Well remember, Shujinko expected the pedestal to send them to the Elder Gods so they could guard them, and Onaga confirmed that's exactly what would've happened, if he'd had the amulet and put it in that empty circle groove on the pedestal.
I mean, they'd have been a LOT safer in the void with the gods than hidden among the mortals. There's really no logical reason to EVER let them be in the realms. That's just asking for trouble.
So I tend to think that when they killed the One Being and the Kamidogu shattered into 6 pieces, they got
lost in the realms, and the Elder Gods always wanted them back, but must not have been in much of a hurry about it after a few million years of nobody finding them and seeming safe.
