Before the boon lovers rock up, I am a huge fan, hence why I critique. Been playing mk since mk1 i arcades....

Anyway, to me MKX was a massive let down....And I would like to share my views and see what you all think.

1. Story.
The story was terrible, the comics by kittlesen did a much better job, and I would have been happy with the games story being about the outworld civil war, and the netherealm war, what we got was shit...And severely damaged the story, the stages we got and the roster. I will explain how.

MK9, the reboot allowed for the next mk to be amazing, however it was just raped, now I feel there is no way to get back on track with out rebooting it again... why? Well....mk9s ending set the stage for a very dark an bleak next chapter....They killed off half the roster to allow for change, and new blood, this was said by the NRS team MANY TIMES. ...This lead many of us to believe, that Raiden and FUJIN would have to face the next challenge with what remained of earthrealms warriors, and maybe forging new alliances to combat quanchi and shinnok, while a civil war took place....And perhaps a new tournament, as there has not been one since fucking mk2!!!

My ideal plot would have been, outworld an earthrealm team up to stop the netherrealm, and all kinds of subplots could have been intertwined, the outworld civil war, the lin kue and shirai ryu being restored and forging an alliance, Involve the Red dragon, and even the Sektors cyberized can.....

Main things a plot like this could benefit from. Such as new characters that made sense, and new stages that made sense... By doing this, we could have seen a shirai ryu temple stage, with warriors watching an training in the back ground, and a shirai ryu forest, nice lush an green...I mean the lin kue got a stage, the dead forest while it looks good, has no real place or point, you would assume its part of the lin kue....but its not...its just a stage....that serves no purpose....its just in some unknown location....We could have seen a Red dragon stage, a tenkuin stage, more of outworld and netherealm...but for the most part the stages were garbage...

And finally with regards to the story, the dead should have stayed DEAD! DEATH NEEDS TO MATTER IN THIS GAME AND STORY! The stupid resurrection plots are idiotic by now! Why are liu kang, kung lao, and kitana, all back as humans? it did not happen in the story, why are they even in the fucking game as playable? Have people not had enough of these fuckin characters? They should have remained as nothing but npcs to serve the story and maybe released as a revenant pack later...Jax, served no purpose, neither did his daughter, having johnny and or sonya made sense, but cassie as well? it was just over kill...pick 1 or 2, not all 3!! The parents were survivors so it made sense, and kenshi did not need to make a return and goro was utterly pointless and had no reason to be there at all.... but a lot of the roster could have been replaced ti make it a far greater game...Remove kitana, kung loa, liu kang, jax, jaquie, work out what to do with the cage family...and replace them with, reiko, baraka, fujin, rain, havik, sektor, smoke.....already we are getting some where....roster should have been...

Scorpion - restored shirai ryu, working with raiden an new found lin kue alliance, accompanied by his star pupils takeda an forrest fox.

subzero - maybe is bi han cleanses from soul nado, learnt the truh about quan chi mends shit with scorp, works with smoke to restore the lin kue and destroy sektor, working with shirai ryu, or maybe ist a completely new subzero with the same goal, a family member what ever.

Smoke - yes he died, but only his body, hes an enera, he could easily be back in a new human form, helping restore the lin kue

Takeda - follows scorp, make him a hard ass, not a teen punk faggot like all the kids were, would not be part of special forces, just shirai ryu

Forrest fox - new shirai member, one variation could have seen him with his face cut off, as he is corrupted by the blood god, and maybe dies in his first appearance in mk

Red Dragon member - steps up after movado is murdered, allies with mileena in civil war in exchange to have the black dragon removed

Kano - aiding kotal, for the same reasons as the red dragon allie with mileena

Rain - loyal to milleena, has his own aspirations however

Tanya - loyal to shinnok

baraka - 100% loyal to mileena, aids her with tarkatan armies, stands by as she pretends to be with reiko and the pair plan to rule as partners.

Reiko - allied with havik an using mileena to rule

Havi - Being havik causing chaos

fujin - helping raiden, maybe has a fallin out due ot how raiden is becoming

Raiden - going all dark raiden in his quest to protect ER

Sektor - struggling to maintain grip on lin kue, losses it stars tenkuin, who lin kue want gone too

quanchi - obvious

shinnok - obvious

kung jin - aids raiden, white lotus not SF

ferra/torr - kotals body guard

reptile - kotals spy, assasin

Dvorah - kotals allie, secret shinnok loyalist

Cassie - follows mums line of work, is SF

johhny - has matured aids raiden, advisor to sf, is now white lotus after the death of kang

sonya - aids johhny an raiden, looks over cassie is SF

erron black - as is kotals guy

Kotal khan - challenging mileena for the throne

Ermac - stays loyal to mileena

Right threre is how the roster should have been on day one release!

and i bet a lot more people would have been happier!

I just see the game as a massive wasted opportunity, and it was just trilogy again.

i dont know how or what they are doing next....to make it better but fuck....to me mkx lasted a month...

OK, so what about the souls of everyone else that's been killed? By your logic, as long as someone's soul(or non human form) remains intact, anyone is fair game to be brought back, thus breaking one of your cardinal commandments for a good story. You're jumping through loopholes for characters you want alive, and lambasting NRS writers for doing the same.

We saw Quan Chi controlling the revenants in MK9. He got their souls to use during the Netherrealm war. If you didn't expect some of the dead guys from MK9 to be playable again, then it is your fault.

Also, they base the story around the roster and stages they have planned. It is a fighting game first. I remember hearing somewhere that having to link all the fights to these certain areas was quite the challenge for the writers, and that shows. If you want to say how they could have done it better then you should also consider the restrictions they had. Kittlestin didn't have those limitations.

Finally, my only problems with the story was how it was presented. A lot of the circumstances were interesting and the characters have had nice development and potential, but the chapter system of following specific characters around hurt the pacing of the story by chunking it up and hurt the depth many of us fell in love with. An example would be Reptile. Unlike all the other games he played little to no part in with the main story, we didn't get any type of look into his mind. The point of view the story mode pretty much just made him into a body to beat up.

My solution to this would be to either put more effort into the bios, since this is all we had before and they did a great job of presenting each characters presence, or to simply restructure the point of view of the story mode to give us snippets of each character instead of trying to show it linearly. Like you go into the mode and select a character, the bio is stated and either a cinematic or fight plays showing what that character is doing for this game. Each character would only need 2 or 3 fights with a cinematic or two. If it gets to be too much, then a voice over with text could fill in some gaps. Reusing scenes would also be fine for the characters who share important moments. Something that would also be cool to see would be the DLC characters getting their own chapters to give them more importance and a place in the game.

no, its not my fault, the NRS team, several members of the team said, they killed them off to bring new life in....they brought basically the entire roster back....

yes they were controlled....but they should have stayed controlled revenants and NPC.....MAYBE released as a revenant back....

What they meant by that was they were going to bring new characters in the game and that is what they did. Only Deception brought more new characters.

Which they did... to fight the revenants. Lui had the most character development here than literally every other game he has been in. While not impactful to the main story (which was most that was shown) this was a big moment for him. Kitana and Kung Lao are similar and all three are seemingly going to play a big part in the next game because of their inclusion here. Both Scorpion and Sub-Zero started down new paths due to their revival as well. All the while Nightwolf, Sindel, Kabal, and Stryker are just bodies for the heroes to go through now. Jade and Smoke both only have hints of future things that are now only possible because of their death. I will agree that Jax only seemed to be used for the inclusion of Jacqie and as an unsatisfying comeuppance for Quan Chi taking their souls.

I would say the deaths of the characters in MK9 are the best this franchise has ever dealt with death. All of these characters (with the possible exception of Jax) have evolved and opened the gate way for new heroes and new possibilities.

why not make liu and kitana, and kung loa npcs though...why are they human in the roster and playable? Why not make them playable next game as evil? It just seems like wasted slots.

yeah they added new people, 2 of them fucking sucked.....if liu, kitana, and loa, and jax were gone a jackie we could have had more new and better ones, now the shirai you is back, we coulda had forrest fox, we could have had a red dragon member, old ones like reiko or fujin.....but no...we got scooby doo spec forces and the time tired shit since trilogy.

Hey CISIS!
I know what you mean, I have a lot of same feelings too...

I am also a MKplayer from the beginning but I dont play MK for the story anymore.
Only for the fighters and the gore, thats what keeps me playing.
I love how the characters are designed but the story is indeed lame as F@ck.

My hart is still with the oldskool MK, MK2(favourite), UMK3, MK4.
The 3d era was fun but allready changed a lot.

MK9 was very cool/good.

My advise: play vs with friends or online, makes the game more fun to play. wink

Hard to take somebody seriously when they throw around terms like "raped" and "faggot" while trying to engage in poignant discussion. You're really just screaming into the wind.

Having said that, it boggles my mind that people still don't understand how MK works after all these years. Death is never permanent in MK. It never will be permanent. The sooner you, and others realize this, the better off you'll be. NRS is never going to paint themselves into a corner by eliminating a character forever. It's stupid to even think that.

Secondly, the Trilogy era characters are the most popular. They always have been and as a group, they always will be. Expecting them to disappear, take a "time out," etc. is again...stupid. This game, as is the case with every other commercial product, is about units sold. You sell the most units by incorporating the most recognizable characters to appeal to the most amount of people. Casuals outnumber hard core fans, and they want to play as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, etc. not Havik, who most people don't even know nor care about. Hell, I consider myself a big fan and I don't give two shits about Havik. I'd be fine, almost happy, if he never appeared again because of the whining that takes place on this board about him from a small group of people. They act like he was some super popular force that revolutionized the series, instead of a throwaway zombie with mace whose "cool" moves involved manipulating his joints. Yay?

Most of the 3d era characters are crap. Sure each of them have a group of fans that like to get "loud" on the Internet, but by and large it's a small group of people. They claim so-and-so can be redeemed with another appearance, where it's just as likely that character will be garbage again. The problem with a lot of MK fans is they each want their own personalized game and more often then not it sounds an awful lot like an updated version of Armageddon. No amount of characters is ever enough. There's never enough stages, fatalities, secrets, costumes, etc. I've come to believe hardcore MK fans deserve Boon's trolling at this point.

Just admit that you want YOUR favorites in over other people's favorites and accept that's never going to happen.

Wrote a lot of stuff

You do bring up some interesting points. There's really no argument, the story of MKX was lackluster at best. A lot of missed opportunities and "WTF" moments.

- Not enough emphasis on why exactly Shinnok was ultimately a bad-ass and so threatening to Earth (as well as other realms). One chapter (where he only appears at the end of said chapter) isn't really good enough to be honest, at least not to me. Should've been two chapters minimum to be more effective. Hell, could've thrown in some extra cameos just to show what a big menacing threat he is (insert B/C list cameo here). Imagine seeing Shinnok leading his undead army into a massive Shaolin temple, seeing the likes of someone like Kai or Shujinko trying to defend it with Raiden and having to watch Raiden and Fujin see all these monks perish in front of him, some by the hands of men and women who were his allies up to a few years ago.

- The green mystical power that the Cage family can summon was weakly thrown into the plot. If that was going to be made a plot point and ultimately be the sole reason Cassie is able to defeat an Elder God, it needed to be focused on and explored further to be explained other than a few dropped lines of dialogue about near-death experiences and feelings of love. Sorry, that shit don't cut it. Cassie beating Shinnok is fine and dandy but if you wanted to make the reasoning for it a plot point, give it some plot. No excuses for that.

- Outworld Civil War plot is too fleeting and thus ultimately feels like a complete waste of screen time. Not only that but to make matters worse, some of those involved in the war itself come across as completely pointless to the plot and serve no purpose of even being there other than to be a noticeable face in the background among a sea of lookalike Tarkatans (insert Erron Black and Ferra/Torr here).

- Characters who could've been easily more involved with the plot are glanced over and relegated to cameo status. Fujin being one as given how limited Raiden's resources are when it comes to allies in this game, he would've needed the extra back-up and Sareena definitely being another. They could have done way more with Sareena given that Earthrealm would've highly benefited from someone on the inside of Quan / Shinnok's plans yet it is condensed to a cameo which makes NO sense to me. Not only could she have been more involved with the actual invasion (giving the Earthrealmers and Raiden potential warnings) but she also could've been shown helping to lead Sonya / Johnny to Quan Chi's location to help free some of the revenants.

Those are the four biggest offenders to me that I can think of at the moment. Granted, I haven't played or watched the Story Mode in about 4/5 months so I'm sure I could think of more if I tried. The game did do some stuff right though in my eyes, most notably the conclusion of the Sub/Scorpion rivalry was handled quite nicely and is maybe one of my favorite scenes of the entire game.

Yeah Mortal Kombat X has a lot of flaws but I love it as it is. I mean you are entitled to your opinion of hating it. Even I could have came up with a better KP2 but anyway the game is one of the best in the series to me my favorite is Deception though. I thought the story was good but super short that was a bummer. But it didn't suck either though. I gave the story a 8/10. Game play to me is at a 7.5 right now maybe the new netcode will fix things. The stages I gave a 6/10 they are way too little amount of stages. But with the Pit being added it may go up to 7/10. Characters and Variations overall I gave a 7/10 because the variation system is good but it is a pain in the ass also. I was bummed by the short amount of characters but we now have 33 when all of KP2 is released. Overall the whole game itself gets an 8.5/10 from me. I like the game but you don't have to so I understand why you made this thread.wink

man, dont get me wrong, I think it looks amazing an plays amazing.....best lookin an gameplay yet......just think it was a let down....mainly coz of the roster
Movado doesn't really need to die. Technology has improved since his introduction, they can do a lot more with him now. Acrobatic Spiderman/Super Scorpion esque moveset.

Kung Jin IS White Lotus.

Ermac houses Shao Kahn's soul, he may be manipulating Ermac's decisions. Maybe he thinks Mileena fucked things up, and sees Katal as a better replacement or pawn.

Tanya not being a traitor this time threw me off.

Enenra taking control of Smoke after his death, a la Noob Saibot replacing Bi-Han's Sub-Zero is what we're assuming his inclusion in XI will be.

No offense CISIS, but where are you from or how old are you?
You misspell various things all the time.

I cant get past the looks of MKx. I really tried, gave it time to grow on me. It looks so grey and colorless compared to MK9. This is not even my opinion. compare MK9 to MKx and you can clrearly see the differences. I like dark but not like this, MK2 felt darker it had more color.

Stages i dont like for the most part. Characters stances look unatural and lame. Also how they perform their special moves, most are a step backwards. Especially in the cinematics of story mode you see how dumb it looks when they pull a special.

Mk9 was finally looking in the right direction. Great use of colors and stages.Character like Noob saibot, Ermac, Smoke, Shang tsung, Sindel. where all great designed.
MK9 MK9 (credits to crescentdebris)
In MKx All leather based bulky ninjas.

The only improvement i see with MKx is the speed and how some of the kicks and punches are mocaptured.

Mk had so much swag in the older games. Music, stages, stances, characters, fatalitys. I cant help to compare it to the older games. I hope this direction will end or else i have to drop the series.
