I don't know if there is a post already on MK12 but what does everyone think we could or should expect in the next installment?

I think we could expect Mortal Kombat 12 to be a direct sequel to Mortal Kombat 11. At the same time, I also think that Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang and Kitana are going to be the main characters in Mortal Kombat 12. It will also be great if both Kenshi and Takeda are coming back in the sequel.

I feel that by wiping the slate clean and leaving Liu Kang, Kitana and Raiden as the only characters who currently still exist that they can do just about anything with it. Hopefully they'll take all the elements that worked from MK9, MKX and MK11 and come up with something fresh like each of those games were. Aside from staying away from revenants this time around, I'd like to see them start some new rivalries and possibly have characters turn out to be different in this new clean slate of the story line. It also brings up the option to bring in other characters(Liu Kang/Kitana children, etc). Whatever they do I hope they do not revisit the storylines from Deception and Armageddon, not unless those fit in somehow with the new story(or if there was a chapter or two in the past that would be fine). I hear a lot of people wanting a reboot of MK5, 6, 7 era...I do not share those feelings personally, although including parts of that would be ok.

The game has way too few 3D era characters.

Hopefully MK12 will move away from the SF characters and have a setting in Ancient Outworld with Onaga or in Ancient Edenia. They can do that with how they ended MK11.

When people play Mortal Kombat, what they are really looking for is a fighter that is relatively accessible, features some familiar faces and some brutal and cathartic violence. It's really hard to imagine a Mortal Kombat game without Raiden, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Kitana and Liu Kang at this point. Characters like Sonya, Jax, Johnny Cage and Kung Lao are also on that periphery. You can get away with swapping some out and putting new ones in as long as the gameplay works and everything "Mortal Kombat" is present.

I often tell myself that the next game is probably going to be something closer to the classic roster plus a few new characters and a few random ones for fan service, which seems logical, but they can really go whatever direction they want and surprise people. This could be something closer to a reset, which new technologies would allow to be presented as fresh, or it could be something of a complete sequel. Or, depending on what is possible, they could go through the entire roster of characters and let them in on a yay or nay basis. For example: Reptile is cool, so he's in; Stryker is not, so he's out.

Why is Sonya, of all people, on that periphery??

Fuck, a game without Sonya and Jax would be great, I don;t know why people like that dynamic anymore, it's terrible and I'm just tired of those 2.

They have to retire Sonya, Jax and Kano for the next game, and even Johnny (he'd be DLC). If we have another game where we have Sonya hunting the BD in the new Universe Liu Kang and Kitana create, I'll throw out the computer...:D :D

How about this for MK12 (Mick got my interest after moving this thread):

In the new universe Liu Kang and Kitana craft, the next game is set in ancient Edenia (10.000 years ago), in a land where King Jerrod and Queen Sindel rule (with Argus and Delia and Taven and Daegon as Protectors) and with Outworld enjoying prosperity under Onaga and with the other realms too: Seido, Chaosrealm, Vaeternus (Nitara), Osh-Tekk realm, Earthrealm (saurians this time), with a new Scorpion and a new Sub-Zero (cryomancer race of Outworld). The souls of the evil still go to the Netherrealm, as Liu and Kitana maintain the souls good-evil balance, even though they ensured that Shinnok and Shao Kahn would not evolve in this Universe.

And all the realms fight a tournament in peace to determine the best fighter to honor Liu Kang, their Elder God. He even sits in the middle chair.

But then some other shenanigans happen and Quan Chi from the Netherrealm poisons Onaga that together they can take down Liu Kang and make the Universe according to their will. Most good characters could be competing in the tournament: Baraka ancestor, King Jerrod (pre-Ermac, becomes Ermac during the story), Kintaro, young Jade, young Kitana, new Scorpion, Sub-Zero cryomancer from Onaga's Outworld, Raiden taking human form as an old man, Rain as Son of Argus, saurian Reptile from Earthrealm, Sindel, Smoke (enenra), Ashrah, Taven, Daegon, Fujin, Havik, Hotaru, Nitara from Vaeternus, Reiko, Sareena, Tanya, D'vorah, Kotal (or his father Kotal K'etz if he is too young), Skarlet. Mid-tournament Quan Chi and Onaga enact their plan and clone King Jerrod's heir mixing it with Netherrealm demon blood, thus creating Mileena, who Onaga empowers to the point where she becomes a Goddess thus erasing Elder Goddess Kitana from existance because she cannot exist as Goddess in 2 points in time simultaneously and having the new Mileena impersonate her, weakening Liu Kang.

Sounds fun? If anyone wants the boring human characters, they could have a time travel kombat pack of about 5 characters (Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Kenshi and a couple of the kombat kids) cause maybe Liu Kang pulls them from the initial timeline like he pulled Kitana and brings them to 10.000 years in the past because he needs the Cages god-slaying powers or something.

Fast forward at the end, Mileena knows love from the young Kitana kid this time and becomes good- becomes more than a crazed tarkatan like in the original timeline-, Onaga is the final villain who must be defeated (cause let's face it, we can't have him all bulky in the game and not fight him as a boss!!), Scorpion and Sub-Zero become enemies as destined (we've never actually seen a CGI video fight between them except for in MK Conquest; after that the cryomancer is given the chance by Quan Chi to become something more- a being of darkness leading the Netherrealm armies- he accepts or not, thus "Noob Saibot"), Quan Chi escapes yet again, the time displaced fighters bring their families with them 10.000 years in the past and have to live in Ancient Edenia with traditional style, without the technology of the future.

Personally, I think there’s two good ways they could go about this and one way I really don’t want to see.

Good way 1: Start with the time of the Great Kung Lao. Due to a new timeline and how long many non-Earthrealmers can live, the game could still have a wide variety of classic, 3d era, new era and even deeper cut characters. I think a roster like this could work:

Returning: Liu Kang, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Reptile, Kitana, Baraka, Mileena, Shao Khan, Rain, Khameleon, Fujin, Shinnok, Sareena, Reiko, Tanya, Bo Rai Cho, Li Mei, Nitara, Ashrah, Onaga, Skarlet

New: Great Kung Lao, Argus, Delia, Jerrod, King Gorbak, New cryomancer, new Shirai Ryu assassin,

MK DLC: Jade, Kotal, Havik, Cetrion, Ermac and Quan Chi

OR

You create a new timeline that simply involves Earth and Outworld and it’s set post-MKX. A few things remain the same. Shinnok was then defeated by someone. You start there, but you change virtually every character around and you show the results up until the present day, minus Kronika of course.

From here, I’d have the One Being as the main villain. Or a representative / embodiment of the will of the One Being. You create a roster from trilogy, 3D and modern eras plus five new characters, but again, many origins, alliances, alignments, etc are changed subtly or dramatically.

Maybe the deadly alliance was between Shao Khan and Shinnok. Maybe Kitana and Mileena grew to love one another as sisters. Maybe Edenia was never absorbed in to Outworld, maybe the cyber initiative never happened, maybe Kotal and Shao, along with Reiko both loyally serve Onaga, you get the idea.

OR

And this is the one I REALLY don’t want:

You retell MK1 - MK3 yet again, only with Liu Kang and Kitana who they are now and various changes, alterations etc ala MK9 ie another excuse to cram the trilogy era and only the trilogy era (with some exceptions) down our throats yet again so oldsters can get full on memberberries again.

Do. Not. Want.

I like the idea of Kitana and Liu Kang having a kid, quite possibly one that turns out dark for some reason. I wouldn't mind seeing certain characters come back entirely different from what we've known them to be.

To be honest. Can we be done with Quan Chi? Everyone has their favorite characters but, between the last two games everything has been changed to make Quan Chi responsible for way too much. I liked that Behan killed Sorpions family and clan. I liked that Kano was a black arms dealer with no allegiance whatsoever. I would like to see something from ancient times as well. Like, a kind of "Rise of Shao Khan". Where onaga is the villain and Shao Khan is sort of an ally. You could have the great Kung Lao be mentored by Lui Kang like Raiden mentored him. This would allow for actual fleshing out of mythos only hinted at. Deliah and Argos, Taven and Dagon, Blaze and others getting real character development. New lesser villains with their own agendas and not just member of the Outworld Mafia. I don't care really if you want to bring back old characters or start all new ones. I want quality storytelling, not cookie cutter characters or plot devices. Quan Chi is not the root of all evil. Stop, start fresh, new story new timeline and if you have subzero kill scorpions family and clan. Good! Stick with that! I like that Scorpion learned forgiveness and didn't kill Kuai Liang.

My idea for MK12 would be to have Shang Tsung be the absolute victor in MK11. He would use Kronika's hour glass and shape the timeline of events of MK1 to benefit him winning MK1. There would be a lot of things he'd change to benefit him over Earthrrealm. I'd introduce new fighters that would interact with some of the small returning ones. Fighters who didn't get much game time would be implemented as well as fighters from comics that looked interesting to see in an actual game. Some fighters would remain the same who are returning yet he'd mess with others timelines. Goro would be replaced by Kintaro in his new tournament too.

Shang Tsung defeats Kronika in MK11 and uses the power of the hourglass to manipulate the chain of events of the 1st Tournament. He travels back to MK1 and shapes the events of time to where Johnny Cage and Sonya are stuck in the future version of his timeline, yet Cassie Cage is in the 1st MK Tournament alone and she has already killed Kano prior to this tournament. Knowing how careless Goro was in the last tournament Shang Tsung decides this time that Kintaro would be his champion rather than Goro. Scorpion has still been slain by Sub-Zero and is still an undead specter this time being pursued not only by Bi Han as Sub-Zero along with his college Hydro, but a demon named Yu, a new fighter in the game, who claims to be the demon that granted him his powers. Kuai Liang is also still in the game only in Shang’s timeline, Kuai Liang is now Noob Saibot as his older brother Bi Han is still Sub-Zero. This is one of the many time altering effects Shang decides to do. Raiden in this timeline has fallen at the hands of Shang Tsung himself and so has Liu Kang. The new protector of Earthrealm is Fujin, and Liu Kang’s long-lost brother Chow Kang is now in his place. (Chow Kang is the named brother from Tobias’ original comic in Liu’s bio.) Thinking he isn’t as strong as Liu, Fujin sends Bo’Rai Cho to train him. Quan Chi’s assassins assist Shang Tsung in this tournament so Sareena, Jataaka and Kia are all there, but Quan Chi is monitoring the progress from the Netherrealm. A new Edenian named Raven is competing in place of Kitana and Jade. Mileena is also competing in this tournament. Shang likes to keep his creations very close and sadly Meat is also there. Some other new fighters are Grum, a six-armed like Shokan fighter seen in the Blood & Thunder comics as well as Nimbus Terrauffauxx who was a rumor back in MK1 for the Genesis. Other returning fighters would be Rain, Smoke, Tri-Borg and Tremor. Khameleon may even make an appearance in this story as in the reboot she makes a cameo so she plays some small role in the 1st tournament.

There are other possibilities with this but trying to think like Shang Tsung would be the driving force on how this new chain of events could take place. Ultimately you have to think if you were Shang and had the power to shape time and effect all those around you in any way you see fit....what would you do and how would you do it to benefit you the most? Who would Shang Tsung ultimately kill or get rid of? What would be the outcome of him doing so and forgetting about others? But really I think MK12 should involve Shang Tsung being the boss again.

I'm leaning towards a popular roster and i'm not saying it's fanservice roster. i don't see the point in rebooting. mk9 did this. mkx tweaked it and was batshit crazy fun. mk11 feels like a natural progression. characters from 11 not coming to 12 (imho): D'Vorah, Erron Black,Sonya Blade, either Jax or Jacqui, all revenants, Kollector, Kotal and Shao Kahn, Skarlett, and i'm really hesitant on this one but...Cetrion.

for new and returning i think we will see a character based on the protagonist from the new movie. Sareena, Lei Mei, Ashra, Havik, and other 3d era characters. not surprised to see quan chi or shinnok back Takeda, Cassie, Kenshi, Ermac, Rain, Mileena.

again just myho.

I don't know where they should take the overall story but they really, really need to give some characters a rest. The original 7 characters in particular seriiously need to take a break, as do a huge number of the MK2 and 3 characters. Not gonna happen with Lui Kang being time boss I suppose, but man I'm tired of them. Don't get me wrong, I like the majority of em but they're just spotlight hogs now. They have so many characters to choose from that could sorely use some development.

Words do not win wars. That is a tragedy.

I do actually like Quan Chi being one of the most intelligent villains in gaming history. MK can take pride with that. But they need to write him better than in MKX and they need to stop with women like Sonya, Cassie or Kitana humiliating grown men and powerful characters.

I do totally agree with you about DAEGON and TAVEN and their family. They are great

@Baraka407 why no Daegon in the first one?

I suppose it depends on when he actually wakes up in the new timeline. I know in the original, he woke up earlier than Taven, but was it a thousand years earlier? I mean, that’s more or less the time frame we’re looking at for a Great Kung Lao era tournament, no?

Either way, I’ll be curious to see who makes it in to the next game and what the overall context for the characters being involved (aka the setting and all around narrative and subplots) turns out to be.

This will likely be the second time the series reboots. What can they do now that they haven’t done already? They already did the “switch around a few things that happen from one character to another” as well as the drastic departure where a bunch of heroes die.

So what’s next? How do they make it feel new and fresh, with a unique story worth telling in a new, yet presumably still relatively familiar world, with a kind of timeline fans will accept and not just roll their eyes at or crap their pants over or simply discard because it’s not the original timeline most fans grew up on or they stop caring because they’ll think NRS will just retcon it or reboot again regardless?

In that sense, I do think NRS has a challenge ahead of them, but I do think there are ways to do it that at least improve the chances of a successful, well received story in MK12.

Great Kung Lao was 450-500 years ago. Won once and then lost 50 years later to Goro. Shang Tsung is very probably an Earthrealm warrior from 1.000 years ago (that's his age in his MK1 bio card) and he changed sides and won 9 for Shao Kahn before being stopped by the Great Kung Lao.

Daegon was probably awoken just shortly after being entombed, 10.000 years ago, as he killed the Protector God of Edenia, Argus, thus allowing Shao Kahn to conquer that realm. We're told in MKA's konquest that Shao Kahn could not defeat Edenia as long as Argus, Taven, Daegon and the dragons were there.

Also, Daegon looks much older and we know that 10.000 years is nothing for Edenians, as Kitana and Jade still look in their 20s or early 30s even 10.000 years later. So for Daegon to actually look "much older" than Taven (considering that he is the younger brother and looked younger than Taven, let's say 20ish when they were entombed), then he must have been awoken for at least 10.000 years.

Yes, the Red Dragon is that old. There has been a deity in real Earth called Dagon who people worshiped 5-6000 years ago in the Middle East. Raiden probably allowed him to stay in Earthrealm, perhaps he doesn't even know Daegon killed his father and he's just protecting the Son of Argus, the Red Dragon was not that bad as an organization and maybe even helped Earthrealm at times. They have a strict code of honour. The ones who broke from them, the Black Dragons, are just evil mercenaries.

Sure, they go totally evil by the 3D era in the original timeline, but that stuff with Hsu Hao blowing up the headquarters of the SF and Daegon going to Hell to get Shinnok's support has not happened in this timeline, so the worst thing they have done is unknown to Raiden. They supported the Civil War of Outworld for Mileena and Reiko, but that's not really a bad thing as far as neutrals are concerned. Mileena is de facto ruler by decree and Kotal is actually an usurper. They are freedom fighters for Edenia and Outworld. I think Raiden would like Kotal more than Mileena, but it's not his place to judge.

A really cool comic with Daegon and the Outworld/Edenia storyline can be found here:

The next mk should be Edenian based. Before it merged with outworld. Have it based on the time outworld was able to to merge both worlds. Edenia loses, makes way to a mortal Kombat game based on Outworld trying to conquer Earthrealm.....great fresh start.

I'd like them to keep the same faces (from MK11) consistent from now on but just touched up or ageing with every game. It will give the characters more of an identity (along with the bios of course).

Sonya is not one of my favorite characters or anything, but when people put in the latest Mortal Kombat, they're expecting to see her there. You can maybe keep her out a game or two -- they've done that before -- but at the end of the day they want their blonde military protagonist they can market. Either she or Cassie Cage is likely to be back in that role.

I totally get you being burnt out on them -- I repeat that I am not their biggest fan -- but they fill the tropes of what Mortal Kombat delivers pretty well.

Confession: Stryker was actually my favorite character as a kid, haha. I'm glad he got another chance, but I doubt even with that he is going to pop to the top of anyone's priority list.
