What is up with Fujin?

Does NRS personally not like this guy? MKX looked like it was going to include him (or at least his fans thought so) ... but no dice. He was assigned to a rather small role at the beginning or the story and then not spoken of or heard from again. I mean, where did he go? Did he just vanish after going to consult the Elder Gods with Raiden?

Now we have MK 11. This time around Raiden is in his corrupted form and clearly not acting himself. Wouldn't this be the perfect time to bring in Fujin? Especially since a lot of folks seem to be thinking that Raiden overstepped his bounds? Yet there hasn't been a single sign of him (serisously, Where the hell did he go? Did he get eaten by some large beast or smited by some irked Elder God? Sorry...guess I'm still not over how he was handled in X). As I said, this would be the perfect time to bring Fujin in. It just doesn't look like they're going to do it.

And yes... I'm well aware that he could be one of the DLC characters. That would be cool as we'd get to play him. However, this game, I think he'd have the most reason to be there out of past games. He should be included in story and part of the main roster. We all know that most DLC characters are usually not included in story (with few exceptions). So again, does NRS really not like this character? Cause now it feels like they're going out of their way not to include him (This is of course IMO)... and I don't get why. He's not a bad character. Infact, seeing what they've done with some others, I think he could be one of the coolest.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on Fujin and why it seems they're actively trying to keep him out of any type of spot light (especially in a storyline in which he'd be completely relevant) ?

*for the record: This is not a complaint (as I love this game and fully believe it'll be their best yet). Not really. It's simply an observation about the game and it's current story as relates to a relevant character.

I fully agree and this is exactly what I've been saying since the announcement. Out of all the games and all the plots.... this one is perfect for Fujin.

Not only because there are more God / Elder God characters than ever, and the main plot seems to be a battle of the gods. But Fujin is supposed to be Raiden's closest ally. In the Japanese mythology these two characters are based on, they're almost inseperable.

As a huge Raiden fan, I want to see this relationship played out more, and for NRS to full explore the Dark Raiden arc and be at odds with his closest ally; Fujin.

I don't see what reasons NRS would have for passing up this opportunity. We can guess all we want, but it's all up in the air at this point.

It shouldn’t matter if NRS likes him or not. Fans have made it clear they want him in a game and they should listen. NRS seems to just do whatever they want and it’s pretty brutal if you ask me. I’m beating on a dead horse here but the rosters they’ve come up with for the past two games is shit. If they listened to the people more we would probably have an exciting roster on these games.

Maybe we’ll get Fujin and some other old school fan favorite’s for DLC but I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

DLC characters aren't a part of the story, so releasing Fujin that way wouldn't work in my eyes. It would be pointless beyond being a cash-grab.

Have to agree here. Yes it would let us play as him (which I'd love) but story wise he wouldn't matter. That's not how it should be... especially for the story angle in this particular game. He should be proper main roster character with his own chapter in this story.

However, prodigy004, I do feel your frustration with some of the casting choices of late.

Tanya, Bo rai cho, and Shao Kahn are DLCs in the stories of MKX and MK11 so that theory is ruled out. I think Fujin would be great for the story just as Havik would be for creating chaos in the timelines and Kotal kahn restoring the order in the timelines. (since he is about order and Hotoru wasnt that popular like Havik is) Fujin was straight trolled in MK9 when he was found in data mining, MKX again in story mode, and trolled in MK11. Maybe they just dont have a move list for him but Cetrion has me thinking otherwise. If they are keeping secrets out of the game by adding characters in the end of the story mode and later putting them in DLC, I would be down for that (:Like Fujin showing up at the end of the story mode or Mileena killing Dvorah or Havik being the cause of the Chaos with the hourglass etc) The roster isnt shit though, you guys are exaggerating. Yes it's missing Mileena, Quan Chi, And Kenshi who can all sit out a game anyways. Havik, Fujin and Sareena should be types of characters in DLCs, not guest characters.

I’ve never been a Fujin fan, but I completely understand the anxiety around him not making it into MKX or possibly MK11. He’s such an obvious choice that it baffles me NRS hasn’t just taken the plunge with him yet. I think he would make just about everyone happy that he’s in.

Then again the MK fan base is a collection of spoiled brats that throw temper tantrums even when they get what they want so...meh, what do I know?

Who said anything about Mileena, Quan or Kenshi here? This game's current story has Fujin written all over it. 1) Centered around Gods/Elder Gods. 2) Raiden's corruption...something Fujin definitely wouldn't stand by and just watch. Raiden seems to be loosing a lot of trust Earthrealm once had in him. Which, as Earthrealm's protector, is a pretty important thing to have. Fujin would get involved. I have no doubt. So no, IMO, Fujin should not just be relegated to DLC everytime he's going to appear. Everyone has their own opinions and that's fine. You're allowed to feel however you like about Fujin's inclusion. However to turn around and call other people "exaggerating" for wanting him as a main roster character (Or wondering where he is especially in a game where he'd be relevant as a main roster fighter) is simply not cool. I understand that you may or may not like him, and that's your right. However, don't act like others are being unreasonable for wanting him in (or wondering where he is).

Also, your argument kind of works for Tanya as she was featured multiple times in story. Still not pivotal for it though. However, Bo Rai Cho doesn't count because he was barely more than a cameo appearance in story mode. He had a short conversation with Raiden and then skip to he got his ass beat and is gone. So he really didn't DO anything. Hardly an "inclusion" in story.

I believe Fujin could have been (and should have been) a major part of this particular story. I'm not even a hardcore Fujin fan. Never been a main of mine. However, I just got to thinking that it made perfect sense for him to appear here and he didn't. That's all. It was an observation and I had wondered if anyone else felt the same.

It's fine if others don't feel the same or even care. However, it's not right to call those who do care "exaggerating" like they're being irrational about the situation. Especially since no one is going crazy with this. Some folks (especially his fans...which he does have some) are just wondering what's up with his situation. That's ok.

The poor man’s Raiden will never be apart of the main roster until Raiden is out of the spotlight (never), or until we get another MKA-type of game where they have no choice but to include filler bores like Fujin, Kobra, Darrius etc.

After showing up in MKX story but being missing from roster and dlc, I was almost positive NRS saved him to be a major part of MK11. Considering the storyline and existence of gods, it's weird that he was passed over once again. Heck, I thought at the time they would've put him in MK:DA so what do I know.

MK9 is still my favorite roster.

Well given how they’ve approached the subject of Fujin so far (or, you know, how they’re completely ignoring it) this, sadly, may be true. Does not mean that it’s right though. The frustrating thing is that Fujin (or any character for that matter) doesn’t have to be a boring filler character (and some don’t think that he is) ... he was just another good NRS concept that was handled wrong and not allowed to fully explore his potential. They could do some interesting things with his wind powers if they tried (and actually sat down to brainstorm it). Fujin could be so much cooler than he is now. NRS has proven they can turn characters around for the better with a little tlc for the character. Stryker from MK 9 comes to mind. Love him or hate him... there is no denying that he was way better in that game than any of the others he was in. His fan base definitely grew with MK9. Hell, look at what they just did with Jacqui! She was ALMOST universally hated in MKX. With the word boring commonly associated with her. Lots of people were pissed when they found out Jacqui, of all fighters, would be taking up a slot on the main roster... WUT?! I mean... how fucking DARE they, right? I’ll admit it, I was one of those people. Then they showed here reveal trailer and gameplay ... Almost (and I say almost because there were some that still weren’t having it) everyone changed their minds about Jacqui Briggs. Suddenly she was quite welcome and people were excited to play her and some even said they’d main her. Amazing turn around, no?

That could be Fujin. Or quite literally any other MK character past and present. NRS proved that with work and a bit more imagination, no character has to be a failure or boring or filler.

Gameplay aside though, the fact still remains that Fujin is a perfect fit for this story. Especially considering the current state of Raiden. And who knows? Who even says that Raiden will survive this story? Kronika is pretty pissed at him and, being higher than an Elder God, I’m sure it’s well with in her power to get rid of him (especially considering Raiden is no longer an Elder God and hasn’t been for some time).

RE: What is up with Fujin?

I don't think the Dark Raiden plot is going to have as much focus as we thought it would immediately after MKX. The time crisis will quickly take precedence after the first chapter, and any conflict over Raiden's sinister new motivation will probably be taken up with Past Raiden.

Previously, I agreed with the idea that this game's setup was a prime opportunity for Fujin. By now I'm not so sure. So far he's never struck me as much more than Raiden's lamer sidekick, and given what the story direction of the new game looks like now, I'm not terribly confident that would change very much. Not that I think it's impossible to write a strong role for him -- he could align himself with Past Raiden perhaps, or take a more unexpected tack and fight alongside Kronika to undo all the harm that Raiden has caused, even if it means taking a chance on rematching Shinnok -- but the character focus in this game seems to be elsewhere. Kronika may have the most beef with Raiden, but it feels like more of the story is about how everyone else is handling the situation.

I don't personally care much about Fujin, and the more intense the conversation around him gets the more I feel like he's overhyped. But I'd like to see all his fans get their wish, as DLC if nothing else. His powers can fill a void that Ermac left, since wind and telekinesis are basically the same idea with a different visual effect. Raiden does need peers like Fujin and Bo' Rai Cho to play off of. He could surprise me by having more visual spectacle and engaging personality than I've come to expect. If they can make me feel something about him, I'll be happy.

Hopefully Fujin is in the story mode.

A story this large and encompassing better include a lot more characters than are on the base roster. I hope rain , mileena, Shang, even reptile and ermac are part of it because it will make ZERO sense if these characters are not at the very least referenced in dialogue.

But id rather see them.

All interesting points. I also like your ideas of ways he could be used in the story. I find the one about Fujin siding with Kronika Intriguing. On the one hand he knows that Raiden screwed up and things should be set right. However, on the other hand, I think he’d struggle with siding with Kronika because of the extremes she herself wants to go to. A hard decision for him and it would be interesting to see it play out.

A lot of MK fans feel the way you do about Fujin. It’s understandable considering that (IMO) NRS never really tried with him. Feels like he was created then thrown into the series and not really ever looked at again. They never put much time into his character or his importance as a fellow God of Raiden.

However, I really feel this could be the game that changes all that for him. If they put the time into improving him (like they did for Jacqui) people might change their minds.

Even if you turn out to be right and they don’t really focus on the Dark Raiden thing yet... Fujin could still have a significant role in story. Kronika herself being an extremely powerful enemy to contend with could make things even worse for the heroes of earth by bringing back Shinnok. If that happens (and I think it will) the good guys are going to need all the divine help they can get. Adding Fujin to the mix along with Cetrion and Raiden could only improve their odds. Not to mention the fact that it looks like past Raiden will be on Kronika’s side. So both sides will have a Raiden.

I don’t know where the story is actually going to go... but I truly think that if they handle him right and improve on him, this could be the game that redeem’s Fujin to the fans who think he’s just a filler sidekick character. He can really be so much more than that if NRS just makes him the powerful God he should be.

I agree. Fujin should have been in the base roster for MK11, and it was a huge mistake on NRS's part for leaving him out considering the events of the MK11 story. Jax should have stayed retired in MKX (or at least Sonya or Johnny should've been benched) since Cassie and Jacqui are in. NRS claims to listen to their fans, and in all honesty, I don't think they give a sh*t about what their fans want. It took them over 20 years to actually put Tremor into the roster. If they actually listened, then he would have been in the roster a long time ago.

Fujin has a lot of wasted potential. Wind abilities is one of the most versatile elements NRS has at their disposal, and yet, they're wasting it. Seeing Cetrion's moveset does make me feel more hopeful that Fujin will be playable, since the assets for wind moves exist now. However, that still leaves wasted lore and story potential.

EDIT: I constantly see Rain and Mileena fans acting like they've had it bad. Realistically, Fujin fans have it the worst. Their frustration with NRS is definitely not unfounded.

He really should've. Not to mention he's the one "vet" that I don't think most people would give a crap about sitting out for one game- especially considering MKX kept foreshadowing his retirement/death. However, Jax being in or out of MK11 has nothing to do with Fujin. If NRS wanted him in, he'd be in. I want Fujin in badly myself, but him not making the cut doesn't have anything to do with anyone who's on the roster.

Playing the blame game is pointless.

I'm hoping he's DLC...At this point it would be RIDICULOUS if he's not. If Fujin's not DLC...oh boy..I think it's safe to say NRS have heard our pleas but blatantly does not care and have made the "God Of Wind"- The "God Of Never Coming Back".

Good luck Fujin fans, may the odds ever be in your favor.

“The God Of Never Coming Back” I don’t know why exactly... but this just made me lol. The sad thing is it may be so true. Also Insanely frustrating because, again, it doesn’t have to be. Fujin’s not the only victim...NRS has done this crap with so many of their introduced characters. Like it’s “one and done”... the character doesn’t have a stellar first showing? Well then, screw said character(s) and move on to do it all over again! Instead of merely listening to the fans complaints of the character(s) and sitting down and saying “Ok guys, we’ve heard what is wrong... now how do we fix it?” To which the answer is NOT throw thirteen more new characters at the wall and hope some of them stick with fans. No, just no. Improve the characters you HAVE. All of the failed MK characters were actually GREAT concepts. Really. They were just executed poorly and NRS chose not to try to fix them.

There has been a small spark of hope that NRS has changed their bad habits in the form of Jacqui Briggs (yes I know I’ve mentioned her already but I will continue to do so because she is just such a perfect example). What they did with her is the correct way to handle a new character that failed initially. This is what they should have done all along. Every character in MK has the potential to be fantastic. NRS just has to allow them to realize that potential.

Thanks for the chuckle Ahnka. Was having a pretty shit day... then I saw that post and I just couldn’t help myself. It was needed though.

I’d rather he be more important than DLC... however it would be cool to have him either way. At least as DLC he’ll be playable. It will just be a big missed opportunity story-wise as he could have been great.

Lol No problem TomTaz.

If I had it my way, Fujin would've been DLC in MKX and MAIN ROSTER in MK11. I think he deserves more than a DLC spot this game- but sadly we have to take what we can get. This is where I start to get even more nervous due to guest spots and all- we don't know how many they'll throw at us and that of course limits the spots for actual MK characters. Funny, my friend who's not even that much of an MK fan, he told me at work "That rosters kinda thin, is it not? I hope they don't do too many guest characters for DLC- I'm sure the fans play these games for Mortal Kombat characters...they shouldn't be scared to give them that."

That like...amazed me. Haha. If we have 5 MK characters and 1 guest per Kombat Pack- That's 10 extra MK characters when the DLC is all said and done and I'm sure Fujin would HAVE to be one of them.

I really hope NRS didn't overdo it with the guests this time.

I'd like to see Fujin as DLC. However I don't think it's too likely with the number of MKX+New Characters. I feel like Trilogy characters will get most of the spotlight for DLC.

However,

We're getting Frost in MK11...did anyone really ever think we'd see Frost playable again? I loved MKDA, I'm looking forward to playing/seeing her again. I'll admit it's a let down we only saw Fujin in a cutscene(s)? in MKX but NRS made the effort for a pretty cool battle sequence at least. MKX starting with the MK4 era storyline could've made no mention of him...but hey it was something. NRS can't hate him that much. Li Mei, Bo and Frost being included in cutscenes was something..

Also looking back in the past couple games we've had some suprise (arguably) characters along the way. (Skarlet, Bo, Tremor, Tanya) The point being, it's not impossible we'll see Fujin playable again in some form. NRS has shed some love for miscellaneous and 3D era characters as of late.

Some sprinkles here and there....I just wish there were more sprinkles.

DLC characters aren't a part of the story, so releasing Fujin that way wouldn't work in my eyes. It would be pointless beyond being a cash-grab.

Both Tanya and Bo' Rai Cho were in the MKX story mode, so let's not rule it out.

We could alwayd end up getting a DLC character that had a cameo in the story. We'll just have to wait and see.

Very true. Frost, most people assumed would only ever return as a skin for Sub-Zero. SO to see her as an individual character on the roster and particularly one that may play a pretty significant role in the story- is a pretty big deal and a downright win for a 3D era character.

They have been bringing 3D era characters back, just slowly like you said, one here, two there, one over there. I guess it's better than not having any.

But we'll see how the DLC turns out. I'm still hoping for at least maybe 2 more 3D era characters(that aren't Quan Chi/Kenshi). Though I know the DLC will definitely skew more on the trilogy side- also let's not forget about Takeda/Kung Jin- I don't see them being left out entirely..
