I read many ppl complaining about the roster etc. I agree about the roster, but its not all that buggs me. Especially if youre a MK fan for a long time and really digging the lore of MK.

I have seen threads like this game is dead or how to hype MKX etc. Besides the story reboot/ direction the game defenitly lacks some stuff that "i dont know why" is not mentioned on the forums. Especially on MKO. since its so heavy on the lore. Maybe long time fans have left the commuinity, dont care anymore or the unconsious mind may feel something is missing but cant point out what exactley is missing or just dont give a sh*t. I guess the last may not be the case as were here on MKO.

MK is a big part of me, i digg the series since i was a kid. And now that Mortal Kombat is in the hands of WB, there is a really big chance that some classic/ solid MK elements wont ever make it again.

I will post a link of a video, this guy discusses some good points. I dont care about the guy, i just share some solid points that he makes out. Even if you dont like him, he is right on some stuff.

What elements do you think won't make it into MK again? I don't get this whole thing that people have with WB...it's because of WB that we still have Mortal Kombat at all. That piece of crap company Midway was running all of their franchises into the ground. They were arcade kings back in the 80's and early 90's, but they had no idea how to market and expand to home consoles. Mortal Kombat was one of the franchises that suffered the most...the 3d era of Mortal Kombat was absolutely terrible because the dev team was always rushed. Deadly Alliance could've been the start of a new era for the series, and instead it was an incomplete, clunky mess.

The WB buyout was the best thing that happened to the franchise. The dev team was allowed to form their own studio. They have a HUGE budget now. They have TIME to work on the game. They have a parent company that wants to see them succeed and allows them time to develop, rather than a company that puts pressure on them to get a game out the door with less than 10 months of development.

As for this site, you were probably correct when you assumed that most of the veteran players have simply moved on. I mean, let's face it - those of us legacy fans that were pumping quarters into Mortal Kombat arcade machines back in 1993 are,.at the VERY least, in our 30's now. Most modern MK fans weren't even alive the last time an MK game was in the arcades. Most of us just don't have the time, or the patience to deal with the immature shit on forums. I came back to this forum because I was hyped about MKX, only to find that the MK fandom hasn't really changed much. I largely do not like the MK community. and find it to be one of the worst of all of the fan bases that I've encountered. I otherwise avoid forums. The majority of the "big name" people who used to be here - FatSatan, dominojr, MaxDam, Shang_Heihachi, and many others just moved on, sick of the nonsense.

This is a renaissance era for MK. It all boils down to nostalgia. People are unable to handle the "new" of MKX.

I respect your opinion and reply. If you want to know what im talking about, than atleast look at the video. As i said before, this guy talks about it in the video.

Nothing to do with nostalgia bro, simpley things that were part of MK. Like outworld used to look purple for example. in mkx, not anymore

I dont what this thread to turn in a nostalgia discussion. Recently ppl blame every thing on nostalgia, wich is not always the case.

So if you were really interested in what i think, take a look at the video.

You talk about the 3D era like it sucked big time. I remember having lots of fun with Konquest mode and the krypt. I agree that the gameplay was a clunky mess and some things were incomplete ok, but thats what we all agree on. Atleast on the forum. maybe story could been better but overall i enjoyd the 3D games in terms of unlockability and konquest. They were really MK games.

No sir. MKDA and MKD were the peak of MK's lore.

Personally, I think that has a lot to do with the fact that the team wasn't insanely focused on the gameplay and balancing. On a grander scale, the balancing is working more in their favor these days though. Which isn't a bad thing by any means, but the story has suffered quite a bit.

Your average player (the money makers) won't give two hoots about the story anyway so I guess NRS is just playing on the other side of the fence for now. It's working for them, so why not?

Thanks, I appreciate your honesty.

Deception was a great example of the 3d era really trying. It was immeasurably better than DA but it was still a struggling, sub-par game. And sorry, I couldn't view the video because i'm at work right now.

As for the Outworld being purple thing...it never officially designated as purple. There was 1 stage in Mortal Kombat 2 where Outworld was purple - the Wastelands. Most stages were set in a night time setting. Shao Kahn's arena showed a dull blue sky, as did the Tower. The Kombat Tomb showed a red sky (possibly the sun setting?). The joke in MKX about Jacqui thinking outworld was purple...it never was. Even in games after MK2, Outworld was different. In Konquest mode, it had a pinkish purple haze to it, but otherwise it was never consistently purple throughout the games.

Part of my reason for hating the 3d era as well is because of how bad the character design was - look back at DA, how disproportionate the bodies were, the giant hands, tiny heads, the AWFUL fatalities in Deadly Alliance...every 3d era game reeked of being rushed and incomplete. They had great vision for the game, but not enough time, and not enough budget, to ever truly polish them. Deadly Alliance especially - look at all the hype, the concept work that went into it. This forum was abuzz for 2 straight years over the concept art and leaked info, and in the end, barely any of that amazing concept work got into the lore of the game. Look at the transition to MK9/MKX. They left behind the over-the-top goofiness which got really out of control in the 3d era. I loved that it returned to its dark roots.

It's just a new era...the series is maturing as its core, legacy audience does as well. The changes they are making are more in line with the original vision they had for the game.

Steve Beran addressed this in an interview before MKX came out. They wanted a more serious and realistic art direction for MKX. Steve has been working on MK for more than 15 years this ain't WB's doing.

Personally it's something I've been asking for for a long ass time and I've a fan of the series since MK1.

I think the MKX stages look great, I would agree that some of them lack a bit of flavor to make them really special and there's not enough of them. But the lack of purple sky is such a petty issue compared to all the more important things MKX got right.

This is the best looking game in the series in terms of art since Mortal Kombat 2, imo. Easily.

One thing I liked better about the older games than mkx were the side stories. I think in Deception they were conveyed really well through the endings and koquest mode. Every character felt like they had their own unique motives and objectives, while in mkx it kinda just feels like the plot is focused on one major plot thread, ignoring the complex side plots. While a few characters got fleshed out this way, most got left behind in terms of character development.

There is a chance the sky is only purple at certain areas and/or certain times of day in Outworld, I refuse to believe they retconned it out (considering Wastelands is one of my all time favorite stages)

Right - one thing I do miss is how arcade endings were relevant to telling the story of the next game. Noob Saibot being Sub-Zero's brother was a revelation - sub's death in Noob's ending didn't actually occur, but it the bombshell of him being elder Sub-Zero, and the fact that Smoke still had his soul and was malfunctioning in Netherrealm was good character development.

MK4 really did well with that, seeing as how many character endings were interconnected (For example, Jax, Sonya and Jarek all have the same exact ending, with a slightly different outcome depending on who you win with).

The endings on the classic ladders for MKX were terrible. Sub-Zero decides he wants to play "How to Train Your Dragon". What about that awesome setup from MK9, which ended up coming into fruition during MKX's story mode. We learned in MK9 that Kuai and Bi were actually NOT born into the clan, but abducted as children. This is touched upon, and in the MK9 non-canon ending, the setup of the "Fire and Ice" "Deadly Alliance" came to pass - something they cemented into MKX story mode. But these MKX endings...some of them just seem so "ugh, we need to ship the game tomorrow and we need a stupid ending for this guy" sort of deals.

Others, meanwhile, were very good. I liked Ermac's ending a lot, setting the stage for Shang Tsung to return, who was mentioned in several endings.

We'll see what happens. I for one really like the direction MK is headed, but it does seem like those classic ladder endings were less "setup" than in previous entries and more of an afterthought. Very few characters had endings that seemed like they would be relevant (or even good).

I loved the 3D era, and if back then patches were accessible like today, the infinities and create a character stuff would've been balanced out and it would have not have been so rushed.

I think that the purple skys gave outworld an iconic feel. dark purples and dark blues worked well with the stages and represented a strong feel for the world. offcourse they could mix the day and night time, but giving it a unique feel helps feeling aliante when in outworld.

Lol, i agree. they reminded me of their toy line from jawarez. design wise they failed some stuff, but when it came to stages, i really liked them. I live that oriental touch that MK used to have. now it seems slipping away. And i liked some of the katas, they looked quite correct.

I have no problems with growing the franchise, but i dont like that they dish some elements instead of evolving them in the series. some core stuff should progress and improve instead of replaced for things that are just too far from what was there.

I am surprised you see MKX as the best art next to MK2. they are sooo different from eachother. I think that MK9 really hit the nail in terms of art. Especially when it came to the backgrounds and color using. But yeah, im a sucker for the classic stages lol, so thats an easy call

I don't mind it this way, to a certain extent. Outworld isn't just a small place, it's (supposedly) many times the size of Earth. It was its own world at one point, and now it has been merged with possibly hundreds of other completely different worlds. Just like our world in real life, there are bound to be places that look completely different than the normal places you would think of.

However, I really did like the purple glow of say, the wasteland stage. It really did make Outworld feel like an alien, otherworldly place, and it gave it a lot of character. I do think it was pretty iconic to have that purple glow in at least one Outworld stage, and I wish one of them in this game had it too. The desert marketplace and the tropical jungle were cool, and I do feel they fit in, but it didn't give me that same "This is not Earth" feeling. The Kove did a better job of that, but it still didn't quite match the eeriness of Outworld from older games.

Also, I think it's funny that in the scene from story mode where Kung Jin said "Don't believe everything you read online..." , to me it seemed like he implying that the idea of the sky being purple was something of a myth or urban legend, which would directly conflict with what we the audience have seen in previous games. But I guess with a stretch of the imagination you could say he meant something like "That's true for some parts of Outworld, but the part of it we happen to be in is more normal looking".

I agree that outworld has merged by time. But so far i remember the sky on earth is always blue/white at day time and it darkens when it reaches night time. So far everywhere on earth it shares the same sky. Still i dont mind if outworld shares some differences when it comes to the sky. As it shares alot of different influances and weird energies etc. But as you also stated the purple sky gave it an alian and iconic feel so why they kept it completely out in MKX idk.

About that funny scene from story mode where Kung Jin said "Don't believe everything you read online... I see it just as confirm to the reboot. Screw whatever you knew about the old outworld, deal with the new outworld. That's how i feel about those jokes. It's not the first time NRS did a few times before.

That is not always true. During aurora borealis the sky turns green, on rainy days it's grey and could become purple during vulcan activities. There are parts of the world that are constantly in the dark and other with 23 hours of sun.

About Kung Jin 's joke in story mode, It was a reference of how unreliable wikis and fansites can be sometimes. In other words, just believe in what John Vogel says, him and noone else.

MKX's biggest problems are:
- the roster: too many SF, not enough diversity, nothing daring, not enough evil / dark
- underwhelming story, which was supposed to as good as a true 90 minutes movie..
- treating great characters like shit
- variations system, causing staple moves not to be available for a character
- music (not MK like)
- the air of asian influence, fantasy and darkness that pervaded earlier games missing
- too many gimmicks
- X-rays being too easy, just a move taking away the speed of the game and a bail out
- way too much overlap between brutalities
- very few great stages

I know Deception and a lot of games were far from great but they felt like MK games. MKX while great with getting some characters, the graphics and fatalities right, just too flawed.

1) in mkx we had one of the best roster ever , no one cares for Hotaru and the likes just accept it.
Btw, Johnny Cage is not part of the specil forces he is just the mentor of his own team, which takes orders directly from sonya. Takeda and kung jin are not sf either. Jax is no longer part of it.
Kenshi will be sf until his work will interfere with his revenge on Daegon.
As for now the only characters that really are spcial forces are sonya, jacqui and cassie. And kenshi for the moment.

2) don't know which story mode you saw, but the one in mkx was amazing.
3) which ones?
4)again, this is just your pov. Many other people, myself included, love the variation system because it adds diversity and match ups against counter-picks.
5)the only point I agree with, though the krossroads music is great
6)The sky temple and the kove ring a bell
7)what gimmicks? Finally we had one of the best gameplays ever. Chess kombat, motor kombat, air kombat, weapon kombat from mk4 were gimmiks. I see none in mkx. Maybe the QTEs in story mode, but they have no influence throughout the story.
8)that's the point of xrays, since mk9. And really good players use them very seldom.
9) every character has unique and funny ones, I see no overlapping; giving some examples would be a good start to prove your point.
10) already accounted for in point 6

Saying that MkX is flawed compared to deception, is pretty much the same thing sayin' whoopi goldberg is hotter than scarlet johansson because she is taller
Sky could still be purple in volcanic areas...

The sky appears in different colors. But that is due to environmental changes or polution. If you look at it from stratosphere point of view sky is always blue. look at it from above the clouds, its always blue. (check John tyndall) About the northen light that's a different story. Those are caused by solar winds, plasma clouds and magnetic field of the earth.

Besides the logics behind it, there was nothing wrong with the purple sky in the older games. It it blended good with the stages and created an iconic look for MK.
It's not even just the purple, but a lot of things, like the asian influences in architecture and a lot of color in general. MKX looks very bland in a lot of areas. It seems like many aspects of the game tried too hard to be anything but Mortal Kombat to appeal to people that weren't MK fans or make the game seem "grounded/realistic" whatever term you wanna use for it. It's something that dulls down a lot of games and movies these days. Not that it has to be insanely over the top, but MK never really took itself too seriously. MKX is trying to a little bit more and it looks less unique as a result of it.

Exactly. Im surprised such a small group of MK fans noticed this or agreeing on this. This bothers me to hell with MK and recent media. Most games these days lack color. I m not saying every game should look like pokemon or mario but atleast give us more than grey tones with different shades of blue and red.

Rockstar games are a great example. GTA games always look good and colorful, just in real life. I dont get bored when i walk on the maps of GTA. Watchdogs in contrary looks dull and grey and get old really fast. And im talking just about visuals. Its overall grey/ blue with some yellow. Now MK seems to go that same direction.

Im happy you post on here. I defenitly agree.
