I saw this tweet. I sure do hope so. Chess Kombat this time around could be really really cool. Plus it would be fun to play solo, locally, or online. Really hope it comes back.

or maybe...wait for it...he really liked that artwork, thought it was funny and decided to post it and it has nothing to do with MKX.
Nah, that'd be to obvious; it must be a clue.

Obviously it is NOT a direct hint to MKX.
..But since this is a discussion board and a place to speculate while waiting for the game to come out..
..i see no harm in using boons tweets as conversation starters.
I think a lot of people on here need to understand that fact.

well said. And the fact that Ed Boon is the creative director of Mortal Kombat, and that the tweet is comming directly from himself makes it a good start for a new thread.
There's a "Ed Boon tweets" sticky thread for this kind of stuff but whatever. Boon has already answered this question in interviews and NRS isn't going to include the campy mini-games anymore as they're trying to be more serious with current MK games.

Chess Kombat can be extremely "serious". All it is, is essentially, fire emblem (i hope people have played the game to understand my point) You move soldiers on a playing field and instead of having turn based attacks it goes into a 1 round MK match.
The "soldiers" are of the MK roster that you pick and place on the playfield (chessboard) and your ultimate goal is protecting your "king" and destroying the other players "king"
Extremely simple to understand, and an all around bad ass, SERIOUS mini game.

but chess was actually good as it was built entirely around the fighting game mechanics. puzzle and motor kombat were inane distractions but chess could easily have a place in the new game.

I really hope not.
It was something I just really didn't care for. I don't mind mini games but just not Chess Kombat.

Is it just me who thinks they shouldn't waste time and resources on these silly mini games and instead spend it on balancing gameplay, fixing netcode, and expanding story? I mean, release these mini games as free DLC post-release, for the Android and iOS systems, or as stand alone games or something.

Sure hope not. That was the crappiest mini-game ever. Puzzle Kombat is needed more and the best mini-game ever.

Given the strategic approach to gameplay already represented in MKX by having Variations; I think Chess Kombat would be a nice compliment to that theme.
I keep thinking about the possibilities. The vision I am having for chess kombat right now could compile a stand a lone game in itself.
Kind of want to type it all out but I am at work

Chess kombat was stupid as fuck, same with mini mk go karts and mk tetris. Such a waste of time. People get so carried away with wanting little extra's from MK because they're too lazy to learn a fighting game and therefore get bored of the game after a week or two because they suck at it and have run out of pretty costumes and endings to look at.

Chess Kombat was better than a lot of other of Midway's "distractions."
With that said, If MKX ships with Chess Kombat, and the netcode is still mediocre, I would facepalm so hard that I wouldn't regain consciousness until MKX: Komplete Edition ships.
Online play is so much more important than those "distractions" of old. That's where a ton of focus should be going. MKX can have both "distractions" and good netcode, but if it lacks the latter while having the former people are going to rip NRS to shreds.

NRS is a big team and the netcode man is not the same as the balance man or the man who would be making an extra mode like chess kombat

lol at the people freaking out about how chess kombat sucked. I could see not liking the puzzle or motor kart stuff but chess actually had fights and as people have said is great for solo or multiplayer. Would love if they had it in X.

Quoted for truth...no matter how futile it may be.
So I get that this thread is one part "let's fantasize about chess kombat" and one part "is this a real possibility to be in MKX?". It's the latter I was addressing in that Ed verbally shot down the ideas of mini-game modes like Chess Kombat, Kombat Kart, etc. The most that'll be in are the sort of mini-game objective stuff you saw in the Challenge Tower and S.T.A.R Labs.

100% with you on that. Castlevania Lords of Shadow had a chess minigame which was as serious and gory as the rest of the game.
Yes it added some fun but it still was in character with the game. MK could definitely do that too. I loved Chess Kombat as it was. Imagine if they did something as awesome..

I liked Chess Kombat. I hated that it didn't play like Chess. The whole fighting mechanic was a nice touch though. I would play Chess Kombat forever if this returns and plays like how Chess plays.
