So I started getting into MK9 again after playing MKX. I guess the thing I noticed that aged the most was the gampeplay, but with that aside...it's really not hard to see the difference in tone and atmosphere between the two.

Mortal Kombat X: Very minimalist interface with a "floaty" character select screen, dark ambient loading screen. Music was intense and captured the mood of the fights pretty well. Fatalities are downright gruesome (although the developers exaggerated them a bit in interviews pre-release). The story felt ACTUALLY cinematic, and in my opinion, will age well in the long run, I actually already felt a bit of nostalgia after going through Johnny's chapter again, reminds me when I was impressed by Deceptions intro. Regardless of ret-cons and parts of the comic they ignored, you gotta admit, it's a pretty good story for a fighting game.

Mortal Kombat 2011: Vibrant colors seen all throughout that sort of capture the style of the first three games. The gore was so over-the-top to the point of being ridiculous (sort of glad they toned the in-game bruises and scars seen on the characters). The fatalities are so goofy at times to the point of being laughable (couldn't help but laugh at the Street stage fatality). The story has a bit of twist on the original three stories which I thought was kinda clever, but it has some pretty stupid points going on in it, like Stryker beating Kintaro, or Goro being beat several times. The lines are totally cheesy, it's like a Saturday Morning Cartoon..just with more gore.

What do people want to see in MK11?...

Continue with the MKX style? Or go back to being more "vibrant" like MK9? Personally, I hope the next installation is a little bit of both. Keep the theatrics of MKX, but replace the dull and murky color tone and menu interface with something a little more "lively".

I hope for a more realistic version more akin to mkx than mk9 but some pops of color wouldn't go amiss.

I honestly like MKX's load screen a lot, but I do think when it comes to the atmosphere in the actual stages, MK9 is much better, but in terms of the menus, character select, load screen etc. I enjoy MKX's sleeker look.

But if you mean stages, MK9 all the way.

Pretty much this. MK9 nailed the art direction. MKX nailed presentation. If MK11 mixed the two, it would be damn near perfect.

MK9 was just WOW. I hated the colors. MKX is fine, but MK11 need's to be darker and more real like MK1 back in the day. Where when you hear Goro when you fight against the last endurance you'll fucking piss your pants.

I'd take MKX's dark atmosphere over MK9's any day of the week

Consistently memorable music in MK9 while MKX varied in terms of quality.

I rank MK 2011 a little bit lower than the outstanding MKX comic and much higher than MKX's story mode. I thought 4 out of the 12 chapters were perfect in MKX. Jax, Raiden and the first two chapters could not be any better.

MK 2011 for stages and fatalities, so MK9 overall.

Darker? I'm not seeing it.

I don't necessarily hate the stages in this game. The Kove, Dead Woods, and the Jensei Chamber are all great, but the fact that the pit(which is more or less ripped from MK2011) blows pretty much everything out of the water, it really says something. The Pit just pops out of your screen. It's alive and vibrant, something I just don't get from the washed out colors in MKX.

I'd take a mixture of both MK9 and X. Realistic but with just a bit more color and vibrance. Plus better music in my opinion.

In term of graphics and gameplay, I'll go with MKX, but everything else...MK9 wins ! I would much prefer the look and atmosphere of MK9...that was truly Mortal Kombat

Definately mkx. Looking back at mk9 it seems so amateurish and campy in terms of atmosphere. It makes too difficult to take it seriously. I prefer mk11 to go even darker than mkx. More like the reveal trailer of mkx, very black with atmospheric lighting creating a macabre feeling like something epic is going to happen.

MKX wasn't dark and it didn't have a dark atmosphere.
It was about some teenagers going around and kicking ass. The dialogue had soo many cliches, the lines were stupid to say the least. Johnny Cage was semi-fun in MK2011, but his jokes get old really fast. But Cassie Cage....she's just horrendous....a prime example of a joke character, she is the image of every stupid girl MIley Cyrus wannabe in this generation. And she also has jokes like her daddy sad And bad guys don't even have responses to them so that we can all wonder how smart this Cassie Cage offspring really is!!

The producers lied when they said MKX was going to be more serious and darker. It was a joke of a game. It wasn't anything like the Mortal Kombats I grew up with- from 1 to Armageddon. The story had awesome directions from the start and beautiful writing in the 3D era (though the gameplay kinda sucked). Now it's just.....teeny vomit

MK X all the way.
Better graphics, better stage design, better character design, photorealistic, etc.

MK9 was just a cartoonish gane with action figures in it.

"Darker? I'm not seeing it."

Man, those are fake! The brightness is increased :D
Sunny desert scenes, bright jungle, bright snow at night, yeah this is totally dark.

How exactly is 9 cartoonish/action figure like? DA-A looked like action figures.
9 n X both look fine.

Some stuff in X looks greyed or washed out, but there's still plenty of color.
Millena's leather pants aren't as black as they could be, contrast wise.
Reminds me of MKA Rain's grey/purplish pants. But that's only cause I'm used to the black ninja garb of the original trilogy. It's like the black going on a conventional tv, looks greyed/faded, but in the game's case, it's due to the material being like leather.
Plus the dusty desert, and sun fading makes it more "realistic" as I assume some people mean.

I'm colorblind (except when eat mushrooms :D) and I hate MK9's colors. I can't imagine how people who can see all the colors feel. Cartoon Network is more darker than MK9.

MKX graphics but MK9's color.

Seriously, MKX is so desaturated it's not even funny. Everything looks so drab and boring. It's not just the stages or character colors either. The lifebars are now white, there's a generic white flash when someone does an EX move, and when you hit or block there's a greyish impact mark. Even the blood got darker and doesn't have that "pop" it used to.

MK9 had so much color I took for granted.

Look Johnny's face, and tell me if it doesn't look cartoonish/action figures-ish.

I think the OP wasn't referring to colour, but to the overall atmosphere. This is what I'm getting from his post.

Prefer the MKX style much more. A lot more realistic and set a darker tone that separates MK from other fighting games IMO. Leave the saturated color schemes to Street Fighter which they are know for.

MKX totally. I think it's the best looking MK since MK2. Art direction has been a bit all over the place for me in between.

Most of the returning characters look their best. Kitana for example, finally looks like the badass assassin I've always wanted.

I personally love the slick interface and fonts. I think it has the best character select screen in the series, the animations totally makes it ( I wish it had better music to go with it however ). The interchangeable faction menus are an awesome little bonus, I fucking love the white lotus one with the candles and pouring rain on the characters. The Krypt, the towers ect. all look great too.

Injustice had a desaturation filter, MKX doesn't. That game looked drab I don't find MKX does. It has less colour yeah, but I see it as a more realistic use of it. I wouldn't be opposed to a bit more pops of colour however.

MKX has the potential to be in the top half of MK games overall. It's already there gameplay-wise. It's just lacking in content. I'm still baffled that Fujin wasn't playable from the start. No KP1 or KP2 was just mind-boggling. And they really needed more stages. The game started to feel more complete after Tremor (no guest characters in my games), but it still feels likes it missing some stuff. Hopefully Bo' and Tri-borg and the copied MK9 Pit (was hoping for a complete redesign, but it does look slightly different and still gorgeous) will further the satisfaction. The supposed future content has me clinging to hopes, but realistically, may have to wait several years until MK11, unless there's a possible Shaolin Monks 2 (please!) sequel in the meantime. Still waiting for that webseries (need that MK like all the time). Overall, MKX has a slightly better art direction for sure, but overall I was more satisfied with MK9 due to it's roster and arenas, and overall experience.

I think I prefer MKX, but would I really want more color in costumes/stages. I think Outworld Marketplace would be a far better stage with a slight Purple or Orange tinted sky. I still miss the overall mystical vibe of the stages, I don't mind any of the stages in MKX, but I just find them boring compared to the older games. They look great, but when I think about how amazing older stages would look in this game, it really shows. As we've seen with the Pit, it looks far better than almost any stage in MKX. Overall MKX looks way less cartoony and goofy than MK9, and I think I do like it more.

So, a mixture of MK9 and MKX for me. I appreciate the realistic aspects of MKX, but would like a little more color and mystic elements added back. Also, the select screen is hella boring, give us those awesome mini backgrounds for each character from MK1-4! I really loved those.
