My bet's on Raiden. They've been alluding to him turning crazed and dark for a few installments now, and he really strikes me as the best candidate with the power and station to return as a boss.

Then again, they made Blaze a boss, so who the hell knows.

If the timeline cross happens, I'd say Dark Raiden.

I could see that. I could also see Raiden eventually snap and become the villain. Or Liu Kang who's out for revenge against Raiden. I think it'll be the most shocking for casual gamers if they see the main hero of the previous games become the main villain.

I just can't see him as the big bad.

We'd all expect a good person to turn evil, maybe not Sonya or Johnny Cage, but anything is possible.

We'd also all expect any villain to come to power. What we don't expect is a forgettable character.

I've been very receptive to the changes that the MK team has implemented but I hate having a surprise returning character being a boss.

Who knows, maybe when I found out who it is and see some vids the idea will win me over, but as of now I am just not feeling it.

I was really hoping for Shinnok, and if it couldn't be him someone entirely new. Oh well, at least Boon prepared me now so I don't have to be disappointed later.

As it's "a fun surprise, returning character" that "not a lot of people will see [] coming", this leads me to believe that Dark Raiden and Evil Liu are still too obvious, even though they're the first people to come to mind.
The way Ed talks about this character gives hint that he/she/it was never a boss character to begin with; that narrows it down ever so slightly.
Maybe I'm just overestimating, though.

Boon said someone we wouldn't see coming so Liu Kang, raiden, Shinnok are all out , they are too obvious it's someone else

mileena. with her father dead she rises up and takes over the tarkatan army with baraka by her side. creating a war in outworld. the older earthrealmers form a younger team to guide in helping an unusual ally?

Ya know I've also thought Raiden and Kang, and would love it if it was Raiden. However, both seem really obvious to me. That's just me though. Like I would guess that too easily.

Raiden and Liu Kang are - as this thread clearly shows - among the most obvious.

Both have already been shown to do some dark things, and they are both heroes of the franchise. It is an all-too-common occurrence of major heroes turning evil.

We need to think outside the box, people! Think of the one character you would never expect to become undoubtedly evil!
