This has been bothering me for a while. Not going to lose any skin off my back, but I'm curious now. Technology seems to be really advanced in Mortal Kombat (cybernetic ninjas, realm transportation devices in the OIA, hell, even guns), but for some people, they seem to be oblivious to it.

I was going to use Sub-Zero as an example, but right after typing his name just now, it kind of made sense to me. I know Sub-Zero does not approve of making people into cyberninjas, but to what extent does this affect him, and furthermore, why subject himself to some crap? Case being, Sektor has a warship with advanced thingamabobs and doohickeys. That's fine, I can see that happening to him.

Sub-Zero's men only have flaming arrows and catapults. He's in the middle of antarctic, and his archers don't even have guns, and there are yetis walking around. Yikes.

Some characters would really jump the shark if they were introduced to technology, as if they were forced onto them; it'd be a disgrace to see Sub-Zero with a couple pistols and a 47, or Scorpion with a shotgun (say it all you nerds, "This...IS MY BOOMSTICK!!!" in a hamster voice), but it feels like some people don't even know what a light bulb is.

Which also brings up something else; Kano introduced advanced weaponry to Shao Kahn's army, but exactly what did he give them that made them so vicious? I'm pretty sure, but, if Kano would give up weapons to Shao Kahn's army, he might as well introduce other advances from Earthrealm. I mean, why not? I'm sure Shao Kahn has, more than once, sat in bed crying because he didn't finish the comic book before his candle blew out.

Just some food for thought.

Here is my opinion.

First... I'd say the message of MK is meant to be power of mind is stronger than technology! Most of the weaker characters rely on tougher weapons.

Am I right in thinking that Liu Kang's ability to shoot fire is so strong because of the flow of chi within him (I can't think where I read that), and he is the winner of 4 MKs- if that doesn't prove you don't need guns to be a champ what does? Sektor didn't work his mind or body to get his powers, he got them cos he was made a robot- ditto all his tekunin.

while shao kahn has a lot of brute force he also has a lot of mental power, ability to conjure up stuff like fire balls, that maybe some of his troops don't have. So Kano's weapons would be of use to his troops, that's why he would want them for them, they're less mentally strong than him.

But I think your answer is that the strongest warriors, Liu, Shao etc, don't need such gadgets cos their minds are so strong!

Second.... It's fair enough Scorpion doesn't use fancy gizmos as he is an undead spectre who's seen the elder gods and has all kinds of undead supernatural powers from the netherealm- ditto noob. that beats boom sticks!

third.... sub zero. He seems to me to lead such a life away from all normality. One of the things that make him a great character to me is his distance- geographical and emotional- he's a loner. He doesn't have a gang like black dragon, red dragon, special forces or white lotus with whom he's equal or even trying to be- he's way removed from frost or i'd think any of the lin kieu cos he's the boss!

it rings true to me that their weapons would be kind of ancient like bow and arrows cos i doubt with his personality out in arktika he is that close to or interested in modern times. Sub's whole history is learning the ways of a ninja, so it makes sense as boss he'd stay true to his roots.

well, that's what i think!

Also some groups are famous for shunning technology and living traditional lives. The samurai are a great example, they tried to cling to the sword while guns, discipline, and modernity became the way things went. The Lin Kuei most likely shun technology for the same reason.
Whether one thinks that makes them noble warriors or fools it does make for compelling characters
