Alt costume expections
03/11/2010 07:03 PM EST
This was a heavily discussed issue with the last game and the community stated pretty clearly that alt costumes are a valued element of MK. I want to know what everyone expects and hopes for in the alt. department.

A few things to keep in mind, though. Alt costumes usually file under 3 catagories: story-reflecting, fan-pleasing, and humor-driven. If I'm missing one, post it. It's sort of rare for even 2 of the 3 categories to merge, so if you propose a costume, feel free to elaborate why you think that costume works for that character and category.

Story-oriented costumes, in my opinion, should dominate the batch. One of the larger praises I gave MKD was that it redesigned most of the returning characters to fit the new events, and I would love to see that every game. I would also like consistency, though. Hair length, facial features, and overall stature should not change in this category. I'm talking to you, Subzero, you pony-tailed scarless bastard. Then again, the scar was AWOL entirely, so meh.

Fan costumes are good in cases where the character looks incredibly different than his/her first incarnation. Reptile would be a great example, and truthfully MKD Subzero could have used this as well. This worked well for Kano too, but felt like overkill for Scorpion and Kenshi which seemed like mild variations of the same costume.

Joke costumes are good options for characters with little history or limited stories (Ex: Darrius). Nonetheless, costumes are one department I kind of want to keep serious in tone. Joke costumes are okay for a while, but I get sick of them pretty quickly.

Anyway, I've written too much. Thoughts?

I prefer costumes that make sense to the wearer. Reptile's look in Deadly Alliance was horrible, absolutely horrible. And now he suddenly has more of a ninja look in Armageddon/Shaolin Monks?

I would like it if each character would look normal. Scorpion has been the only character to stay this way in each game that he was in. Scorpion hasn't gotten out of control in his waredrobe unlike the others.

Such as Sub-Zero... I'm sorry, he looked too much like Shredder, that was out of whack. They could have come up with something much cooler to give Sub-Zero for his new armor in Deception, but instead, they would rather make him an icy Shredder than anything else.

Sonya's wardrobe also has been getting out of control. She's supposed to be a military chick, not some slut. Her secondary costume in Deadly Alliance was a good look, what was that skanky, "I gotta show people I wear thongs" look for her primary? And now she also shows us that she wears no bra since people literally noticed that she was clearly cold in her one picture for MK vs DC.

These costumes seriously need to get back in order and actually look decent for once for each character. I just want normal looking characters since MK isn't really this fantasy game... It has more of a Gothic tone than anything else, why should the costumes suddenly get out of whack?

Costumes do need to look good, but also make sense to the person wearing it. That's all.

This and the leotards should be reduced. Girls should start wearing mini battle dresses especially Jade. glasses

The way I would prefer it would be 3 costumes,

1: Their main costume for the game. This is the design the devs intended for that specific game.

2.A classic cosutme. The traditonal costume for an older character. If it is a new character it should be more of an MK1-2 design.

3.Anything at all. Could be serious, story related, joke, or just completely random.

I think this would make all players happy. And just remember there is no such thing as too many costumes.

i am going to asume that 'MK vs DCU" chars will retain their costume in the new game thus speeking for one of their costumes in mk9.

scorp: Flaming head MKDA look.
sub: Shredder
Sonya: mk3
Jax: mkda/mk2
Baraka: shirtless and bloody body.
Kano: White costume MK1
Liu Kang: zombie and human (even tho i hate it, its all there really is)
shang tsung: MK3
raiden: Dark Raiden
Kitana: something new. maybe with full leggings. more of a sleek look

other chars i wanna throw out there, if they end up included:

smoke;MKD outfits
sektor: MKA and a human version somehow.
cage:mkda and a casual but professional look.
quan chi: mkda and mk4 alt
ermac: mkd primary and a new look.
havik: both his mkd
ashrah: mkd primary and something with armor and fabric combined. no hat.
hotaru; mkd primary and alt, no flags tho.

I might be in the minority here, but I'd want one of two things, if not both:

1) A clothing editor so that you can swap in and out costume PARTS. So if I want Jax to look like a samurai, it might take 7 or 8 parts, but once I acquire them, I can do that. Or, something a bit more simple, if I wanted to remove his metal arms and give him a cool "Jax" look instead of racial stereotype Jax from MK:DA, I could do that as well.

If I want to put Sonya in military fatigues, maybe it just takes the pants, the shirt, the sunglasses, the boots and the beret. Or if I want to make her look like slave girl Leia from Star Wars because I'm a pervert or whatever, hey, whatever floats your boat?

2) If they don't go that route, the way Tekken, VF and others have gone, then I think they should look at Dead or Alive: That game doesn't just have one alt costume and MAYBE a 3rd costume. Some characters have as many as NINE alt outfits.

Sure, the men usually only have 4 outfits at the most, but that's just because Itigaki is obsessed with wide eyes young women with huge assets.

Tangent aside, I'm mainly trying to say that I'd love to see the MK team give us a lot of choices, so if we hate one or two outfits, we still have more options.

I also hated the Shredder look for Sub Zero. I thought that the alt outfits for Jax, Nitara and Cyrax were terrible in MK:DA. But that was it. Those were my options.

So that's what I'm really hoping for in the next MK. Either a solid clothing editor with tons of options like Tekken, VF or Soul Calibur or a list of a lot of options like DOA has for their characters in each game.

What am I expecting? That's easy:

2 outfits, 3 at the most.
Relatively drastic reimaginings of returning characters with an alt costume that's much closer to their past looks, or a simple variation on their new lok (think Ermac's alt in MK:D).

That's about it.

I have a similar idea. I hoping that they go the VF5 route where you can add clothing, and items to your character. So when you go online everybody's Scorpion will probably be different.

I am sorry but i dont agree with either of you, respecfully.

Its when we accept all the attention that these extra time-consuming modes or features take, that we take away from the overall gameplay.

IM not saying its a bad idea. Actually while i was typing that. I was thinking. These things could be done if they are using the mkvsdc engine, its already done, all they need to work on is moves and combos, fatalities and costumes.

so im going to rephrase my opinion. I dont agree AT THIS POINT because i dont know how far along they are in terms of all around game development. And IF they bring back the current engine, and just expand on it. It is very possible for a content-filled game depending on release aim.

remember when we asked for every character, create a character, kontent, konquest and online? I think it was called MKA.... enough said.

As of this point, id rather sacrifice the extra 2 day obcession with creating NEO or Samanosuke or color swapping scorpion to make human reptile, to have an actually good, in-depth fighter. and any mk fan whos out for the good of the franchise should feel somewhat the same to some degree.

quality over quantity. how much do you play "devil within" in tekken 5? or the adventure mode in tekken6? you failed to point thos out. although its not crate a character, its still extra content aside form the fighitng that turns out horrible.

the only thinng i can see that will not ruin the concentration of the development team. is colour maniplulation.

i know i seem like kind of a dick, but i feel it needs to be said. Enough of the I WANT THIS AND THIS AND THISunless it has to do with the main focus of the game. i just want a solid figher FOR ONCE.

my only demand for the next game, is a solid state of story, and more 2-3 hit combos to impliment into chain combos.

C+Ped from another thread woo!

I do believe in the whole 2nd costume should look nothing like the primary. So the primary will be more like their original costume from their debut.

Sonya: Blood red camo trousers and jacket, short if not bald hair cut, face paint.

Kitana: Black catsuit, masked, some blue trim.

Shao Kahn: something involving a redesign of this helm: http://armstreet.com/image/236/big_img_2009011460733.jpg Imagine what Shao Kahn would wear if he was going to take over the Arctic. So lots of dead animal fur and he doesn't look as much of a S+M lover.

Mileena: Unveiled. Something similar to what Baraka would wear. She looks like a serious female samurai/warrior rather than Kitana's cock thirsty sister. With a trap.

Scorpion: Unmasked. Looking more like Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden.

Sub Zero: Unmasked, possibly topless, not sure really. Gorgeously tailored Ice Dragon style trousers though.

Tanya: A purple and yellow geisha outfit. Its more based on what should would have worn in Edenia as an ambassador.

Onaga: A redesign of his body and face to make him look more of an oriental dragon. Also to make him look more like the MK Dragon in the logo!

Sheeva: tribal based. Animal bones strapped to arms and legs, a centaur skull on her shoulder.

Sindel: Either a "She-Kahn" style outfit or long tattered robes, covering her appearance.

Cant think of anymore that wouldn't be obvious: Shang's robes/ Quan's MKDA style outfit etc.

Other than gore the biggest complaint of MKvsDC was the lack of content. So for them to put in more content this time is expected. And the consensus seems to want alts. the most. I do think they will take the MKvsDC mechanic, and expand on it so my idea doesn't seem that crazy. Ed said there probably won't be mini games which means they could spend more time adding good content such as alts.

very true. But the fact that the biggest complaint other than gore is not gameplay, is all that i need to be happy. It means that they are starting to do something right. Im not gonna play MK9 every day until MK10 to look at concept pictures and funny cereal box ads.

I throw that thing into my system to ahve intense matches of anticipation and wits vs other skilled players. and to me, thats all im going to need.

i say, rape the hell out of that fighting mechanic. Then if they have more time and they are 100% happy with it. Move onto other modes and/or extras. If they can do that. everybody will be happy.

Not much love for Subzero's MKD appearance. If your primary reason is because he looks like Shredder, then I have no counter argument. There's just no getting by it: he looks like Shredder.

But if you think it looks bad, then I disagree. It was the overhaul he needed yet it kept the core ninja vestments. It also complimented his leader role, much like his MKDA alt did. MKDA alt = Ceremonial dress; MKD main = Battle dress.

I do want to add that character masks should be removable despite the costume. I don't think this would strain the development process much and it would add variety to the characters. The command could be inputted even before the announcer says "fight," so the removal wouldn't interfere with gameplay.

Also not sure if I'm crazy about importing the MKvsDC costumes. Perhaps if they were an additional third option for returning characters I wouldn't care, but those costumes were designed with the MK2 aesthetic in mind. I don't think they'd work in a post-Armageddon game, especially Subzero, Sonya, and any other character who has aged significantly.

As everyone said there should be two costumes - a costume that actually makes sense for the person wearing, and a old school fanservice costume.

The biggest culprits for stupid/bad costumes as I've talked about in the Sonya thread would be the Special Forces characters. They're costumes have always been terrible. They're a military organization that doesn't look, sound, or act military at all. There is nothing military about anything Sonya or Jax have ever worn. Sonya and Jax have always looked like strippers/gym enthusiasts with a psuedo para-military fetish.

Give them badass authentic-ish military gear and uniforms and save the spandex and medallions for alts.

Dedicated, hopeless...Li Mei fan.

I would like something similar to Tekken or Soulcalibur, where you get 2/3 costumes, then you can edit them yourself for a unique twist.

What I don't understand is why MK has to stop at 2 costumes, or even 3. Games like DOA have numerous costumes for each character, and games like Tekken 6 have the ability to edit a characters costume.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't want a huge chunk of time to go into the process of making multiple costumes for everyone.

I'm just sick of getting the bare minimum from what was once my favorite fighter.

I'd like it to be something like in Soul Calibur 3, 2+2 system:

1st costume... impossible to customize
2nd costume... impossible to customize
3rd costume... same as first, customizable
4th costume... same as second, customizable

I'd only add more options for customization. Instead of just changing the color of the costume parts, I'd give you the option to add/remove details.

Generally, female characters should look less slutty, at least in their primary costumes. I'd definitely keep some of the designs from previous games like Ermac's MKD primary, Kira's MKD primary, Raiden's MKD design from the renders of the game (the in game costume looked different), Reiko's MKA primary, Sub-Zero's MKD primary, Quan Chi's MK4 design (looked so scary, loved it), Kung Lao's MKSM design and some others...

I'd like to see a greater choice in alternate costumes for the next game. 3-4 per character(or even more) would be a good amount, imo. I agree that the costumes should mainly be those that are story based. A joke one for each character would be nice as it would be interesting to see the characters in more laid back attire and letting theirhair down so to speak. That being said, I dislike the sort of stereotypical stuff that they give the likes of Jax and Darrius. That sort of thing shouldn't be in.
I'd like to see the new costumes more edgier and darker than before to capture that MK feel a little more. Some classic outfits could be redesigned for this. Everything shouldn't be so perfect. These are warriors we're dealing with and it'd be interesting to see battle worn costumes alongside their best threads.
I'm surprised so many aren't happy with Sub-Zeros MKD look. The majority loved it back when it was first revealed. I still do and the fact it seems Shredder influenced can only be a good thing in my eyes.

I didn't care for it much. I thought it was better than his MKD alt.

I definitely agree with getting rid of Jax and Darrius's costumes. The other person that is an example of costumes that shouldn't happen is Jarek. MK4, yellow-orange vest and green pants. Ok, not bad, makes sense, pretty normal look, but he's a normal guy from Earthrealm. Got that. Armageddon comes along, he gets a new look and....the hell? Where did he get both of those outfits? That made no sense to his character. And the Alt? Ugliest combination of colors, one of the worst costumes IMO.

So, for the future, no Jareklike costumes.

some alts I'd like to see:

Scorpion/ Noob Saibot: Pre-death unmasked. I know it'd just be a Japanese guy and a half Chinese/ half caucasian guy, but I always wanted to see both how they originally looked.
Noob Saibot/ Ermac/ Rain/ Chameleon/ Khameleon/ Smoke/ Sektor: Unmasked. It's time we saw what they all actually look like.
Goro: with a Red Cape, a'la the MK1 comic book.
Shao Kahn: Unmasked. It's really time old horn face makes his fighting game debut without the helmet.

RE: Alt costume expections

I like the idea of them being mainly storyline-influenced or for nostalgia purposes. One example of an alt-costume I'd like to suggest is one for Scorpion:

I'd like to see the MK Team take a chance with him, and present something less cartoonish and more like a ninja. Maybe tone down the yellow some, or even remove it completely. However, I think this would be too radical a move to pull without pissing off fanboys, so make it one of Scorpion's alts -- that way people can play as a new look Scorpion, or they can leave it.

Whereas, I'd like to see some of the girls move off their colour-scheme. Kitana losing the blue would not be tragic, in my opinion. I feel it ties her down to one particular look that has sort of out-grown its purpose. Give her something that looks more regal, and perhaps even change her colour-scheme up. Give her some red clothes, or something. An alt could be a classic Kitana outfit, but you could also include another alt in which she could wear purple and green as a tribute to her mother and her best friend, who could be out of action in the storyline of the game.

Kitana wearing purple and green may be deemed "too ugly" by some as a primary, but as a secondary or tertiary outfit, I don't think people would be too offended if she had "tribute attire."

For new characters, I think story should be the most driving aspect, and it is then that I think the costumes should be closer together. Not exactly the same, of course, but leave the character's face, hair, etc. the same. I think they need to establish a look which can hold up heading into the next game. It's less important for older characters who are defined otherwise. An example might be putting a character in armour for his first attire, and then putting him in robes for his alt. Don't change anything too dramatic.

I dig nostalgia, so I definitely enjoy at least one costume for each person to be their classic outfit, or at least close to it. I don't want them to be extremely simple as they were, but the same look just updated and maybe some design/pattern simple changes etc.

It's because of this that I really felt MK:Deadly Alliance had the best primary and alternate costumes. Kano had his new + old(And if both players played as him, one would be in his MK3 colors), Sub Zero had his new updated original + his classic MK3 unmasked version. Scorpion had his updated original + his flaming skull. Same could be said for the rest of the characters(Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Kitana, Cyrax etc.) except the joke ones which I felt were lame(Jax and Cage).

I'd like to see the same approach for the next enstallment, and if they decide to give us 3 costumes total, I would like it to be:

Primary = Storywise/Updated
Secondary = Classic MK 1-4
Third = Revamped/Dark/Realistic
-These would resemble something like those sketches of the characters, where each character would still maintain their trademark looks and attires etc. but they would have a much more brutal cutthroat look to them. No thongs or bikinis, no unnecissary flashy suits or accessories, just battle worn, blood stained, fighting attire resembling each fighters look. Kano in rags with a knife. Liu in pants w/ wrist tape, Sonya w/ pants and an army jacket/shirt w/ handgun at her side and a hat, Scorpion/Sub-Zero in their ninja getups w/ swords on back etc...Stuff like that. Less cartoony/plastic/action figure/joke looking, and straight to the point practical battle attire.
