It's a good idea in theory, but you have to remember that Midway aren't going to give people something for nothing.

If I buy MK7 and it's broken really badly, Midway could offer a downloadable patch. But why would they go to all that trouble for nothing? They've already taken my money because I bought the game, they don't need to go through all the hassle of creating updates and patches because there's nothing in it for them, it'd just be a waste of their time and resources and they'd be getting nothing out of it.

Unless we paid to download the patches.
If we paid to download them then i'm sure Midway would be happy to create patches and things of that nature for people because they'd be getting something out of it, obviously, more money.

This however raises a question a ethics, because Midway could deliberately churn out the most shit fighting game ever, and release a new patch for it every two weeks, forcing players to spend far more money than they should have to in order to play the game.

Say the patches cost 5 dollars each to download, well, after a dozen of these patches (that would be desperately needed in order to a play a game that's otherwise unplayable) that's an extra 60 bucks on top of the 50 bucks you bought the game for initially, meaning you just got scammed into paying Midway more than double the price you were initially told you were buying the game for. It's pretty questionable practice really, because Midway can fuck around all they want, give us the worst game ever, and actually be making MORE money than they would usually, all the while creating more problems that require more patches which have to be bought, which create more problems which require more patches which need to be bought, and so on ad infinitum, sucking our wallets dry and never really fixing anything.

Though, even if it wasn't deliberate, all Midway would have to do is be lazy like they were with MKD leaving so many things wrong with it, and we could be in the same situation. We shouldn't have to, for example, pay 80 dollars to play a game we bought for 50, especially when we're not told how bad the game is when we buy it, so we're not even being told how much extra we're going to be winding up paying. It's a cost we're not told about but forced to pay. Dodgey.

Personally i'd rather Midway didn't take the route of downloadable patches because it could cause other problems too in regards to playing online against people who didn't have the same patches as you, among other things. They should just put together a logical game with decent mechanics and test it extensively before releasing it to the public. That's all they should have to do. No hidden costs, no slacking off, no messing around with consumers.

I wouldn't mind an expansion pack possiblity for future MK games. This way it is a choice to add stuff to your game without it being required to enjoy. This you would have to pay for, but you don't have to get it. With the expansion pack you might be able to get new characters, more alt. outfits, more special moves, new arenas, etc but none of which are required to play the original game.

Remember patches are just that programming patches to cover-up/fix a problem that didn't get caught before a game/program was shipped out. They are not meant to be 'upgrades.' Since patches are fixes, they are almost always free because otherwise the company may have to give you your money back for the original game or heaven forbid get sued by the legions of angry customers and their hungry lawyers.

The only gaming upgrades I have experienced was through online RPG games in which the 'world' is being changed for a special event or something. For example, FFXI decorates its cities for X-mas but in order to do it (or remove those decorations) means an update/upgrade to your game is required. Of course I pay FFXI a little fee every month to be able to play and this fee pays for these upgrades as well as the paycheck of the so-called customer service they have. So unless the future MK games are online and going to charge you a fee every month, I don't expect this to happen.

Another reason why I recently quit XI, as well as having to clear a good 2-4 hours out of the day just to do something useful.
