Are there any sites out there that give a nice explanation of the events in MK? I'm a little confused about certain things and would like to read up on the complete storyline.

Actually, you can probably learn just about everything from reading this thread right here:
http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/forum/showmessage.cds?id=101822
Most of which is written by XiahouDun, anyway, so...all the info you could get from him in a PM is probably already there.

Thank you, I'm slowly reading it over.
A few questions:
The fact that Kitana helped Liu Kang in the first movie is not cannon? She was instead working for Kahn until after the first tournament? I'm going to assume the first movie is not to be taken as cannon. Seems really dumb to me to make a movie and not follow your own storyline. Scorp and Sub were never "slaves" to Shang Tsung?
By winning the first tournament, Liu prevents Kahn from invading earth right? Then how did Baraka end up attacking the Shaolin Temple if that were true? Was it in fact Sindel's ressurection on Earth that gave Khan this access to earthrealm?

First of all, just pretend you never saw the movies. Nothing in them happened, they're not part of the canon.
Secondly, just because Kahn can't invade doesn't mean he can't send others through the portal. He just can't come to Earth in person and take over is what it means.
Baraka's attack was in MK2 and Sindel wasn't resurrected until MK3. When she was, that broke the rules and let Kahn come to Earth in person.

Kitana didn't help Liu Kang in the first tournament. Nor, do I believe, in the second. She debuted as a character in the second tournament, as an assassin of her adoptive father, Shao Kahn. During the course of this game, I believe, she discovered that Kahn took her natural realm by force, and killed her birth father.
In MK3, she was originally meant to be part of the story, I believe, but was cut out. She was added in Ultimate MK3 (an expanded version of MK3) as someone being tried for the murder of her cloned sister, Mileena. Kitana escapes and fights with Jade and the Earthrealm warriors to stop Kahn and swing Sindel back over to the side of good.
Sindel is resurrected by Shao Kahn in MK3 was a way to access Earthrealm without having to defeat Liu Kang, something he failed to do in the second game. Something to do with the sanctity of marriage, I guess.
You can find most of what you need to know on Wikipedia. Yes, anyone can edit that stuff, but screw it, it's a damn easy source and a great guide.

Kitana had already learned the truth about her past by MK2 and was only feigning loyalty to Kahn at the time. Prior to the tournament she is spotted speaking to an Earth fighter...though they never specify who.

try www.freewebs.com/kanonkombat/ , It's the most comprehensive compilation of sources available. Little website I established long ago.
