Jade: Who the heck knows
Tanya: black

Kira: white

Sonya: white as the driven snow
Skarlet: white
Sheeva: Uhhh... ? Not asian whatever she is.
Frost: white
Nitara: white
Ashrah: white
Li Mei: possibly asian, given that name, though she doesn't look it.

Wrong.

Kitana: Edenian
Mileena: Half Edenian-half Tarkatan
Jade: Edenian
Tanya: Edenian
Kira: American/caucasian
Sareena: Outworld(ian)
Sonya: American/Caucasian
Skarlet: Probably Outworld
Sheeva: Shokan
Frost: Not sure
Nitara: Vampire
Ashrah: Demon
Li Mei: Outworld (Whatever her village name is)

Seeing as how most of these females don't originate from Earth, they can't be considered a race which only exist on earth.

And since the only Earthly creature we have are Caucasian, we are also lacking a hispanic, african, south pacific, middle eastern, blah blah blah female. We don't really need all of them.

why is it that EVERY thread someone makes about race some smartass has to come in acting like they're educating us on something we don't all know with "NO NO, THEY'RE EDEEEEEEEEEENIAN! LOLI'MSMARTERTHANU"

Thank you. We f***ing know they're Edenian. Yet they all bear the features and skin tones of familiar races of HUMAN BEINGS from Earth. Obviously non-human characters like Sheeva and Reptile excepted. So let's discuss them as such. Okay?
@ (Erik), I'm not asian, but I would like to see some asian females in the game. (I kinda have a thing for them).

This is related to the topic, maybe reversed, more of an unload, enjoy or skip. ; )
I actually have a problem with most American (especially white) characters in mortal kombat. There are determined people here, yes. I like to considered myself determined, I work hard. But the majority of Americans are not imagined of the level of cultures with such a culture rich of focus.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao are believable, being Shaolin Monks their whole life. But I a major problem with someone as unserious and terribly unfunny (humor's good when it's actually funny, you know when someone is the designated "funny guy", I just can't laugh at the forced attempts) I might add of Johnny Cage, Sonya and used to be Stryker until he's being portrayed as the Die Hard movies. I can "see" the worth in that case, the movie did a great job.
Myth helps, even if stretched. The myth of the marines being skilled and going through a physical hell has never been shown in the special forces. I'd love to see Jax and Sonya as an actual special force unit. The black suit (could be unmasked with a lot more green and usual stables) with green night googleson the side and coming in through the ceiling with ropes or something. I want to "see" they are skilled. I really like Sonya's second fatally, it's resourceful. I'd like further to see choke holds and things like elbows to throats from her and Jax.
With Johnny Cage, I'd love to see like Jean-Claude Van Damme's Bloodsport, Johnny Cage has been going to fighting tournaments his whole life, there's nothing wrong with being humorous, but I'd love to see he's actually capable to bust some heads without whoa'ing everything, get some blood on him I guess I'm saying.

Why are people so obsessed with races?

I think people just like to see themselves represented. This is going to get highly speculative, and probably only grace the surface of a deeper issue. But when you're an underrepresented minority in the media, and consistently shown images of people of other races, it may make one begin to feel as if their own kind is not "preferred" or "ideal."

Like it's probably nothing you've ever had to deal with (not you in specific) because when you turn on the television, you can see people you identify with. But I guess for the Asian community, they do not really have idols on television. There's Lucy Liu, that guy from LOST, William Hung, and ... that dude from the Hangover movies and Knocked Up? It's slim pickings.

People just want to have someone to look up to, that they can relate to, either subconsciously or explicitly.

It doesn't help when the few images you DO see of yourself in the industry that you love are mostly stereotypes and caricatures.

Which reminds me: Thank you very much for Cyrax, NRS, it's much appreciated.

Oh come one, everytime I see the word, "race" it finally comes to this...

Should it be stated as "ethnic group" then? I'm pretty sure that none of them was trying to be racist or discriminate any ethnic group.

Is like saying: "Smoke isn't white. He is Czech!!" when he is of white ethnic AND Czech. Come on people, nobody is being racist here. But if it is needed to call it ethnic instead of race, so be it I guess confused

Now on the topic, I too think that Jade (the Edenian one, from Edenia, not Earth, Edenia, yep, that) looks of midle easter or arabic ethnic. And most of his clothes on everygame resemble the style of exotic women from that zone too, so I guess she is from the part of Edenia where people has midle eastern ethnic...

About the asian females as how most people popularly think asians are (not so many people stop to realize how big and diverse Asia is, most just think that it's all China and Japan and that the other countries belong to somewhere else, not that I'm spotting anyone here of course, just a side note :P), I think that Li Mei belong to that ethnic group. Frost as others said should belong too even if she really doesn't have any distinctive trait.

About the comment who stated that Mileena could be spanish if from Europe zone because she had latin skin tone... I can tell you that spaniards doesn't look latin, and I see thousands of them everyday glasses I know from other european countries where people has much darker skin, but that skin tone isn't something that screams Spain IMO.

And in before people starts looking it the wrong way, please don't take it as "OMG he doesn't want to be compared to latins!!gtfo racist!!" I have latin friends, I'm just stating that an spaniard LOOKS different from a latin. Wich BTW is somehow funny as the word is originated from the cultures ocuppied by the roman empire but on our days hardly refers to people from Europe :P

Actually, given her music, skin tone, and wardrobe, JADE would most likely be closer to EASTERN INDIAN (on Earth) not "negroid" as someone put it...

Well, you kind of bring up a good point, but I'm more concerned about how good the character actually is as opposed to her racial/ethnic identity.

Jade is Asian. What continent does the Middle East belong again?

Not counting her being Edenian of course.

The Middle East encompasses North Africa and West Asia.
