I quite like Kung Jin, even if he does need a bit more character development. I think a new Shaolin is a good idea, and I like his moveset and appearance. I'm totally indifferent to the fact he's gay; it really wasn't necessary, but if NRS felt a gay character would seem 'progressive' then okay.

As for Jacqui, I agree with your criticism. I dislike the character and do not see a reason Jax needed a daughter. We already have three new next-gen characters.

I agree about Jacqui but I quite like Kung Jin. He had the same ego problems as his uncle but the difference is he overcame them and didn't let it get the best of him and thus didn't get killed because of it. I quite liked it.

I am not the biggest Jacqui fan myself not that I completely hate her or anything though she has some good moves but I think Kung Jin is a pretty cool kombatant and a better tier than Jacqui is by far.

The only problem I have with Jacqui is that she's the most bland of the newcomers imo. I don't like that she is so similar to her father in design that they both have metallic shit on their arms and wrists. It annoys me. I would have much preferred her to be a kickboxer like what was alluded to in the early days of the comic.

I love MKX, imo it's the best game in the series.

I like all the newcomers myself.

Jacqui's biggest problem to me is her uniforms are a bit too standard. But it's refreshing to see a more tomboy design in MK. It just needs a bit more flair, more of a hook.

I love the gauntlets imo, that's her thing, and they have different enough properties to Jax's.
If she returns, they should push the concept even further...maybe turn her into the robotics engineer early idea they had for Cassie. Maybe not as extreme, but the arm(s) could do all sorts of crazy shit, a bit like Dc's cyborg. The concept has lots of potential.

The point of the next generation character was to carry on some cool, old, classic concepts, and twist them into something fresh and kinda original.
Cassie has the military technology of her mother and the shadow powers of her father, Takeda's bladed whips are an evolution of Kenshi's Sento and Scorpion rope dart.Kung Jin somewhat has the bo staff from Bo' Rai Cho and the "specific weapon" concept taken from Kung Lao's hat.
Jacqui has enhanced arms, not prosthetics like her daddy.

In the end none of the sons and daughters are even remotely close to their parents in terms of gameplay. That's the most important thing and that's why I believe we could have Johnny, Sonya and Cassie in the same game without feeling redundant.

When I first picked up the game for some reason one of the first characters i tried was Jacqui and she is VERY different to Jax in terms of gameplay, and there's no reason not to have both, especially as it might be that Jax will not appear in the next instalment (spoiler alert) if certain endings are to be believed.

As for Kung Jin, I like that his blunt personality comes across as offputting, because that's how some people are in real life. He doesn't mean any offence, but sometimes people like that can make others a bit uncomfortable (until you get to know them).
The fact that he is a reformed thief tells you that he hasn't always been a goody-goody, and has a dark side and pride to struggle with. THAT'S GOOD - that's character backstory and development!

Then there's the whole gay issue. It really doesn't matter does it? The writers were obviously apprehensive about having him say it outright, because compared to the Sub-Zero chapter where the Grandmaster himself hammers home the point of who everyone is so there's absolutely no doubt and made it so obvious even the dog understood who was related to whom, that one line was downright subtle to the point of obscurity. (So much so that even me and my gay lover didn't pick up on it.) I'm more concerned about the fact that one of his variations is a carbon copy of Green Arrow, and that he is the only representative of the White Lotus without any sign or mention of Kai.

The whole "gay" argument was pure genius from NRS.
At first I didn't get it.Raiden basically tells Kung Jin to accept himself and he will accepted by the shaolin. "No matter who your heart desires" simply implies love' both platonic or sexual.

Kung Jin was afraid to join the shaolin because:
1) he is a thief and he loves it
Or
2) he loives someone, maybe a girl, but it goes against the principles of chastity of the shaolin.

Then the whole gay thing comes out and Don Cianciolo caught the ball mid air, "We are glad that someone got that reference".

The way Kung Jin spoke is so ambigous and deceptive that his words could be misinterpreted too easily.

You people are weird. There is nothing to loath about Jacqui or Kung Jin they are fine sound characters for now who just need years to pile on actual story. Same with every new character in the game. Were their designs lame? Oh absolutely, but what character outside of a handful didn't have horrendous bare bones designs in this game?

The only character I can see people having a logical problem with is Kung Jin but that's only because the plot demands he be an impulsive asshole at the beginning. Once he is no longer needed to instigate fights and move the plot forward he suddenly becomes an actual patient monk. Did it seriously bug no one how Kung Jin becomes a completely different character once he beats Kotal? So...I don't know could you people just not let the first couple minutes in chapter 2 go?

Yes, but in this case Ed & co couldn'r blame anyone else but themselves.
I'm not saying that EVERY NRS decision is pure gold, but their average is better than mkonline.
In December people complained how colorful and cartoonish MK9, in January the same people are complaining about MK X dark, gritty and realistic design. Ugh.

Well that just comes down to opinions, no one is right or wrong in that regard. It's just personal taste. As far as MKO goes, it's a forum.... everybody is gonna have an opinion on something and most are going to think their way is the right way. Such is the case with any forum. However, there have been plenty of great ideas here in the past and plenty recently as well. But like with everything in life, you have to sift through the shit to find the gold.

As far as design goes though, in my opinion, I didn't like how colorful everything was in MK9 because, to me, the best designs for an MK game were when they went very dark (MKII, Deception and MKX being prime examples of really good art direction).

I'm with you here. I think the game is great. Haven't been able to play it as much as I wanted because it's just annoying to play on my PC and no way I would actually buy a PS4 just for one game. From what I've played though, gameplay is solid. Character design is some of the best in the series, with an exception here or there (Ermac). In my opinion the roster is the best an MK game has ever had besides MK Trilogy and MK9. There was a character or two that I wish made it still (DLC helps because we're kind of getting Cyrax now), but overall, not everyone can be happy. I actually like all of the new characters except Ferra/Torr and hope to see most of them return in future games. I'll maintain that the story, while still not perfect, was a big step up from MK9's. I'd say the fact that it's a video game and there needs to be constant fighting between scenes really limits it. Would be cool if NRS made their own CGI movies to tell the story of Mortal Kombat.

Most of what irritates me about the game comes from outside the game itself. DLC, where the characters most demanded by fans that didn't make the final cut have a chance to make it in the game. And exactly two of them did. Fans of the Cyborgs should be happy because we're getting a 3 in one with them. And Tanya, everyone's favorite post- MK3 babe is back as well. Other than that, we get an obscure long-forgotten and irrelevant character Tremor, that literally tens of fans desired, a whole butt ton of horror characters, because we would all much rather have them than Fujin or Kai or Sareena or Li Mei. Then there's Bo Rai Cho, which is... actually kinda cool.

MKX is a fantastic entry in the series. I'd actually say it's the best MK. That doesn't mean it's been my favorite throughout its lifespan, but it is the best.

But after playing the game, then taking a break, then playing it again repeatedly, I've come to the conclusion that MKX may actually be my favorite MK. When I look at the pros and cons, the pros are overwhelmingly dominate. Sure, I was irked at a couple of the roster choices up front, and I was beyond salty when they launched with the same netcode. But on the other hand, my immediate main character was a NEW character. That has never happened since MK1 when everyone was new. Not only that, but there were/are several new characters that I not only like, but intend to learn and play at a competent level. Takeda, Erron Black, Kung Jin, and Kotal Kahn are all fantastic characters that I hope remain with the franchise moving forward. Dvorah and FerraTorr are no slouches either.

On top of that several character look better than they ever have, in my opinion. Sub-Zero's Grandmaster skin and Scorpion's Primary are both the best those characters have looked since MK2. I actually feel that a lot of characters look like a nice evolution of MK2's art style. Kung Lao is a great example. His thinner, more lithe appearance has finally come back and he looks great in MKX. Same for Liu Kang and Raiden as well. I think Goro actually takes the prize though. He's looked like shit after MK1, but now he finally has a 3D appearance that meets or exceeds his 2D presence. Well done, NRS.

I could go on about how great the Variation system is or how sick a lot of the stages look (White Lotus, the Kove, Lin Kuei temple, and Jensei Chamber were instant classics for me.) Brutalities are a blast and look like Fatalities from back in the day, and Faction Kills are a ton of fun. And with this game's netcode now getting the attention it needs, I feel very comfortable in saying that MKX is my favorite MK, beating out both MK2 and Shaolin Monks. There are still cons, but they can't overshadow the pros this time. Well done, NRS.

Now make Nightwing awesome in Injustice 2.

Dude, you're so full of shit when you say that Ferra/Torr isn't any better than the likes of Meat, Kobra, etc. There's nothing wrong with Ferra/Torr except the fact that the writers clearly under-utilized them in the story. That's the writers fault, not that of the character, and you're smart enough to know that.

No OP, you aren't the only on left.

I still love the friggin' sh*t out of this game, and I will continue to do so after Tri-borg, Bo, Alien and the pit are added to my game. I will continue to do so up until the release date of MKXI, just as I was playing MK9 at least once a week, every week, from the time it was released up until the the very night of MKX's release. I did a replay of story mode and I timed it perfectly to reach the end, and go to the midnight release for MKX.

MKO is a terrible example to use to measure this game's popularity. The fans are are ultra-passionate, and that usually means there's far more nitpicking, negativity and widespread complaining than there is positivity about the game...it's just the M.O. of super fans.

You aren't alone. Even if it seems like no one here likes it, or like everyone has to dump on other people who say they still enjoy it, there are 500 people out there who love it for every one here that hates it or complains about it.

Granted, complaining about the game doesn't mean you hate it, but there is nothing positive to say about it anymore. The people on this site are over it, so all that is left is to nitpick and complain about what could've been rather than what we got. Some complaints are valid (roster, # of arenas, story) while others are petty (pre-fight dialog, voice acting, menu design).

The MKXL trailer seems to have stirred up hype, so let's see what happens when it drops.
