Reinventing MORTAL KOMBAT to ensure MK7 reinvents the Fighting Genre, and looks very different from MKD

Well MKDA broke the mould of MK game making, MKD basically was just the improved version of what MKDA should have been. But what will the future hold for MK7. It will be on a new platform eg: Playstation 3, XBOX 2 etc. The cheap way out would be to keep game play engine of MKD and redesign the Graphics engine to keep up with standards of the new systems But that would end the Franchise for sure and piss of a lot of fans.

The real way to do it:

MK7 needs to be as different from MKD as MKDA was from MK1. Simple and end of story.

The Midway team needs to throw it all way. Bring in some fresh talent, and start from 100% scratch. Everything needs go. Not one part of MKDA, MKD should go into MK7 except for the title of "Mortal Kombat", classic characters and story elements. Thats it. Check out my suggestions below. Number 12 and 14 are my favourite ideas.

1. For instances every sound should be recreated from scratch, new punch sounds, new moans, new power sounds etc.

2. All character designs should now take on a PHOTOREALSTIC look. If not base each character on real life counterpart and scan them use there facial textures and skin textures, and motion capture each actor to bring there personailty into the characters. Photorealstic options are viable it just takes more memory and a longer production time, Well start now and by the time the next systems are out it will be ready.

3. Everything from power bars, to titles and menus should be redesigned.

4. Gameplay options. Its about being fluid and real, realstic animation counts, real physics, etc.

5. A new feature could be 'KLASSIC KOMBAT' Where when selected it only allows Characters from the first MK game or first 4 mk games to be choosen from a special Klassic Kombat menu. When every character appears in classic costume only. By classic i mean a complete recreation of the costume in 3d from the first time they appeared.

6. On the normal menu You have your main selection of 32 Characters. Which comprise of the orignal klassics (MK 1) and New and returning characters from MKDA and MKD.

7. As for costumes well you have 4 options, You choose you character and then you select standard Costume, Alternate Costume, Random Costume or Custom Costume. Custom costume comes from a new feature which allows players to Kreate-A-Character or Kreate a look for an existing Character. Random Costume just randomly selects clothing from the Costume database of thousands of pieces of apparel Much like the Wrestling games.

8. Kreate-a-Character: MK7 needs an ability create a character from scratch. You choose your Race, Gender etc then clothing and then martial arts style and you can choose 2 powers.

9. Before a tournament the Characters should have some interaction. If Scorpion fights quan Chi Scorpion should announce that Quan Chi will pay for dishonor and if Liu Kang fights Raiden He should announce he is no longer going to listen and raiden be fight back or something. Bring some emotion into the fights. instead of just posing before it says round 1.

10. on the subject of rounds, they could possibley remove the notion of rounds and just have it as a Death match. 1 round to the death. power bar drains slower. but round lasts longer.

11. The game has to go back to a tournament story line. Maybe focus on the Elder gods holding a Mortal Kombat tournament for the purpose of...........

12. FIGHT damage. This is a big one. Each punch, Each wound, stabbing sword swing should leave damage on the oppoenent. For example if Scorpion swings his sword and its a clean hit on an enemny it should leave a major wound, if he hits twice say in the arm the players arm should be cut off. IT doesnt mean its game over it means that player now has one arm and is trying to punch with a stump (so every second punch will make contact, i.e they now only have one arm to hit with) if both arms are cut off then only kicks will do damage. etc... This type of kombat could reinvent the game your basically using fatalties mid round with out the game ending just crippling the other player.


13. The martial arts system is good, but needs reworking. Perhaps bring in 4 styles to choose from or some other notion all together.

14. A run button concept or something similar would be cool picture, this your fighting it out and players is approaching you from the right. You use the run button to run left and your player runs up the wall and does a jump kick back to the right using the wall to gain more strenght.

15. Kreate-a-costume: besides create a character, Create a costume for an existing character would be cool.

16. FMV endings if they use real texutures and motion capture from real actors then perhaps they could film real video of these people for the character endings (although it could conflict with kreate a costume, as the character appears in there mk7 costume in the end video)

17. If konquest mode survives it should become true to the Kombat story, not just trying to cram every mk character into a muddle mess of storyline conflicts. The Krypt and Konquest should combined. You unlock stuff in Konquest directly no krypt. Also no training should take place in konquest, traing should be combined into the practice mode. ITs there if you want, not be forced to do combos and simple press kick, press punch rubbish.

18. As for storyline, I would like to go with some kind of battle in the heavens, hence the reason the Elder gods hold a tournament. I also would like to See Shao Kahn as a playable character trying to reclaim his throne. Also introduce King Jarod of Edenia as selectable fighter.

19. Arenas: Should be realstic, multi leveled and Keeping with the deathtrap idea, just improve it. Areana suggestions: Cloud Temple, Sewer sanctum,
The Krypt, Special forces HQ, Lin Kuei training ground, Elder gods Council, Dark forest, Outworld Waste lands, Edenia Kingdom. See below for descriptions

20. I wouldnt mind to see Scorpion in more of Heavenly way. No longer a demon but a higher being. with spooky white glow. same powers but more angel like than demonic.

21. Sub-zero should have an apprentice. A new lin Kuei Ninja, new powers new abilities. Perhaps Hydro or something. similar. No not Frost.

22. Bring back test your might as far as mini games go.

23. If necessary Mini games include: MK7 Pong and MK1 or cheat and use only mk1 characters in an klassic kombat game, with mk 2d levels and the camera is locked to a 2d view only. but characters are 3d if ya get my meaning..that could be a mini game

Arena Descriptions:

Cloud Temple: Its a temple to the sky gods. You fight high in the sky , if your kicked off you fall all the way back to earth (ouch)

Sewer sanctum: You stand kneed deep in sludge. its dark and dirty. Some parts there is no floor and so you will be sucked into the sludgey mess

The Krypt: basically your fighting in graveyard, except some graves have just been dug, you can fall into these and some zombies try to reach up grab you

Special forces HQ: Says enought, this area you can see army officers walking around, Jax's arms hanging on a wall bracker. get to close they may grab you

Lin Kuei training ground: in background like in MKD konquest, ninja are training, closer your get they may turn there interest on you. Get to close and you may get gang bashed by 10 ninja.....game over.

Elder gods Council : the arena is round, lined with elder gods in thrones, getting to close you may get zapped

Dark forest: Like the living forest but in the Netherealm

Outworld Waste lands: Lots of nomads come to watch your fight, it is night time and there are camp fires around. They burn ya, nomads through rocks at ya, also watch out for baraka he has be known to swing his blade if you get to close to him,

Edenia Kingdom: very formal arena. Lots of gold and jade stones.

MK 7 will need alot of work.The fighting engine must be reworked from the ground up.First they should lose the 3 fighting styles per character.Give everyone one style some two,armed and un-armed(Like Mileena).Some fighters can have three or four styles like Lie Wulong(sp)from Tekken.Make the styles deeper more moves pokes,power movers ground game.The most they should work on is defense,not just blocking and ducking but real defense.Every move should be able to be counterd or reversed,parries can push fighters who are to attack happy moves aside to attack them.Most special moves can be use in combos like fire balls and such.A real combo system no more dial a combos you should have to come up with your own combos and many can be branched.The more creative you are the better the combos can be.

The characters should be mostly returning charcters.Someone posted that all charcters whom been in MK should apper at lease twice and I agree well besides Meat and Mokap that is.Some charcters that should make thier second MK showing are Sektor,Stryker,Rain,Sheeva,Reiko,Sereena,Fugin and Nitira.Add three new characters and the rest can be charcters that are returning Sub,Scorp etc.And fan favs Reptile and Sho Khan should return hell more people asked for thier return more the anyone else.

A cool boss I had such high hopes for Onaga but damn he is lame,he dies in almost everyones ending and he supposed to be more powerful then Raiden a god yeah right!


I liked MKD but it's time for the MK staff to try and build the best most complex fighter every made.And people who said it shouldn't try to be Tekken or VF ARE RIGHT IT SHOULD TRY TO BE EVEN MORE COMLEXED.No more kontent imo fuck the extra kontent most of it is pointless anway and people will complain no matter how much they put in.

I'd rather master a character which may take a week or two then play konquest and beat it in a week.I'd feel like I earned I how good I was with a character.That way it will take you months to master 20 or so fighters and to me thats the fun working to get better should be whats fun.I know not everyone thinks like that and the game should still remain easy to pick up but to become trully skilled like any thing else should take time and a bunch of practice.

I hope MK7 will go that way and not give us all fluff and no substince I think it's time for mk to take the title as best fighter and more depth is the only way to go.

Re-invent MK? For MK to be re-invented it needs to actually take steps which insure it's viability as a legit, competent fighter. Don't take this the wrong way, but almost everything you listed is asthetic and surface. Asthetics do nothing to "re-invent" a subject matter. More characters, altered storylines, etc; do not constitute a change in direction for any game - unless it's an RPG, then those issues become more viable. You "invent" nothing when you model another "cool" ninja, tweak a storyline or develop sweet environment and atmospheric effects.

Re-invention comes from one single ideal; that of complete change. A complete change in thought, concept and implemention of the final product. Change, true change, with anything starts at a subjects core. The core of a game is how it plays. The players development, thought process and experience on an interactive level.

Asthetics are easy. Any technically sound artist can model a sweet looking character, any texture artist can photoshop out some great looking textures, any fx artist can develop a great atmospheric system. The MK devs have always, and will continue, to excersie a great aptitude for this. They need to change their ideals on gameplay, however. Only that, and that alone, will breath any new life into the series.

Reinvention means starting from the beginning again. The beginning was MK1.
If Boon was to restart MK1, what changes do you think he should make? (In other words) if we had the MK series to do all over again, what would you do differently and what would you keep the same?

I think what you're asking would take more time to develop than Midway's desire, and given Midway's financial situation and how Mortal Kombat is basically their saviour in that department I don't think they want to waste time and keep releasing MK titles as fast as they can.

Well the fist thing I would do is redo the konquest thing. I liked the idea of a rpg but it didnt tell you any thing about the chars like mkda did. It was all about that old bastard. They should have made it so you can play with any char. You go though the events leading up to MK7. This would be even better for the classic chars. Like Scrop, you start with a little move of Sub-Zero killing him. The you play though konquest going though Scrops story starting a mk1 and going up to mk7. This would be cool cuz you would get there full stoy insted of a bio pic that you get.

No disrespect but thats the problem MK isn't about Konquest it's should be about fighting.I like your ideal but that the last thing the mk team should worry about.Rebuild he fighting engine first and formost.Anything else added after will just be icing on the cake.

To reinvent MK, like many of you said, you have to start at the core. the core isn't MK 1, the core is what MK is in general. It's a fighting game, so to make progress, MK is going to have to start there first, then after, building a foundation, they can add on the extras.

Well I said before but the main reinvention of the MK 7 should be the fighting system and damage system..... On my site I have mentioned removing the 3 fighting styles and replacing them with one huge style.....

But body damage should be the main one.....

If i hit ya with a sword your arm should be cut off.....

Mk anint broke. But two games with the same engine is plenty . Its time to reinvent like i said not one part of MKDA or MKD should be used in the creation of MK7

some would argue the fighting engine is broken, some would say it is not... but I've said this time and again: the MK franchise has loyal fans (or zealots, whatever) that will buy any product, regardless of what others think. I've also said time and again, that Boon and Co are smart, and are also looking to make some money

so maybe the saying should be "if Ed aint broke, don't fix it"

this is why Mortal Kombat will never reinvent the fighting genre

but to tell the truth, I can't see any other series really reinventing the genre on current or even the next-gen consoles... to me, reinventing would mean virtual reality (ik it's been done before in some arcade machines)... the PS2 eyetoy, as goofy as it may seem, is a step in the right direction for VR in a console and further immersion into a game

Like so many have said before, what really needs to be fixed is the fighting engine. No more universal tracking, no more dial-a-combo, real move properties, different move execution time(in MKDA and MKD, all moves come out as fast as a scud missile),stuns, real juggles, counters, parries, etc... Fatalities are but icing on the cake, and if the cake tastes like dog shit, well, sorry but no.

MKD is broken. Jade can do 99% damage in 8 seconds. Why? Cause if you miss the first hit of a dial-a-combo, the equations go H-wire and lead up to damage values like 75% and so on. And almost every fighter has an infinite.


Unless the fighting engine is fixed, nothing can change the way we perceive MK.

Cyborg_wolf you hit the nail on the head. The games are broken. But, if I Boon and c.o. plan on a mk game every year there is little to no hope of things getting fixed. It will be come as redundant as KOF has. Sure there will be some new stuff thrown in here and there but it still will be the same thing over and over.

Oh and I didnt mean that konquest should be the main focus of the game. I woudnt care if it was even in the next game. Its just an ideas I desided to post.

Well the next MK will be on PS3,X-Box2 and the new Nintendo system.So i think it may be at lease two to three years before we see the next MK.Damn thats a long wait but I rather wait to get the best fighter every made the just another rehashed MK with more extras.
