Anyway, I'd definitely say MK9's version was better, storywise. It didn't just focus on the monks for one thing, and didn't kill off nearly everyone else. Storywise, MK:SM was more simplistic than even MK: Annihilation was.
However, despite most of them dying, enforcers like Reptile and Baraka were treated with much more respect. They weren't jobbed out constantly, so that's one part where MK:SM excelled.
The MK9 version wasn't stellar storytelling, but at least it wasn't just the monks vs everyone else, with sometimes a little help from other heroes like Johnny and Jax, and Liu Kang wasn't Raiden's yes-man.
Neither, they both were lame. There was/is plenty to know about the original MK2 timeline, much like MK1 to MK3. Neither game came close to representing what happened or who the character were, even if you consider the "alternate" timeline. Both games took to many liberties with the source material.
