I enjoyed it, if only for the subby/cage bromance.

No but Sub-Zero will always get a chapter.

honestly, his chapter could have been at the end of the game, right before Cassie's squad gets in the Sky Temple. either that,or given this game's love of flashbacks, how he reformed the Lin Kuei clan (complete with a Sektor NPC fight)

Because he's a poster boy, nuff said.

The question isn't "was it necessary", but rather "was it a waste of a chapter for him?"
So the answer is yes. I appreciated the whole "testing the newbies" aspect, but that could've been accomplished with Sonya or Jax instead...the Jax chapter could've been swapped for Fujin had he made it to the roster.

I agree, his inclusion after chapter one felt really forced, especially his chapter, may as well be titled: protagonist meet Sub-Zero because he needs screen time.

I thought it was great. It showed the newbies weren't in sync yet and that the Lin Kuei were now a force of good living in their on. It was necessary for the story hand and it helped show the growth of the kids later on during the outworld, the prison and forest scenes.
I liked the fact that Sub was out doing his own thing. The good guys don't need to hang around all the time. The scene wouldn't have been as good with other characters and it wouldn't have worked aswell had it been a cutscene instead of us wrecking the kids.

Yeah I reckon it was a complete waste for him his chapter would have been better near the end perhaps half a flash back chapter showing how he took over the Lin kuie then ended with him saving the kombat kids in the Forrest from kotal and his boys. The training chapter (if needed at all) should have been someone boring like cage, sonya or jax And jax's chapter should have been kenshi can't believe old blindy didn't get his own chapter

I thought it felt really out of lace and a bit of a waste of a chapter.
For me they should've had a story chapter from one of the revenants while under Quam Chi's control, and it could've went to Sub Zero, or even have had the part where he is restored be his chapter and show the impact of what had happened etc rather than it be in a flashback chapter.

This!
The chapter itself though was obviously there just to switch up the usual Kahn punching bags.
