We could have a 30 second segment in the middle of each show. "Reasons why Nightwolf should be Canadian."

Oh I'm sure a sequel will be easy enough to come up with once WB requests one when the sales figures and reviews come flooding in with the way things seem to be going thus far.

Y'know, I looked it up, and I'm pretty sure the Lakota tribe, which MK9 attributed him to, is located in the general area of North & South Dakota.

So...almost Canada but not quite.

OK, then let's say the map got a little shuffled around during the original MK3 merger/de-merger and now South Dakota is in Canada from post-MK3 on. You guys get part of Manitoba or something. Bam, fair trade.

Or that he was born in Canada and moved back to his homeland. Seriously, I'll take it. I'm that desperate. Canada never gets shit for fighting game characters. Maxima in KOF is the only halfway cool one.

Nobody bring up Sasquatch from Darkstalkers. I'm not even kidding.

I think Cassie Cage will end up being played by a lot of people, and I easily see her being a top-tier character with her projectile and flip kick. As a character, I'm glad that she seems to be more like Johnny, and she might be someone I'll like for the most part. I just hope that her model will be sorted out before the game's release.

For Ferra/Torr, I see them being a mischief-making duo. They could be fun to play despite not having special powers. I think that Vicious is what I'll use the most for the zoning aspect even though all three variations seem to ultimately focus on rushdown.

I'm interested in D'Vorah but I don't feel that much excitement for her either. It's hard to explain, but I want to keep an open mind. She could be formidable gameplay-wise.

Kotal Kahn is still my favorite new character so far, and I think the voice acting will help solidify his awesomeness. I'm not sure how much I'll play as him as he seems to be more centered around patience.

Regarding character ratios, it makes sense that this game has about 10 new characters to give that sense of newness, paving the way for a new generation of characters. If the story was different, I'd say maybe 5 new characters would work.

Baraka is one of those characters that's visually appealing and pretty fun to play. As a character, I don't see him becoming too particularly interesting, and I don't really care much for the Tarkatans anyway.

Isn't there already a Native Canadian character with Wolf from Virtua Fighter? I still can't get over his face...-_-

In retrospect, I should have said "Jack of all Lumbers", that's a much better Canada pun.

No, I don't know why you guys keep me around either. Must be my shining personality.

In all seriousness, I like to think I dabble in a little bit of everything. I'm no high-level gameplay expert, nor do I follow the tourney scene much, but I get along with basic gameplay analysis. I don't have every bit of lore memorized the way Razor does, but I have a more than comprehensive knowledge of the plot. I'm also pretty big on the series' history and art direction. There's few areas where I don't have something to say.

It probably really does help that I'm a lunatic, though.

Not everyone has to have a "specialty". Lol

You and I are very similar in what we offer in terms of discussion. We both have been here long enough to have an understanding of everything, every character, every stage, gameplay elements, other MK media, and a general understanding of competitive play and in-depth lore. The common link here is we've all been here plenty long enough to have an opinion and a say in just about everything.

It's also about personality. That's a key component. A monotone dull boring voice, or lack of sense of humor, isn't going to be fun to listen to. Heh I think you and I offer that silliness.

Does Wolverine in MvC count as a Canadian fighting game character?

Also, I'd prolly main an Eskimo character.

Any brief thoughts or questions on Kabal?

He'll be the retrospective character we cover on Episode 3. We'll be recording in about 3 hours, so anything posted here will be considered for the show. Thanks.

Kabal is a weird character because I don't think NRS really knows what to do with him. In MK3 he was a former Black Dragon, in MKD he was second in command or he reformed the black dragon with Kira and Kobra. I think, in some respects, he's a lot like Baraka in the sense that he's a character that survives more on how he plays and how he looks more than what his story is.. And, just like Baraka he's a character that has a very signature look. The mask/respirator combo, the trenchcoat, the hook swords. It's all very much him and his alone. I feel like every new version of the character added something cool, but then took it something else away. In MK3 he was disfigured for treason against the Black Dragon and left to die but survived via his mask, so we already had a bit of empathy. In MKD he has a cool trench coat finally, but throws his old vendetta out the window. And in MK9 he's a reformed Black Dragon (good) he's got a trench coat (great) but he gets his scars because he just happens to be standing in front of Kintaro's flame breath. (Not as good.) His little bro moment with Kano was kind of nice though. Shows that there might still be at least a bit of comradary between the two of them.

His fatalities have never been all that great, but I think most of that has to do with the tech not being up to snuff with what they wanted to do. The disemboweling from MK9 comes to mind in that regard. I personally always wanted to see a fatality where he spin dashes past the opponent and then uses the gas blasts to blow away chunks of the character mid spin in rapid succession.

Great voice for the character in MK9 too, as a random aside.

I got a question for you to discuss... do you think he'll be somehow related to Kano (while being a revenant of course) or his hypothetical appearence in story mode will be limited to some small, background cameos? Because maybe the Kano-Quan Chi alliance that was mentioned in QC's reveal video has something to do with Kabal.

But I'm not sure I can go full Red Lantern out loud the way I can in text. This voice doesn't have enough bass to do "raging asshole" and be taken seriously any more than people could take Eric Foreman seriously as Venom...and if I DO tap into that anger, I'm not sure I can shut it off and go back to pleasant chitchat for the rest of the ep without the transition being a lot of awkward silence.

Jesus. You realize this is not a normal way to react to a video game, right? Gotta admit though it would be kinda fun to see this come out in the podcast. The know the old cliché about the car wreck.

I was of course exaggerating.

I've never been physically violent in my life...except for that time I beaned my college roommate in the skull with a controller after he beat me in Halo like 10 times in a row... wink

Awesome episode, I was laughing pretty hard at the Ferra stabbing their opponent in the eyes and riding them like Torr, and the Jarek humming.

I really like this podcast so far and I feel like I know you guys a bit better because of it. Through text I can't quite get your personalities, but it really shows in this cast. Good shit guys, and keep it up. Looking forward to the next ep

I'm really digging these podcasts. It's great to hear talk about MK from people who actually know and care about MK.

I don't know why, but Razor's voice vaguely reminds me of Ron Howard from Arrested Development.

We always record on Wednesday nights, so on the show's own channel, you can usually expect it up sometime Thursday.

Mick probably just doesn't want to release them too close to one another so people have time to see each one, since the MKO debut had a bit of a late start (we had Episode 2 done when he put up Ep. 1.)

Another great episode guys. Baraka is one my favorite characters as well guys but yeah storymode screwed him I hope his story is better this time if he returns. My favorite Baraka Fatality is the spinning part where he slices the opponent into many pieces in MK9.grin

I do miss when Baraka had metal teeth. If he was born with swords in his arms, then why not a face full of steak knives?

Up until MK9, I was fine with Baraka's place in the MK hierarchy. Sure, he always plays henchman to a stronger villain -- but he is also the alpha dog of a thousands-strong pack of hellish monsters bred only to fight. He is the most brutal and vicious Tarkatan of them all, and considering that he must face challenges to his leadership on a pretty consistent basis, the fact that he has retained his position for so long really does seem to make him distinctive. And considering that loyalty to a master is characteristic of his race, it seems fine that he always fills this role -- although in his character endings, he has never been shy about turning on his allies if it suits him. He's the worst of the worst as far as henchmen go, he's a little unstable, and he's fucking scary. MK2 and MKD gave him a very strong showing.

The problem is that MK9 made him appear generally worthless, since he had no apparent clout or reputation for exceptional savagery and could never win a fight. That doesn't speak well for the Tarkatan leader, and speaks especially less for the rest of his race. The horror and intimidation factors are completely lost. Worse, the Challenge Tower introduces a "Tarkatan General" who challenges Baraka's rule, and the General looks far more intimidating and visually interesting. We wonder, now, what is it about Baraka that makes him so special, when we did know in the past. Baraka had a good run, but MK9 kind of took a piss on him.
