The series has never really gone into detail as to how life after the invasion was like for the human race. The only thing that we know was done in response to the invasion was the creation of the Outer World Investigation Agency. In what other ways do you think life on Earth was affected?

I could imagine that Johnny Cage became even more famous after being revealed to be a real life action hero, if enough people, particularly those with cell phones, saw him in action. If not, then Johnny would be thought by many to be profiting from a real life tragedy by "pretending" he bravely fought during the invasion, though there'd be other celebs who would actually do that.

Complete distrust and hatred for otherworldly beings by many people, made even worse by the fact that some of the Outworlders looked completely human. You could expect racist portrayals in fictional stories, and real-life scumbags like Hitler and Genghis Khan being "revealed" in stories as coming from another world. Most myths, UFO sightings, etc might be taken much more seriously by even some of the most respected journalists. Good non-humans like Kitana, would be accused of pretending to be our allies. Parents would fear that their children are dating outworlders.

Tourism, at least with other realms thought to be friendly. And there'd be human supremacist groups thrying to sneak into other worlds in order to try and destroy them.

With now everyone on Earth in the know about other worlds and species, perhaps Raiden would make his existence, and the elder gods', known. Religions dedicated to them, particularly Raiden, would be created and have a mainstream impact. But fanatics of already existing religions would think Raiden and the elder gods are actually demons. Villains like Quan Chi could take advantage of such people. Onaga could even do to them what he did to Shujinko and pass himself as an angel (or a messenger or whatever), and convince them to try and unleash the One Being by passing it off as the god that they worship, that the demons (the elder gods) have imprisoned, and who needs their worshippers' help (religious fanatics can be vain like that).

These are only a few of the possibilities that come to mind. They could make for interesting stories and new characters in the future.

Johnny was dead after MK3. At least...for most of a decade. Then he suddenly came back and went right back to making movies like nothing was wrong. Probably told the public "I wasn't dead, I was just taking a sabbatical", "I was on vacation in a foreign country", "I tried to retire but couldn't stay gone, it was too boring", something like that.

And inter-realm tourism wouldn't be possible, portals aren't exactly common or open to the public. In fact, part of Sonya's MKDA story was that the OIA specifically found and destroyed every naturally-occurring portal on Earth, so that the only way to get to other realms would be their portal-machine.
That's why, when Hsu Hao blew up their base, Raiden had to lead everybody to that portal "known only to sorcerers and deities", it was the last one on Earth and a very well-kept secret. And to use it, you have to pass a test where you fight an illusion of "your worst enemy".
Granted, that was the old timeline. Another fact about the old timeline is that everyone on Earth fell down dead with their souls stolen the very moment the invasion started and they weren't revived until Kahn's castle and the portal were gone again, so they might not actually KNOW anything about what happened, there wouldn't be anything for them to remember about the invasion except that the entire world population mysteriously fell unconscious for several days.
And considering that a merger between worlds is a magical celestial event, who knows, maybe time STOPS during one? 'Cause, y'know, it's harder to smoosh two dimensions together if they're still moving. If everyone in the world's watches and clocks stopped because magic (like Sonya's compass spinning on Shang's Island in the movie), and the Earth stopped rotating too...then an astronomer couldn't even figure out any time had passed from the changing position of the stars. You wouldn't know you were dead for a week, you'd think you only blacked out for a few seconds or minutes instead. That's just wild speculation, though. It could be everyone was fully aware of how long they were out for. People also might have memories of their time as a disembodied spirit stuck inside the Soul Chamber or Kahn's body, but those would probably be as vaguely remembered as a dream or nightmare.
Hmm...wasn't there a network TV show a year or two ago with the plot "everyone on Earth blacked out for a significant period of time and are trying to solve the mystery of what happened during the time they can't remember"?)
Clearly, enough proof was left behind for the government to okay Sonya and Jax forming a taskforce devoted to preventing future alien threats, but that could all be classifed, it doesn't necessarily mean there was any evidence the general public knows about or believes in anything but rumors, superstitions, and conspiracies about what actually happened.
Although...every movie Cage has made since he got home from the first tournament have all been Mortal Kombat films where he plays himself (and portrays himself as the winner instead of Liu Kang). We don't know if he's putting a "based on a true story" tag on those though, and it's possible he never got around to adapting the events of the invasion specifically because that WOULD have been the "MK: The Death of Johnny Cage" movie he refused to make in his MKDA bio.
In the new timeline, on the other hand, everyone was conscious for and fully aware of the armies of monsters attacking, and the invasion left behind a fuck-ton of damage and Outworlder buildings in the middle of NYC. Kinda hard to ignore. So...we'll see how people react this time around.

I prefer to think that in the old timeline, people's souls were trapped inside the soul chamber (though Shao Kahn's body is also a possibility), and that they fully remembered it, if only because of the possibilities it offered storywise. Seeing as they never delved on it though, both outcomes (the entire human race knowing and them not knowing) were possible then. As for what you said about the government getting enough proof to greenlight the OWIA, I agree, if they had a captured enemy combatant (particularly an inhuman-looking one like a Tarkata or a Centaur), and/or met good aliens like Kitana, Sindel and Raiden, that would have been more than enough evidence.

But let's not make the whole thread about the old timeline and whether or not the human race as a whole knew. The new timeline has made it explicitly clear that this time around it definitely does know, so we can discuss the various possibilities. Though I could see the writers cook up some mass amnesia story just to avoid dealing with said possibilities, sadly.

Isn't Earthrealm supposed to be based on Earth? Like the MK universe has their own version of Earth, I could be wrong though.

Yes, Earthrealm is our Earth, or at least, "Earthrealm" is the name of the dimension the planet Earth resides in.

Sub-Zero and Liu Kang are from China, Scorpion is from Japan, MK3 takes place in New York City, Johnny Cage lives in Hollywood California, these are all real life places, obviously.

The difference between real life and the world of the games is that in the games, magic is real, although the general public doesn't know about or believe in the supernatural, that's why they think Johnny is a fraud: because for some damned reason he likes to use his actual magical-green-chi-energy special moves in his movies and the audience thinks it's stuntwork and CGI and they're all like "Dude, why does Cage keep doing the same weird moves in all his roles? These special effects don't belong in a kung fu movie, I liked it better when his films looked legit and he did real stunts like Jackie Chan."

Like...y'know how in a lot of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's early movie roles, he'd find some dumb reason to do the Rock Bottom or People's Elbow in the movie, for no good reason? Imagine if you're watching The Rundown and all of a sudden he gives Sean William Scott a wrestling move while his body is covered in sparkling blue magic energy. You'd be like "Why did a guy suddenly sparkle blue like a fucking wizard in the middle of this normal-ass action movie?"

But the MK Earth's history and society probably started radically diverging from that of the real world after MK3 because as a result of the invasion, the Earth now suddenly has proof that magic is real and alien monsters from other dimensions exist and are trying to conquer our planet.

That's what the thread is about.
