Making events out of video game releases, am I the only one?

Every once in a while a game that means a lot to me comes out and I like to make events out of them. I can tell you what movie I was watching, the weather outside, and the general time when my brother came home with Mortal Kombat 2 on our Sega Genesis. Disney's The Great Mouse Detective, Rainy Night Time, and 6ish respectively.

My introduction to Mortal Kombat was Christmas Eve, I received a sega genesis, sonic 2 and MK1, which was my introduction to fighting games. The blood code blew my mind (abacabb) and I have fond memories trying to figure out how to fight reptile with a friend. We even went as far as changing the televisions tint to make sub-zero green.

My friend rented Mortal Kombat 3 and I went over his house right after school and played it in its pixelated glory. A few friends would play Ultimate MK constantly against each other. I'm not too humble to admit that I was the best player.

To say that Mortal Kombat is a huge part of my gaming life would be an understatement. I can't forget constantly playing the techno soundtrack over and over again as we played, I'll spare you any more uninteresting flashbacks. A great album btw. Now onto what this post is about.

When games that I really want, come out, I like to make an event out of them. Mega Man legacy, I had the game music in my car, my Mega Man shirt on and a coffee on the way back from Best Buy. Who cares about a coffee you say? The straw had a hole in it and dripped all over my shirt, that makes the day even more memorable.

When the bleach fighting game for the Nintendo DS came out me and a friend hung out at a local memorial in the freezing cold and played for a while.

I can go on and on about Mortal Kombats, those are my go to games and I have the strongest memories of them. For Mortal Kombat 11 I plan on making the week of release an MK week where I'll watch, both movies, the legacy series, cartoon, even the live action show. There is also an MK10 tourney that I have no business attending (I'm practicing) but I'm entering anyway. Winner gets MK11. I could go on about my other MK releases but I'll spare you.

So, does anyone else make events out of releases or am I the only one?

What a coincidence. I just finished watching both movies after 22 days of Mortal Kombat Conquest (1 episode each day) and before that, Legacy. Tomorrow I'm gonna watch a recap of MK story from MK1 to MKX, maybe even the whole walkthrough of MKX, read some lores of my favorite characters or just watch videos on YouTube.

All that was planned weeks ago so yes, I do this too.

This is awesome, I didn't start watching conquest or legacy 2 yet, if you had a choice which would you rather go with first? I'm also going to try and play some MKX Story. Thanks for the post!

It's not too often these days it's an event for me but MK11 feels like an event. I mean I pre-ordered a brand new game and I can't even tell you the last time that happened. Even games I'm normally excited for I don't buy until they've been out a few weeks/months. I have been playing the Genesis version of MKII on emulator quite a bit the past couple of weeks in anticipation because MK11's gameplay has been reminding me of it.

As for when I first discovered MK it was 1994 for me. My older brother who was a teenager at the time (I was only six) had borrowed a Sega Genesis from a friend and we had it at our house for several weeks. One of the games was MKII and I just absolutely fell in love with it, I was obsessed. I got my own Genesis for Christmas later that year and MK1 with it while I continued renting MKII until I got my own copy. And then the anticipation I had for the Mortal Kombat movie was just unreal. I don't think I have EVER been that excited for a movie since then (hard to match a 7 year old's excitement levels). I had that MK: The Journey Begins cartoon on video with a little mini documentary about the making of the upcoming movie and I watched it obsessively.

HaHa! I was probably 10 - 12 when I first received MK1 and a genesis for Christmas. My uncle was a big martial arts fan so that's probably why he got it for me. To be honest, I think when I first played it I thought it was just ok and then news came of a blood code and it blew my mind.

I too had the Journey Begins and would watch that like nothing else. I watched MK the movie twice in a week and they were 2 very different experiences, with the first being a normal movie and the second time having the movie theater crowd clap and scream with different fight scenes, that's a feeling I'll never forget.

The door to my bedroom (dubbed the wall of kombat) had previews of MK2 ripped out of magazines and taped on to the door and some trading cards, and a license plate I made in school. This game holds a special place for me.

I wasn't rich so when I found out Mortal Kombat 3 was coming I decided I had to somehow get 50 cents a day for me to be able to save enough in time for the release date. I actually did it too, I even made a plan (self imposing) that I would only do one or two fatalities per character a week so that I wouldn't burn out on it. Of course game informer came out with all the moves and fatalities and that plan didn't work.Oh nostalgia! Great times.

Every Mortal Kombat game feels like an "event" for me. It's not like we get these games yearly- so any time a new MK releases it's always feels special to me.

I will admit, MKX didn't feel that special to me. But every other release in the franchise have been such an exciting event for me and MK11 is another.

I don't have any big plans but just enjoying the game enough- on release day- is celebration enough.
