I'm disappointed beyond words...

When MKX came out, it just blow my mind how great the fighting mechanics were, how fast it was and how professional. And with the patches through months I can say without a doubt that MKXL became the best fighting game of all times.

Now, I waited 4 years and hoped when the day of the next MK arrives, that I will be blown away even more and that Netherealm can actually push the bar even further. This day finally came and after seeing the direct gameplay between pro players like Scar, Sonicfox etc. I realized that Netherealm scrapped the glorious MKXL fighting mechanics and instead they created an slow paced Injustice 3 in a MK coat. MK characters, blood and gore, but that's it. The game is a slow, noobish Injustice clone where there is no running, no fast combos, cancels etc. Camera is way too far away and characters are way too small compared to MKXL. Just a lame zoning mechanics which was the main cause why Injustice 2 online play died very soon.

And before someone tells me that this is a beta. Well, there are only 3 months left and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to find out that there will be no major changes in the game, especially not in the core mechanics like the fighting-engine.

I knew a thread like this was coming. Sigh.

It's not all about zoning. I watched the professional player matches and it made it clear that it's about the way you hold your ground rather than combos and juggling. So not just zoning necessarily but also footsies and pressuring. They made it clear you can choose to play offensively or defensively, and even play differently with the same character depending on variation or gear. I'm not sure what about mechanics that are more about positioning than executing combos is "noobish". That makes it more about the strategy of being aware of where you are instead of the ability to execute combos. It's just different not more "noobish".

Zoning, grappling? No, no, no. Those are a fluffy superhero style mechanics for Injustice and alike.
MK is about combos, juggles, cancels, fifty-fifty, etc. Fast, rapid, running.

This game is extremely slow, lumpish and unprofessional compared to MKXL. MK11 should be a step forward, but instead it's a step back. Now we have to wait another 4 years for them to fix the mistakes of MK11 in a possible MK12...

I'm a hardcore MK fan since 1992 when I first played it in the arcades. And till then I bought every single MK game on multiple consoles and on PC. I couldn't believe that the day will come when I will not buy an MK episode, but it seems that MK11 will be skipped from my collection, especially with my experience in Injustice 2 (which I sold after one month).

The game looked absolutely superb in every way. There was something for every kind of play style in this demonstration. Zoning, sure. Also grappling, pressure, footsies. There are seemingly different ways to play every character.

Also...this is quite literally day -100. This was a 2 hour meta. There is no way you saw everything this game’s meta is going to have to offer.

very excited to get my hands on the beta in March.

Ahhhh. There it is. Sweet, delicious salt every time a new MK is released. Never fails.

There is quite clearly a lot more to the game than just zoning, the gameplay looks far from slow AND you haven't even played it yet.

Take it from someone who played it at the London event - it's not as slow as you think. Try giving it a play before judging it.

i like what i saw but the only disappointment i have is it didn't feel like a reveal event. it felt more of a tournament if anything since it shall be out in under three months

i wish we got more charachter reveals and more information about the customization.

Nice blog post!

But no, the game looks incredible. Think about how stupid it is to say that a game from the same developers from another kind of fighting game have similarities. NRS keeps growing with each game they develop, they learn from each installment. MK9 was the base, they then learned from there how to make a proper fun DC game. So MK11 taking EVERYTHING from their passed 4 games shouldn't be a surprise. Look at all the other MKs! Every single MK game has changed. Why do you want people to spoonfeed you basic thoughts you should think of yourself? I hate dumbbells, i've never liked a dumbbell.

Well you can't hate this man for being disappointed, but I can say that i'm not disappointed at the changes I've seen so far at all. Mortal Kombat tends to make some pretty substantial changes from game to game, and I think that is a good thing. I hate when companies put out the same game every year or so. So needless to say, if you think MKX is the best fighting game out there, you're destined to be disappointed by the sheer fact that this game is not just another MKX.

As for the game being basic or noobish, I can't say for sure since I've only seen a couple of matches played. Even the pros can't be completely seasoned this early on. It does seem like they are adding a lot of little details that can really help a good player shine; short hops, flawless blocks, an offensive and defensive meter are all things the typical newbie will happily ignore, but could define the game for a devoted player. Not to mention customizable variations will really benefit those who take the time to study all the moves. They could then create a variation for a large variety of scenarios.

If you do think MKX is the best game, then good thing is you can still play MKX; it isn't going anywhere.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the footsies gameplay of MKX, and seeing it return doesn't excite me. Also, I find that the Injustice 2/MK11 face are really butt-ugly. Whenever someone grits their teeth in the slightest, it makes them look constipated. I feel that Raiden, Sonya, and Geras have it the worst. Also, the gear system just comes off as lame. If I wanted to customize Scorpion, I would play Armageddon. And some of the gears look terrible. I will also point out, that some praise the new graphics. While some areas look fantastic, the fatalities look worse than ever. I mean, there's no sense of subtlety, And they refuse to not incorporate the brain or face into every fatality, much like MKX and the meat-head. Also, the UI and HUD makes it not even look like Mortal Kombat.

There is no definitive Mortal Kombat style. Zoning and walking for movement were the defining traits of MK1 and MK2. Jax and Mileena was top tier in MK2 because they could zone out the entire cast pretty effectively. Then MK3 brought in run and introduced dial-a-combos from KI, a lot of MK2 fans didn't like the run and auto-combos, and argued it stifled playstye diversity and rewarded memorization of strings than strategy, so they chose to stay with MK2 instead. Constant 50/50s and vortexes didn't even become a thing in the MK series until deception, and then only came back with MKX. Point is, there is no set type of MK gameplay, thus, MK11 is just as much of a MK game as MKX.

I think you just need to watch better matches, with people who actually had more time with the game. It looks amazing. Check this out:

My only request is for the devs to increase the walking/dashing speed and to fix the ''weight'' of the characters, meaning the jumping feels a bit too heavy and the arches don't seem right. Think ala SF2 to SF2 TURBO.

Other than that the game looks absolutely amazing in every way!

Whoa, I didn't know they were already up to Injustice 10. No wonder it takes so long to get a new MK game!
