Goodbye to interactive arenas?
Goodbye to interactive arenas?
With MK going fully 2D, does this mean that the backdrops will become, well, just backdrops?
Now that the fighting will be just scrolling left and right, it seems that there may no longer be breakable barriers, walls or hazards during a fight.
Is everyone okay with that?

I'm totally fine with it.
As I mentioned in a previous similar thread: MK3 had multiple arenas. I'm sure if they wanted to they could make arenas where one can get uppercut into another, just not the whole dramatic falling together transitions you saw from Deception & MK vs DC.

Goodbye and good riddance. I never have to pray my opponent chooses a stage with death traps.

good news. Deathtraps and freefall sucked. Too easy to activate.

I didn't mind them but with the switch back to 2D they won't be there. They seemed like a replacement for Stage Fatalitys. I didn't mind the uppercut to another area like in MK3. If any of them make it I would be happy.

I'll take the transitions, for this game. If they Make another 3D game, fire Boon and let me do it, I'll invite the lot of ya and we'll show Mr Boon how its done.

Leave stage transitions to Dead or Alive and deathtraps to... never ever again? I'd sure like that, thank you.

Im ok with Bakcground Fatalities, But not during the match, leave it all deadpool/pit style.
Once i knocked myself into the slaughterhouse grinder because of a glitch when I was attacking, I could deal with it. Then in MKSM when i was trying to kill myself and feed the trees to face Noob Saibot and I couldnt?
lets just say I lost all interest.

Classic MK Fighting only please. kthxbai!
I would love to see more multi-tiered arenas. it's possible too, with MK3 you could uppercut people into other tiers, and there are other ways to do it too.
-Sideways transition, punch someone through a wall leading outside a building or something.
-Ground transition, in Tekken 6, in some stages you'd hit the grounds and you'd fall into an underground arena. Something like this would be feasible.
these aren't too in depth or original, but it could work, and it'd be cool to see.

I like some of the 3D arenas and their interactivity such as the Falling Cliffs and some of the Death Traps, but these arenas blow them out of the water by far IMO. I love the details and the awesome visual quality of these, and of course...the fact that they are awesome classic arenas is definitely a bonus.
I liked the whole idea of interactive arenas, and I believe if done right they would have really added to the experience, but the execution was not there in the last couple games. I would like to see it done again in the future; so long as it done right, but for this game I'm not going to miss it so much. Some transitions during the fights might be nice, and I am hoping for many stage fatalities.
Personally, I liked the deathtraps, though fatality-based deathtraps (like the collapseable arena, subway, etc) should only be made available in the final round of the match (or only for the winner of the first round, not available to the player who lost the first round).
It just seemed weird to knock your opponent off a cliff to his or her death midway through the first round and then to have him or her totally unscathe in round two.
But I loved smashing them through barriers and walls, down stairs or hills, into glass windows or hanging corpses. It made the arenas seem alive - with danger!
A long time ago, I think around the time of MKDA, Boon said that he wanted the MK arenas to be more than just portraits.
Midway did this successfully by incorporating deathtraps.
The next MK game going totally 2D seems that interactivity will no longer be available (this excludes stage fatalities, which I hope would be plentiful).
Don't get me wrong, I think the new arenas look awesome, but at the cost of interactivity.
We're back to fighting on picture portraits once more?

I hope they can add a stage fatality in the living forest ... I can remember back in the day with mk2 there was a rumour that this could be done and how I tried for hours on end to uppercut someone into the background but never got it right.

Well, in this particular aspect i'm a little skeptic. To me, deathtraps were good, but it always felt like it was too ridiculous to have your opponent thrown into a meat grinder during round 1, and then him/her returning for round 2 unscratched.
I mean, don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan of stage interactivity, but i'd rather have just the stage Fatalities, for finishing up your opponent, as a form of environmental "hazard" (fully replacing the deathtraps) at the end of the last round.
Also, multi tiered arenas may be possible, and if done right like in MK3, i welcome them at all costs, but if the MK team has to make a choice, i'd say to include destructible stage elements rather.
You know, little statues standing in the front or back plane of the stage, that are knocked over or shattered by a strike that eventually touched them during combat, for example.
Pretty self explanatory example here.
Notice at 1:40, the keg loaded with fish that is sliced in half by Galford's blade.
This is as close as we can get to "2D stage interactivity", in my opinion. Sill, if the MK team feels like including that and the stage transition uppercuts, i'm damn good with it! They've got my money!
