trailer. I'm thinking Kotal will win if they have a rematch and I'd be fine with that honestly.

And apparently Kotal was Shao's general, but Shao had him locked away in the Flesh Pits and experimented on.... because he feared him.

Conquering other realms might be a sign he's compensating for something :D

I'm seeing a lot of Kotal haters here. I just have to say I love Kotal Kahn! Shao Kahn may be good at konqust but other than that, he's just another bore. At least Kotal is working toward being a worthy Kahn for Outworld. I've been a Mortal Kombat fan for a long time and I personally haven't liked many of the fighters over the years but Kotal is one who has been a welcome addition to me.

Indeed. Although I've always liked Shao Kahn as a ruthless end boss, I'm rooting for Kotal Kahn.

My question is why is Shao Kahn even needing to put in that much effort into defeating Kotal? He's a demigod. The guy has the power to merge realms and rips peoples souls from their bodies. Gameplay being excused here shouldn't he be able to body Kotal in a matter of minutes without having to wave his battle hammer around?

Eh, whatever, Liu Kang managed to do it some how so I'll cut blue boy a break. I guess I'm just worried they're going all Disney Star Wars on us by embarrassing the old and polishing the new.

Also I thought Kotal was loyal to old skull face when he was alive? Oh wait didn't they just recently pull a retcon where he was enslaved by Shao? Guess that throws that out the window but why even-

You know what I'll just wait to see how this story plays out before I start asking why.

My explaination (albeit lame) is this: While Kotal's powers pale in comparison to Shao's, he is a (the?) Sun God. He is a resourceful if flawed fighter (I can't get the image of him on his knees being spared by Kung Jin on his own soil. He lost... to KUNG JIN!).

While Shao is one of the strongest beings in the MK universe, his flaws are mental. He's a cocky son of a bitch. Remember him laughing his ass off at challengers during MK2? That's his problem, he's the type of dude to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Last question I don't know.

Agreed. Shao Kahn is a bore and his vacuous one-dimensional personality grates after a short while. He also reduces most if not all the rest of the Outworld characters as they have to serve him or die. I am pretty sure Kotal will still be Outworld Emperor at the conclusion of the story.

I can concede that Shao Kahns' ego is his downfall and probably why he ever bothered to take anyone on in hand to hand combat when he could easily dispatch them with his power. Hence why he ended up losing it all to Liu Kang.

@xysion
That will always be one of the many things I will hold against MK9. They could have finally elaborated on Shao Kahn a bit more, his relationship with Kitana ect. Instead he's just evil for the sake of it. And they made him a dumb ass on top of that.

Even before his portrayal came to the silver screen what I and a few others who were here at the time were looking for was basically for him to be portrayed like Thanos. Only more sadistic and insane but understandable to an extent. At least humanized a little.

Same for Shinnok but writing is hard for modern NRS. Actually this seems to be a problem for the vast majority of entertainment these days. Villains have to be irredeemably evil with no nuance otherwise they and others speculate you are advocating for the villain. Why do you think they gave Scorpion that brainwashed revenant loop hole to make him unaccountable for his selfish morally grey actions as a specter, uh I mean revenant...whatever.

This ^ Actually I hate Marvel movies and Thanos is not a good villain - more like a teenager with too much power. What I want from the writers is to make Shao a bit like Kain from Legacy of Kain. Strong, wise, very old and scheming sob. I got a glimpse of that in MK:Conquest series but the writing was only so-so. But Shao Kahn was pretty good in it - a scheming and ruthless warlord who will even take a god one-on-one and then laugh in his face as he kills all his allies and takes all the spoils (that scene was priceless!).

But to make a good anti-hero or a villain story you need good writers and NRS has problems with hiring those. You can say they've biult a universe out of a mere fighting game and you'd be right but I don't see them taking advantage of it. First MK games told a more coherent story than latest installments albeit not very deep. Latest games have story mode but they don't use it at all to develop main characters. We had MK1-MK3 story retold in MK9 and it got nowhere. e.g. Liu Kang blindly followed Rayden and was killed. And what we got in MKX? Him yelling though the entire game "you killed me, I hate you!" I mean - really? And I bet in MK11 we'll get past Liu complaining to his future self for becoming evil and future Liu saying: "Rayden killed me, it's his fault!"

What I want to say is that though we have a story that spans across a few games the story isn't really progressing. Characters at the beginning of the next part are in the same place as in the previous one and that bothers me. I love Shao Kahn, I like him as a villain and I'd like him to be developed more but insted NRS threw me a bone in the shape of Kotal who got his ass kicked by a bunch of teenagers and nothing can make me forget that part. His design was interesting but so what? I need more to like a character than just a nice look.

I see Kotal more as a general to Shao Kahn than a ruler. And I want Shao Kahn to be an emperor with more character development.

My main reason for referencing Thanos was their treatment of a being like that was basically what everyone was asking for of Shao Kahn back in the day. During the development of MK9 people were pinning for NRS to flesh out Shao Kahn more. Especially the relationship between him and Kitana. To explore this element of Shao Kahn and the complexity of his relationship with his adopted daughter. They basically wanted what people got with Thanos and Gamora. Instead they got "I'm evil and never loved you and got this replacement!"

People here while imagining what NRS could do with the retelling or MK1 to 3 kept referencing his relationship with her in Conquest and that one Malibu comic where he is treating her like a daughter and Milleena realizes she will never have that relationship with Shao Kahn.

But every character was robbed of such nuance in the abridged retelling of their stories in MK9. Mileenas' a crazy evil mutant who lives for sex and blood and Shao Kahn is just evil because it tickles his taint.

Also if you think Thanos in the movies was a angst driven teen with too much power, then holy shit you should see his comic book iteration. His portrayal in the movie is downright Shakespearean by comparison.

To whoever is wondering why Shao Kahn needed so much time to defeat Kotal, keep in mind two things:

1) The fight took place in a rather sunny dsy

2) Shao had kotal imprisoned because he feared him.

Also, Kotal had a chapter in story mode.

Also, this isn't Dragon Ball Z where there are powerlevels and characters are unable to keep up with each other.

Remember that Liu Kang and Kung Lao can solo take out Shao Kahn. Yet Raiden... who's also a god in a similar vein to Shao Kahn... lost to Shao Kahn... and still struggled when he had the power of the Elder Gods.

It all comes down to who's chapter it is determines the winner. I heard MK11 is changing that format up a bit. Hopefully this is true as it undermined a lot of characters.

I think the key to improving Shao Kahn is having him as a regular player and not the final boss, like in Deception. Maybe NRS will do right by him now despite of his DLC condition, we'll see when the game comes out.
