How is this game MK 9?
What happened to MK 8?
Don't tell me that MKvDC is classed as a main series entry, and not what it is supposed to be - a spin-off. Spin-offs don't count in the main series (the MK titles with numbers).
If MKvDC is considered MK8, that means it's a part of the main canon series and that the MK universe is set in the DC universe.
Is the MK community really OK with that?
Personally, I'm not. MK and DC should be separate.

You know, before MK9 was released, I was completely with ya. "Why the hell would a spin-off game be treated a numerical sequel?" I said.
Well, because Ed Boon started calling the game MK9 prior to the reveal. I don't why he did that. I think that was stupid, but whatever. I eventually played the game, and after all the retcons and plot holes in the story mode, numbering sequels didn't seem to matter so much anymore.
I'm just not emotionally invested enough in this series to worry about these things anymore. I'm excited for MK10, but the days of fan-raging are over. Whatever happens, happens.

Honestly, I feel the same way. MK9 doesn't really make sense since MK vs. DC is in its own universe. This is pretty much the new MK1.

Pretty sure Ed's names the games based on the engine's development evolution. Rather than their place in the story line.
For example:
MK1 - First Engine
MK2 - Second Engine
MK3/UMK3/Trilogy - Third Engine
MK4/MK Gold - Fourth Engine
Deadly Alliance - Fifth
Deception - 6th
Armageddon - 7th
MK Vs DCU - 8th
MK 2011 - 9th
Nothing to do with canon or story lines.

Glad to know there are others out there that agree with me on this.
Even if they called it MK8, I see it more of a reboot than a continuation, and thus it is another MK1. For this, I personally call it MK (2011).
Hopefully they start using sub-titles again with the next game. Don't want to be referred to as both MK10 and MK2 (2014). Just give us a sub-title (Deadly Alliance, Deception, etc).

While I simply refer to it as the most recent game as opposed referencing the year it was released, I'll most likely refer to it as MK2011 once a sequel's released. As for ignoring the original canon, despite the release of this reboot, I wouldn't count out the original canon just yet. The original stories we all grew up with remain in existence, and we always have the ability of looking at this game as an add-on to the original canon, or an updated MK3 to accommodate the latest in technology, with all the characters from that era, and a few notable exceptions. As much as I don't like the new direction taken for the story, it's not like I enjoyed the directions they took since Deception either. I don't look at it as superseding the original stories in any way, shape, or form, but as a way for the creators to express a few things that they never would've had the chance to do if Netherrealm Studios was still stuck to Midway.
But yes, calling MK9 when in the current canon it'd be 8 is a tad unusual.

I can understand that. A lot of the old cannon has remained intact (Scorpion and Sub Zero rivalry, Noob Saibot's relation to Sub Zero, etc). And a lot of that will carry over into this new version (the whole reason this version seemed to exist was to prevent Armageddon afterall). There are just a lot of points that diverted too far away and seemed to kill some of the character, points that have already been debated to death. We will see what happens with the next one (it will be really interesting to see which direction they take Liu Kang).
I confess a large part of it is bitterness on my part. I am one of the few that really got interested in the storylines that MKDA and MKD created, and wanted to see where the characters would go from there. They really seemed to be investing a lot more creative energy into the series during that time. Instead, we got Battle Royale MK for MK7, with so many questions that will now remain unanswered. Starting over, for the new generation of fans. I guess it could be called MK1.2011? MKT2?

I do accept this as MK9. It's the 9th Traditional 1v1 fighting game.

Not if you count UMK3, MKT, MKG, MKU as separate games from their parent series entry.
If we're speaking with respect to the specific story lines, then yes. This would be 9th...

Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 2
Mortal Kombat 3 (including Ultimate and Trilogy)
Mortal Kombat 4 (including Gold)
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (including Tournament Edition)
Mortal Kombat: Deception (including Unchained)
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
Mortal Kombat (2011)
This is the canon series. Mortal Kombat VS DCU isn't part of it, it's a spin-off.
So no, I do not accept this as MK9, however, if you say MK8, no one knows what the hell you're talking about. XD

MK9 is quicker to type than MK (2011). It's the ninth main game made, just not in story sequence.
My main question to you would be this: Why get enraged about it NOW? A little late to the party, aren't we?

Better late than never?
But I really don't see it as a big deal to begin with.

I accept it and like it as MK9, I don't mind weather the next one is MK10 or
MK-(insert title here) but I wouldn't want it to be MK2 2015 :)

I personally consider MK9 the eighth Mortal Kombat game, but the community kind of forces me to call it MK9 anyway. I'm not going to just go all rebel and call it MK8 everywhere because that would be annoying.
I personally judge whenther something is an entry in a series based on whether or not it acts as a continuation to the story in any way. So UMK3 wasn't the same as MK4 because it didn't continue the story, it just expanded upon it with more characters, just as MK trilogy didn't continue the story, but instead compiled the first three games into one, and same goes for MK Gold. Since MK vs. DC was not canon with the rest of the MK saga and did its own thing, not to mention that half of the story didn't even revolve around MK characters at all. It seems like MK vs DC is the black sheep, being the only "sequel" that isn't a sequel.
However, more people seem to judge whether or not a new game warrents its own number based on whether or not the gameplay changes (While still remaining a fighting game), and since it does have its own unique mechanics (especially considering the next-to no adjustments between MKDA-MKA) you have to agree that it changes up the formula a lot.
Personally, this game is the real MK8 to me. But it doesn't really bother me that other people call it MK9 enough for me to try to change it.

If it's a great game, then who cares what you call it? I mean, it's not like it's title on the case is MK9. It's just Mortal Kombat.
And, just to get technical, "MK9" doesn't really count. It's just twisting stories that already happened. The story stopped at Armageddon. From here on out, it'll be like watching reruns of your favorite show. Because all they're doing is going over a "What-If" Storyline.
Late Replies ftw.

The storyline writer is omnipotent in their own, fictive cosmos and they can do anything they wish with it – even altering the characters, time, place and whatnot. At least MK/DC has a distinctive engine unlike any other fighter.
It is a little bit nonsensical, yes, but creator Ed Boon has decided this way. It's a rational decision: he doesn't want his brainchild to be forgotten.

MK2011 is not a "What if?" storyline; it is the storyline.
It's not like the game is completely non-canon and they're saying, "If things were different, this would happen." No, all those things did happen, from Sub-Zero's abduction to the death of Nightwolf. It is all canon.
I can't wait until MK10 to see what comes next.

Mortal Kombat hasn't been numerically labeled since MK4. MK9 is just saying that this is the ninth major MK fighting game... it has nothing to do with continuity... that is unless they name the next game MK 10... which I doubt they'll do.
