I don't like it. He looks like the Terminator.

I'd much prefer a revamped design of his Shaolin Monks/Armageddon outfit. That to me was his best look.

I would personally love to see something like this. I loved his look in MKX but I think they need to slap some green back on to his outfit. The mask has the same function but changes design wise.

Honestly as someone who grew up playing the original Mortal Kombat games I’d love to see them take his look from Mortal Kombat Trilogy where he had the sleek leotard type suit and make it look like it’s made from found clothes, like maybe a torn kimono for the black top and a simple green vest and sash tied around his waist to give that signature loincloth look. Form fitting but flexible pants and some simple green cloth for wraps on his forearms and calves. The mask could be a respirator like an RZA brand respirator mask, so that it gives that kind of paintball mask look without looking like cheap plastic. His hood would just be a simple cloth hood he found. Reptile has always seemed to me more like the kind of warrior who wants to be nimble and quick and wouldn’t weigh himself down with complicated armor that could restrict his movements, plus his scaly skin could work as armor so he doesn’t need to wear any. His skin should also look very normal in my opinion. One of his signature things originally was the surprise of him secretly being a humanoid reptile, so if his skin looks very normal with slightly scaly textures and some barely noticeable green stripes or spots on his shoulder or knuckles that would make his appearance lean towards the uncanny valley which would immediately make you feel uncomfortable around him, which I think is the whole point. I think sleek, simple and decent but not too regal and gaudy fits the idea of Reptile very well

Honestly, asides from his MK9 alt, they have gotten Reptile wrong each and every time post-MK3. I just like his classic, ninja look. I don’t want to see any spikes, scales, tails, tongue, or claws. And I especially don’t want to see that hilarious beak in MKX. Less is more.

It certainly would please all those demanding he revert to his dull uninspired pallet swap days. But I thought the beauty of us moving on from the limits of digital actors was that characters could flourish beyond the constraints that came with that method and memory limitations of the days of old. Now (2002) they could truly turn into something unique and distinct from one another instead of just being the green, red, grey, black and purple Scorpion.and Sub-Zero.

I'm not saying I like his last two iterations. The costume are far to dull in both design and color and the creature design is far too uninspired. I'd prefer something more ferocious and raptor like.

This has always been my single most favorite piece of art related to Mortal Kombat. and how I would prefer to see Reptile if I can't have something closer to his MKDA design. Apparently people have violent internal reactions if Reptile so much as has spikes, big reptilian eyes or a tail.

It's not like his name is Reptile or anything right? Bahahahaha....

I think NRS did a great job with the current reptile design (even though I agree that his costumes have been extremely dull and forgettable.)

if you make him him more like a raptor you have to make him have biting, clawing, etc attacks which he has never had. He has always been an acid spitter and projectile based character, that’s his shtick.

Would make no no sense if he had crocodile jaws and didn’t use them. That’s part of Thebes reason I always hated his DA look. The other reason being because he doesn’t fit his role as a sneaking assassin. He stands out like a sore thumb.

Midway completely botched that whole design. Whoever is responsible for it had no idea what reptile is supposed to be: a humanoid, assassin that can blend in to his surroundings or stay hidden if need be.

Human reptile or mk9/mkx reptile FTW

Would it not make sense for him to maintain those attributes while adding the gameplay features you mentioned which would naturally be expected to come with a more beast like appearance?

Because lore wise, when Reptile does look like that it's him reverting to a more primitive animalistic state of being.

So it would make sense for him to start acting in a more feral manner. And speaking of lore, the man has not made contact with another member of his species in 20 years so I would say we are right on track for him to become as he wa-Bah everyone hated it so why let a little thing like preestablished rules of how the universe works get in the way. That's just not how MK rolls these days.

Let's be honest, those things you listed for what Reptile is "Supposed to be" are what you prefer him to be.

Reptile is meant to be a cunning sneak. His humanoid appearance has never played any crucial role when it comes to defining character traits.

Notice how every chance NRS got back in the day they shed him of his human visage and showed what he truly was; but could only do so in small canned animations, still images, artwork and commercials because they were unable to fully render him how they would have preferred him to be due to budgetary, technical, and likely skill limitations of the time.

You mention how him being a full lizard man would be detrimental to his ability to blend in. Let us not forget he can turn invisible and that has always been shown to be his primary method of blending/sneaking.

EDIT: And just to come back to the subject of furthering a characters repertoire and characteristics. Scorpion was all about spears and teleporting and then the 3D era came about and the guy is all about fire. Mileena, nothing but daggers until MK9 then she's hopping all over people and biting them.

Hmm.. the artwork itself looks great, but I'm not really digging it as a Reptile design. Don't like the glowing red eyes. It's fine, but a little too generic. I wouldn't get super hyped over it, but the mask looks kinda cool, I have to admit.

Onaga, Onaga, Onaga... yeah, you’re completely right... its just my preference for reptile. Always liked the humanoid look and disliked the tail and jaws.

I like to imagine reptile as a ninja who can blend into his surroundings and turn invisible and sneak around despite lookin like a humanoid reptile (saurian).

His mk1 story was based on this premise.

In DA they wanted to try a drastic change to his appearance thinking it would be cool and then wrote in a horrible retcon explanation for the new appearance that is extremely far fetched. No wonder NRS has obviously distances themselves from that whole debacle.

I wouldn’t be opposed to another character with reptilian jaws; it sounds like a cool moveset. But reptile is supposed to be a fearsome ninja trained in combat. Not a voracious mindless lizard. It just doesn’t fit in my opinion. Plus ninja garb on a tailed lizard looks silly.

You do you and ill do me, friend. But I think I have NRS on my side ;)

There are obscure characters that could still be used for that archetype, like Komodai, Tetsurri, and Tiamat. Reptile should stick to being Reptile, though, I'd agree.

My only thoughts on Reptile’s MKSM design is I wish he had a mask and not just a face bandage wrap, and I also wish his clothes looked a bit more like he just found them somewhere, like they’re normal clothes he just kinda threw on. So maybe just take off the shoulder plates and belt buckle and give him a mask and honestly that would be perfect

Nothing beats his MKSM attire.

Everything beats it.

Giving Reptile a green costume when he's already green is just redundant. This is why I prefer his MK4 look. Not only is it unique, it's not jarring to the eyes.

I will defend lizard Reptile to high heaven but I can't defend that design. It just has too many odd jumbled design decisions behind it. From the Liefeld-esque futuristic combat boots to the odd crotch guard and shoulder pads and last but not least, the nonsensical muzzle. I get why it's there but they should have just done away with it and stripped home completely of his pallet swap ninja roots. Without the muzzle it's actually not a bad design. It's not great but it wouldn't be off-putting.

I agree with you though, the only Green when it comes to Reptiles design should be from his skin, not his clothing or it's too redundant and it all just ends of blending together. See his MK9 design.

Honestly his clothing being green is my preference. I do see how him having green skin and green clothes is redundant, but that’s also why I always thought his skin should look more human in color. If his skins was smoother and more human colored, with hints of green and a faint scale texture to allude to his true reptilian nature without giving his true identity away then it would make more sense. His green clothes with his human form make sense as it’s a way to elude to him being a saurian, and that’s why I think that going back to his MK2 and MK3 designs and giving him that same silhouette and his clothing looking as close to those designs as possible without looking like paintball armor would be most effective. Reptile was originally meant to be a ninja who could blend in with humans and gather intelligence and kill from a distance with his acid spit and energy blasts. It just makes sense for him to be less lizard like and more of a reptilian humanoid

Everything in MK4 is jarring to the eyes. It's the worst looking game out of them all. Not just because of the early 3D tech, but the horrible costume designs and everything. Still don't get why they keep reusing Scorpion's MK4 design.... it's the worst one he's had by miles.
