Ok first of I believe Ed was saying something of the top of his head when he mentioned the whole who wasn't cyber b4 may ne now but heres my theory.

I do not believe the mk team would risk automating Sub Zero 1 or 2 because of the fan base of them characters. So I am almost 100% confident that wont happen. I believe that if the Lin Kuei is capable of turning humans into robots I also think that they are capable of kidnapping a less popular character maybe Rain or even Chamelion and experimenting on them.
I personally believe most of the 'main' characters will remain somewhat similar storywise to the origanal

I don't know if you know this, sir, but there are exactly one million and three topics about this exact subject already.
Trust me. I counted.

Why would they turn those two characters into Cyborgs? It'll p*** off the fans of those characters. Yes, even Chameleon has fans.

I wonder if Boon is aware of the massive aftershock his cyborg comments created.

Shit, that's why he said it.

Automating classic characters like Sub-Zero 1 or 2, Chameleon or Rain to be cyborgs is absolutely absurd.furious

Actually, now that we know from the EGM interview that the story is going to end in tragedy and every time Raiden changes history, it'll go horribly wrong, I think that means that at the very end of the story, all the changes will have to be undone or rendered non-canon some way or another to save everybody. Perhaps Raiden's last change will be to prevent himself from sending the message or alter what it says somehow.

Anyway, my point is that the likelihood of any scenario where a hero loses, dies, or gets horribly fucked is now pretty high, including the idea that Younger Subbie doesn't escape automation this time.

And while I did think it was a terrible idea when I thought this game would be a permanent change to the canon, now I figure "fuck it, why not go for it" since it won't actually matter or carry over into the future.

*prays for a story with actual consequenses* Somehow, I doubt the game will be as useless as you describe. I want fighters to change/die. I really dont care who. Personally, I think Shao or Raiden will die. Or both. YES!

Well I thought deliberately retconning all the old games was a horrible idea from the get-go and a dark "everything goes wrong" story about how messing with the past is a horrible mistake with unforseen consequences, like the movie The Butterfly Effect, is EXACTLY what I was hoping for the moment I heard what the story would be. I couldn't be happier with this direction.
Besides, tragically getting everybody killed and accidentally helping the badguys win perfectly fits with the atmosphere and theme of a Mortal Kombat game.

I just dont think the mk team would let 3 years of effort end up being moot.

If Raiden did "undo" his actions, he would die at Shao Kahn's hands in the normal timeline, which as I said before, would be fine! Just please for the love of God do something in the story that matters... SOMEBODY!

It's not moot if the game is fun to play. Nobody who writes a "What If" or "Elseworlds" comic feels like they wasted their time just because the story they wrote isn't canon when it's over.

I agree, Razor. I'm just saying that its damn time for a canon game... with consequenses. Even if at the end of this game Raiden realizes that everyone, including himself, must die and this game is just a "last hoorah" thru MK history. Then the next game can have all new fighters and story, based around the tournament. :)

Well I would have liked to have a game where things "matter" too, but erasing 18 years of history is the worst possible thing they could do. Making it a "What If" is way better than tearing down things people love and alienating part of the fanbase.

And here's the thing: The fanbase has a habit of giving the developers mixed signals.

A huge number of people wanted a nostalgic revisit to the era of the old games. But every time that comes up, you then have people who say "But I've already played that story, I want something new and different", and another group of people who fear reboots and remakes because of Shaolin Monks and don't want anything else to retcon and ruin the canon they love.

I think a game where history is changed but then repaired at the end is the perfect middle ground between all three of those arguing groups.

And Armageddon does still have to be prevented, so even if Raiden finds a way to undo his bad changes, there will for certain be at least SOMETHING that sticks at the end.

I'm with ya, brother. I was stunned that Apep wasn't the final boss of Deception's Konquest. That would have been the perfect capper to a mixed (being generous here) experience.
