IGN Posts Mortal Kombat 8 Comments From Ed Boon!

IGN Wii has posted yet another sit down with Mortal Kombat series creator, Ed Boon. This time, the focus is on the future of the Mortal Kombat series as IGN Wii questions Boon about the next game in the series, following MK Armageddon. In this brief posting, Boon mentions the future of Mortal Kombat's storyline and also it's gameplay mechanics, while confirming there will indeed be a continuation to the series after MK Armageddon:

"On the next game, we're going to start new, with a bunch of brand new characters, a whole new fighting system, a new presentation with the new graphics for the new consoles, as well as a new control scheme to take advantage of some of the new technology available. We thought it was a good time to close this chapter and open a new one with every single aspect of Mortal Kombat -- It's going to be brand new."

IGN also hints that there will be more information about MK Armageddon posted tomorrow, so stay tuned for that development. To read the complete update on the site, click here.

I'm hoping it will revamp the series. I enjoyed the last two games, and Armageddon looks freakin' sweet, but a lot of people I know didn't care for them. Hopefully this will reinvent Mortal Kombat as a top contender for fighting game supremacy.

Humm. theirs not a whole lot they could do that would make me not buy MK8. But starting 100% New? I can't think of one case game/film wise wear starting over completly has suceeded. As an example i would use Halloween III. Not a bad film by any means. But something %100 diff with the same old name dosent rub people right. Theirs gonna half to be some old stuff in it.

Go back to 2D, of course with today's awesome 2D graphics though (ala KOF XI), and release it in arcades to contend with KOF and SF. I miss MK being a dominant fighting game in the arcades.

I really hope they don't screw up MKA, since this is the last shot we'll have to play most of our favorite characters.

But I do think it's time for MK to start fresh. I'm already looking forward to MK8.

I agree. I think a fresh, new start will be great for the series. I'm eager to see what's going to happen for the next gen.

MK is a style of make a fighting game: Blood, Fatalitys, Great Storyline, Cool Characters, Dark Stages and Good Music...

I believe they learned much with making 3d mk games.
They screw it with DA, it got much much better with Deception,shaolin monks was great and I see that Armageddon is very promising. I think the next mk will kick some ass!

Graphics: I hope that they can give us Resident Evil 5/ Devil May Cry 4/ Virtua Fighter 5 type graphics and nothing less... Also cloth ripping, and effects where characters look wet when they are exposed to rain/water and so on.

Fighting engine:. Hopefully they've learnt all they can learn from all the 3D mks to make the ultimate fighting engine for next gen. I hope that retain the 1 martial art, 1 weapon style + powers for each characters. MK is the only game where all the styles are mixed like this... which is awesome! And who could forget fatalities. Create a fatality can return but there should be a bigger amount of unique fatalities per character.

Chracters: I would like to see characters that give an impact and are instantly likeable with rich storyline potential. Be it the New Goodie Two Shoes or the Neutral Badass Antiheroes or even the Evil Mofos.

Thanks for the update Crow. This is great news indeed. I assume MK8 will come out around Q4, 2008. They can take all the dev time they need. As long as they dont rush the game and take their time to make sher the game rocks. Im eager to find out what ideas they have for this "whole new fighting system", and it should be interesting to find out who the "bunch of new characters" are. Also, this game should truly look like a next-gen fighting game in terms of graphics if they use the Unreal 3 Engine.

Yeah right. If you honestly think they won't start bringing back characters when fans bitch about how the new ones suck (which they will), then, well, you honestly haven't been playing MK long.

I know that the cloth ripping can't be available with the actual console generation (PS2/NGC/Xbox), so I think that this will be one of the first new features in the new generation

This is probably the main "cancer" in the MK fanbase... you want a game based in ninjas? Play Dead or Alive...
