I finally unlocked Liu kang through the challenge event but I have some gripes with it.
The first 4 parts were easy, use bronze or silver tiered characters all easy requirements and difficulty is scaled such that my level 15 characters had no trouble getting through.
Then comes the final part, Dvorah must be on the team. Ok, so now I have to make a purchase to obtain Dvorah, i get a silver tiered dvorah since it was the cheapest option and set her on my team of a level 18 gold raiden from the last event and a mix up between gold Kung Jin and gold kenshi.
The problem comes that near the end of this section of the event the difficulty scale went up unreasonably. 26-28 then suddenly they were fused.
I was trying to play the other modes to level up my team but it was like all the time put into leveling up the team to catch up to the opponents team just to be out classes in the next fight and doing this over and over was to much of a chore and I had to give in and spend my soul coins to by pass the last 4 matches.

Btw, this isn't my first time at these types of games, I played the hell out of injustice until they updated it and made me loose all my characters, still upset about not being able to recover them. Also I played the wwe immortals so I know how to play it just feels like Mkx is more difficult.

Long story I know, but in the end what is everyone else's opinion on the mobile game in regards to leveling up characters. is there and easy way to do this?

I thought it was super easy got raiden and the other both in one day only. U should have a ton of gold cards by now. The silver decks give u random ones sometimes and if u save your souls u can just buy one. They give a ton of souls just for playing "online" I have a iii gold Johnny just from silvers. My main problem is I can't play anymore cus it keeps crashing.

There's a very slow grind in regards to actually leveling up, even though it only caps at 50. I tend to save level up cards until I hit level 45 because it's such a slow grind past 40.

The best course of action to strengthening characters is to fuse them. Fusing silver characters to stage VII (max fusion level) and having them be your lead is usually the best way of overpowering opponents until you can afford gold cards to fuse.

Be mindful there is a huge spike in power between a base gold card and a stage I gold card.

It shouldn't be hard. Then again, I've been playing from the start but... the amount of koins you get for doing stuff on the console and the souls from doing the daily missions should get you filled with cards. The trick is to not update your special attacks. Just spend money on card packs. Then, when you get a great team with a gold or two and a few stacked cards with characters that boost each others, spend your money on updating them and use this as your main team for towers.

Then, create other teams using your other cards and use them in Faction War to get money.

My main team is a twice stacked gold sonya, gold possessed Kenshi and three time stacked silver Kenshi. I'm in the last tower from the latest patch.
