I doubt Kahn would become a full on hero, but a bit more depth to the character wouldn't hurt.

Turning Shao Kahn into a good guy all of a sudden just because some spell or influence was lifted... feels like one of those unnatural kinds of twists that we'd be justified to gripe about.

Raiden turned Dark partly because he was corrupted by an outside influence, and partly because he's tired of the shit. So his turn makes enough sense, even if the "corruption" angle seems a little hamhanded. Same with Liu Kang -- being a Revenant just gave him an excuse to go all-in with the darkness that was already rising inside him. As a formerly evil character, Sareena had a seed of doubt planted that grew over the course of her story, so that her eventual turn against the Netherrealm fits in with her character.

Shao Kahn has none of the elements that made these transitions work. There is no light in him: he is ruthless, brutal, with a selfish and single-minded cunning that can't plausibly be explained away with just an, "Oh, he was just under X villain's influence the entire time he's been alive." It's more appropriate to say that if something like the One Being was using him, it's because his personality traits and power made him useful. He was encouraged to do what he does in a way that serves the influencer's purpose, rather than being mind-controlled to do live his entire life in a way he normally wouldn't.

If we're gonna do this heroic turn the right way, then let's go with a plot they already had on the drawing board anyway: Shang Tsung, following the path of his MK9 ending. Instead of being a bad guy turning good for no good reason, he's the bad guy we need because our heroes have failed us and he's the only one left to turn to. And then, over the course of that story when he's forced into a situation where he has to do the responsible thing, maybe he becomes just a little bit more of an ally who might be willing to help out when called upon. Maybe he starts to develop... a soul of his own.

We can't really expect this kind of change from a character like Kahn. He might join forces against a common threat -- temporarily -- but there's no reason to believe he'd ever truly change into a benevolent protector god. At best we should anticipate an uneasy truce afterward, or more likely, he turns the situation to his advantage to beat everyone in the end.

I can totally sympathize with everyone's desire to see the series buck the status quo. But let's not be so desperate for change that we'll accept any change just to have something different.

Actually for what it's worth, I believe in some of the many side interviews conducted back on reveal day, NRS confirmed this game will be straying further away from the "every character gets 4 fights" story mode format. They suggested the characters will be mixed up more in this game than they were in the previous two, and at times we may even get a choice of which character to use (say for instance, Liu Kang or Kung Lao), which would follow because it's been suggested more than once that story mode will have multiple paths and different endings this time.

So it's still entirely possible it could start and end with Cassie (though I personally don't think it's going to, just saying it could)

Not to mention, even in MK9, Liu Kang got more than his fair share of fights just so he could beat Kahn in MKII after Kung Lao died. His chapter was also early and over with at that point. So there's existing precedent showing they're not beyond tacking on a random fight if the story demands it.

Maybe Noob if they go down the whole champion of the elder gods story arc like Scorpion after his experience with the soulnado.

But that being said I am not so sure Kronika will be made out to be the big bad like Shao or Shinnok I kind of see there being two bosses Kronika and Dark Raiden, sort of Injustice style where you could pick the ending. Choose Kronikas side and everything sort of goes back to the way it was choose Dark Raiden and the timeline stays the same! I don’t know could be wrong but I think old timeline Liu Kang Is probably realistically going to be the heroes at the end this time round.

Either way I can’t wait to see the story unfold I am wondering how it is all going to end and what is going to happen to the old timeline characters that have been brought back by Kronika, they can’t die cause technically that would kill the new timeline characters but for ones like Shao and Baraka who are already dead in the new timeline I wonder what will happen to them after it’s all said and done

I hope so. I hated the way the 4 fight chapters would outright dictate the story in previous games.

Lol. Scorpion will finally step up and be the antihero we need. He will finally be successful at something besides releasing a greater evil on all of us as a result of doing something stupid, selfish, and seemingly minor, lmao.

People are saying khan can't turn good and beat kronika at this point in time but you left out one thing! He doesnt have to do a good face turn. This could be a power trip at the end with 2 villains fighting each other and possibly seeing shao khan getting Molly whopped by her time powers at the beginning.... He finally lands that hammer throw or shoulder rush and you see kronika fall to the ground.... Then he points at her and says "you suck!" (I would mark up hardcore and get goosebumps). It would be an insane battle and a great cutscene. Or just give me a nice kotal vs shao khan fight CGI and I'm happy too. Kronika strikes me as the type to keep throwing people at you to fight instead of her doing the fighting herself. She seems like a strong mage type character too though.

Stupid question:

We know Shao Kahn appears in Story mode, despite being a DLC preorder incentive, but why are people assuming hes playable ... wouldn't he have to be playable to beat Kronika at the end? I kinda doubt they're going to include him as a playable character at all in story mode, much less end on a playable character that's not part of the default roster.

Mk9 had a great ending. It required raiden to defeat one of the strongest characters. Mkx had a great stoey but they left the fate kf the world to the kombat kids, and had cassie defeat the strongest character so far. I hope they dont repeat this mistake.

I would like to see a group effort honestly

A great ending? All he had to do was tell Liu Kang "Hey, wait until this guy steps through the portal and then kick his ass like you're supposed to." Instead he some how accidentally electrocutes Liu Kang, kills him and because of his numerous blunders has to take on the big guy himself, loses so the Elder Gods have to use him as a vessel to clean up his mess.

I don't think I can concede that that was a good ending lol.

I can see Shao Kahn turning on Kronika but not turning good. I think it would be

"I AM SHAO KAHN!!! AND I SERVE NO ONE!"

I don't think that kind of story arc would fit Kahn, but I'd take anti-hero Shang Tsung any day.

Shao Kahn becoming a hero is a blasphemy!

But Shao Kahn becoming an anti-hero... well... that is something worth considering... He's no fool and knows full well that to be an emperor he needs an empire. So "screw everybody, I win, save the world and get to rule!"

I would cringe so hard at that; my face would implode.

Kronika offers him the opportunity to rule if he helps her / allows her to alter the timeline.
He wouldn't gain anything from stopping her... if anything, he'd lose the opportunity to rule.

Is it 100% confirmed that all chapters follow the same mk9/x pattern?

Sonya will play a major part. They wouldn’t get Rousey for a bit part.

My guess is it’s like how Liu Kang finished Kung Laos chapter in Mk9. Sonya is last chapter but Cassie finishes Kronika

Sonya is said to be the first chapter. But someone else said the chapter structure is different this time and it won't be 4 fights with one, then move on. Which is good.

Shao Kahn defeating Kronika obviously won't happen- I don't think anyone here is saying it will. Totally not happening.

Also, Kahn or ANY villain defeating Kronika wouldn't exactly make them a hero- he could still be an evil son of a bitch and simply doing it because of his own best interest- it just so happens that it actually is beneficial to everyone this one particular time. It adds dimension to his character and some much needed diversity.

Look up the trope "Bad people do good things"- It would be under that category. I'm a writer and morally gray characters or ones with blue/orange morality (completely alien to our own) fascinate me way more than the strict black and white we see in this franchise almost all the time- at least when it comes to the heroes and villains. Well we have Raiden, I can give you that. But having someone who's normally a villain defeat a greater threat would be refreshing to see- even if it's Shang Tsung or Skarlet.

I'm even cool with a good guy who don't usually land the big win, getting it- like Jade for example. Jade defeating Kronika or at least stopping her for this particular game would be a nice change and totally propel her character further than ever before.

Jade- the warrior who took down Kronika > Kitana's bestie with the cool staff.

Just something different from the status quo. But I'm sure that's nothing we'll ever see in our lifetime.

Now that it's been brought up as an idea I have this suspicion that something like Kahn turning on Kronika to help defeat her actually might be the case. The reason is because I remember in one of the interviews MKO did with NRS staff during the launch event the guy confirmed that Kahn is indeed part of story mode, and the way he acted when revealing that was like there was a big surprise involving Kahn's role on it.
