Chameleon Advice Needed

Hi everyone,

I'm an artist that has been commissioned to do some Klassic Mortal Kombat pieces, one of which is Chameleon.

The problem is we can't decide how to interpret him in 3D. We are using the Mortal Kombat Trilogy version of the ninjas for consistency, but searching for references brings up different interpretations.

Since we can't replicate how he actually looked in the game -- which seems to be a transparent gray palette swap that blinked into the other ninjas' colors -- we might have to settle on what the MK community considers correct.

And that seems to be something like this:

So if you were a Mortal Kombat fan looking to buy Chameleon merch, would that be cool, or would he look a little too...Fabulous? We can replicate that shiny rainbow look pretty dead on, but would MK fans still read that as Chameleon, or would it look too silly?

It would be something like this:

Another option is to try make it look more like the game sprite, so we could do a gray base that also changes color in the light. But would that read more as Noob or Smoke?

Finally, what color do you think his skin tone should be? Flesh tone like the other ninjas, or more grayish like the game itself?

I guess what it comes down to is, do we make him look like he does in those early appearances, or do we make him look like Mortal Kombat fans' perception of what he looked like, based on fan art and such?

Thanks so much for your help!

So first off: how are the other ninjas looking? As in are they all the same just with a different color or do they have a small detail that can set them apart?

Second: Chameleon has no unique sprite. A gray base belongs to Khameleon. He is simply transparent (no gray) and colored according to whoever moves he's using in Trilogy.

Third: Skin tone would be related to the first question. If you give Reptile green skin then go give Chameleon gray skin.

Chameleon (and Khameleon) never looked better than the appearance in MKA

ie.net/mkwikia/images/6/6e/Image11Chameleon.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/148?cb=20120530205056>
ie.net/mkwikia/images/6/6f/Image72Khameleon.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/136?cb=20120530213830>

It looks like NRS is keeping to the transparent skin in its current canon.

The colour scheme for the outfit itself can be turquoise or grey by default, or multi-rainbow colours and it all works with this option.

There's also that UMK3 vs pic with rainbow colors. That isn't fake, he was planned for UMK3 before appearing in Trilogy.

You could do multiple versions, each ninja transparent.
Or the MKA turquoise/aqua with grey skin. This one may be best if you can't do transparent. Plus he's probably more recognizable to the younger generations in his latest incarnation.

I do like that rainbow UMK3 art in the OP, though nowadays rainbow is more associated with gay pride. While I'm not gay, I like rainbows because I used to play with prisms n study optics.

He said he's using MKT for consistency so I think he's gonna make them palette swaps. If transparency is impossible, go for the subtle rainbow that includes black and gray. I'd buy it (if I have any money online)

Maybe a rainbow transitioning spectrum of
Grey, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Black?
Or better yet Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Black, Grey.
