Thank you! Some confirmation. Nothing about him comes off in anyway similar to Shao Kahn, other than just the name. I'm interested to hear about his origins though.

Yeah I posted this in the Kotal Kahn loading screen thread earlier today. I figured that was the appropriate place for it.

The leak/visit that has been circling around stated this also

That's cool, except that it's not like Ed is opposed to misleading people during the hype phase for each game. Come on folks. We've all taken our jabs here and there about various things in MK's story, but no one at NRS is balls to the wall stupid enough to introduce a new character who shares a name with the series' most iconic villain and then have no relation between them.

I think he may be in some way. I mean think about it, out of all the random names they could have given this guy, yet they managed to approve of this guy's last name being the same. Boon is definitely trying to play his usual games.

I think he has some sort of connection to Shao Kahn, but not blood-related.

Looks like you're assuming Kahn is a last name.
And how is having Kotal Kahn not be related to Shao Kahn a stupider choice than having him be related to Shao Kahn? I can say that making Kotal Kahn related to Shao Kahn makes MK's world smaller.

I think if he is NOT related to Shao Kahn, NRS will change his name. Much like they did with Hsu Hao in Mk5 (who was originally named Kublai Kahn). I think KotaL's name should have been simply "Aztek"

Everybody keeps bringing Hsu Hao up, but if Kotal Kahn's name wasn't finalized yet, I don't think he would have been one of the first characters to be shown off. I could see it being changed, but I think it will stay.
And "Aztek" would have been a horribly unoriginal name. Might as well name him "Blue Man" or something.

Like someone said, seems Khan isnt a last name at all and is like "Sultan" in MK

That sounds horrible. Let alone unoriginal.

Explain.
I think the Title Theory makes the most sense. Esp if there is in fact NO relation. Maybe it means something like "WarLord" in the MKU.
I Know "Aztek" Sux, it was the 1st thing that came to mind. LoL. I feel "KotaL Kahn" is just as unoriginal tho. I rather my video game characters have clever codenames versus made-up "real" names.

Perhaps it could be instead that the "Kahns" are race of godlike beings in the MK universe, Shao being the most powerful but others like Kotal lurking in the shadows now coming into the open to fill the power vacuum left by Shao Kahns destruction. Just a theory.
Well Kahn was an adviser to Onaga or some such thing and poisoned him and took position as ruler of Outworld. Maybe Kahn's are people/beings that have usurped someone from a position of power or something. Or maybe gods who do it.

So if Kahn is in fact a title could that possible mean that Kotal Kahn is the new ruler of Outworld?
