I want this to be an ongoing thread were we'll discuss a MK game in the main series each day. Just give a mini review of your thoughts. I want to do this to get us more hyped for the next game.

I will do this in chronological order starting with you guessed it, Mortal Kombat 1.

My thoughts

I never played the arcade version of this game. I couldn't find a rom and I never felt like paying 20 or so bucks to play it. So I played the snes rom which is the worst version you can get. So my opinion probably isn't worth much.

I liked the characters and the story especially compared to SF. The blood and gore was awesome for the time and it's still pretty cool today. I thought the level design was good being very Enter the Dragon esque. I also think having a sub-boss and final boss being unplayble and having special perks adds challenge and intrigue that most fighting games lack today.

My problem however, is the gameplay. I don't really get the roundhouse kick, and the forward high punch seemed useless as well. It also seems like the crouch block is too good when there is no overheads and the throw works when it feels like it. It also kind of sucks in comparison to SF2 which came out early and was just a way better game from a gameplay stand point.

I give it a 7.5/10. What do you think.

MK1 was awesome. I remember all the uproar over fatalities and how the children would all be turned into mass murderers. Luckily, my folks thought it was pretty cartoonish so they let me play it anyway. I loved this game. The feel, the characters and everything about it. I remember when it came out on SNES going to the video stores and looking at the box art with friends...then FINALLY getting the snes and the game to play at home. I even loved the manual that came with the game...especially the comic book excerpts in it. ahhhh...the memories.

Thats pretty awesome. I don't have any memories like that with MK1 so I was pretty objective when looking at the snes rom. I've heard that playing it for the first time on an arcade machine was really awesome though.
Keep in mind that the last time I played was a long time ago so 7/10 going on memory of the pc rip gameboy and nintendo versions.

Now onto MK2.

My favorite one in the series. I have played the hell out of the arcade version and the snes version. Both are really good.

Likes- Everything in this game seems like a huge improvement over the first game. More levels, more characters, more finishers, and more secrets. I really like the gameplay this time around. The round house kick and the influence of air combat gives it a different feel that is a little faster and smoother than MK1.

Dislikes- I didn't like how they left out Sonya and Kano. Maybe it was a memory problem, but it was still kind of lame. I also really hate the challenging AI. I do like challenge but the reflexes on the computer are just too quick. It can be fun, but overall I feel like I'm playing a cheap ass machine rather than a human. The story doesn't seem perfect as well. Why do the follow Shang into outworld? It just has bad idea written all over it. I do like the graphics, but I they don't seem better. They just seem like a different style rather than an improvement, and at times I actually miss the old style. My other problem is that the game feels defensive. It seems like a defensive player has an advantage. All of my complaints are really just nitpicks, and this is my favorite 2D game.

Loved everything except the A.I. can be too harsh at times. 9.5/10

Even from the early age of 7 I knew the original Mortal Kombat was nothing more than a novelty at best and Street Fighter 2 had substantially better gameplay.
5/10

While I feel MK2 is quite possibly the most overrated game in the series. I feel with the second release they really wanted the sequel to be a legitimate contender and and more complete product.

We'll get to the other games later, but I really loved the gameplay of MK2. It felt a lot smoother compared to MK1, and the combo system is really fucking good IMO. The combos were short and easy to remember. But they where still challenging to pull of and they still did a decent amount of damage. Not to mention that none of them where really set in stone. It was player creativity all the way.

I first encountered MKII in a dinky little video rental store that would set up one or two machines in the back. It replaced their SFII Hyper machine, which I'd spent a lot of time on button-mashing with Honda, and feeling invincible using Vega's FP to keep Zangief at bay, little kid that I was.

I was hooked right away. The characters, the music, the backgrounds, the atmosphere....everything was perfect. And the killings. Oh, the killings. Here was that naughty brutal game that made hooligans out of the harmless. Of course I was attracted.

I spent weeks watching and learning from the older players, gawked at the mysterious almighty printed move list (which included wonderfully faked ten-directional inputs for 'Nudealities' for Kitana and Mileena), and took loss upon loss until one day I beat the game with Kitana when nobody was around. Before long, I was beating the older kids. And exploring until I found an MK1 arcade machine, I got good there, too.

When the SNES version of MKII came out, I forgot all about sleep. That simple. I'd spend long stretches with a Game Genie on, forcing constant Jade, Smoke and Noob fights so I could learn how to take them down properly. I once fought Smoke for three hours straight (perhaps his current status as my fave MK character is a result of Stockholm syndrome).

It still remains my favorite MK, aesthetically speaking. Lord knows the gameplay isn't perfect, but it was a major leap forward. Took everything MK1 had and stepped it up a notch.

It hasn't aged all that well, I'll have to say that, unlike UMK3, which has, IMO. Aside from which, my only beef with it is that it started the trend of the series having really, really shitty AI: impossible to fight like a person, ridiculously stupid easy to beat using exploits. Except Kintaro. He remains my single favorite boss fight in any game ever.

Oh, and Reptile. God, MKII Reptile sucked so hard.

Mk2 was the game that got me into games. As I mentioned I had played MK1 in arcades and snes once I got one, but I lost a full year to MK2. The comics, gameboy port, snes port, and all the quarters fed into the arcade machine...wow...a lot of time and money went into mk2. My friends and I were just at the perfect age for this one, and from the awesome live action commercial on...we were hooked. I remember sneaking around a local bookstore trying to write down all the moves from the strategy guide without getting caught by the old lady who worked there...then staying up all night with the genesis at a friends or my snes trying to unlock EVERYTHING. good times. That's why this game has me so pumped up. I'd love to get as much of that feeling as I could (at my age) back.

The backgrounds, fatalities, character design...over all feel....fantastic. Love this one.

MK2 is so freakin overrated. It hasnt aged well at all, clunky garbage

MK3/UMK3: are the best, combos combos combos

mk4 was fun, people take shit too serious

the 3d's ones werent bad, but were lacking alot when it came to basic mechanics, still fun

But even even the worst mk was 1000 times better than sf's horrible "deep" glitch infested crap

MK9 will the title as the best fighter till the next one

14 more days....DAMNIT!!!!!!

Its MK3-Trilogy time

MK3

First, this game was the greatest change of the franchise. It introduced tech, techno, urban areas, dialed combos, and a meter. No other game in the series added so many new aspects that would carry over. I

Likes- I liked the inclusion of the run button. It made the game a little faster and more aggressive. The combat codes where fun but a little annoying at times. The dialed combos aren't bad, but they do take away a level of creativity. I have to say I love the music and levels. It feels so epic. It also has the best character select music hands down.

Dislikes- The roster. After MK2 seeing this roster makes you go huh? Its not the worst but it is close. No ninjas, no Raiden, and no ladies. WTF. The other big problem is all of the shit to memorize. Now you have to memorize dialed combos, fatalities, babalities, mercies, animalities, and friendships. Its just too damn much.

7.2/10

UMK3

Okay they fixed the roster, and they fixed a lot of gameplay problems. This is a tournament worthy game, and the MK game I played the most in elementary school. I love it.

9/10.

Trilogies

I don't really see the point of it after only three games and UMK3. Boss characters also make the game stupid. I aslo don't understand the aggressor thing, and the old sprites don't gel well with the new sprites. Ultimately it feels like a money maker that nobody cares about to this day.

7.9/10

So tell me what you guys think about the MK3 trilogy.

I posted this elsewhere, but it still holds true for me

I can't even begin to describe my disappointment with 3..a little bit of my soul died that die...and i finally understood the world was not fair. I left the arcade, drank a pot of black coffee, started smoking lucky strikes and got a job at a factory. My childhood was over.

so mk3....5/10

UMK was much much better, but still missing something for me. I'd give it a 7.5

Trilogy was just so slapdash. I don't know why its so big around here. MK2 and MK1 character sprites looked so outdated next to the newer sprites, and the aggressor system was just weird. I bought it for n64 because I didn't think I'd ever be able to get 1 or 2 again in arcade form (little did i know)...but I got bored with it pretty quickly. The goofy mk3 fatalities were everywhere and there was a ninja for every color under the sun. 7.5/10

Now onto Mortal Kombat 4

I didn't play this one that much and I only played the N64 version.

Likes- The first thing I like is the damage cap. I heard in this game a combo could do no more than 30 percent. That's kind of cool. The roster is ok. None of the new characters tickle my fancy. I like Tanya, Reiko, and Fujin, and thats it. The rest suck. Some of the levels and stages fatalities where cool like the fan room, and that room with all of the faces. And hey Goros back for some reason. Best game over screen of all time.

Dislike- Like I said earlier the roster kind of sucks. Kai, really? I don't really like the side step button. It makes avoiding things to easy. It should have had a penality of some kind. I don't really like the weapon system, it just feels gimicky especially to a series full of gimicks. The items that you pick up and throw is even worse.

Verdict: I like it, but it feels gimicky, and I don't care about the story or characters.

I liked MK4 a lot personally. After the techno sci-fi mess that was 3, it was nice to see some mystic elements return to the series. Sure, it was limited by the tech of the time...so the graphics weren't perfect and some of the backgrounds were simple, but this was probably the last classic MK. Quan Chi and Shinnok were good additions, and I liked Kai and Reiko as well. They really fleshed out the roster with Gold as well. The game played fast and smoothly IMO, and the fatalities were pretty good (before Gold when they got a bit repetitive) There were some issues that cannot be excused by the limits of the time...like the insanely loud blood sounds and the overdone gibberish yelling...but this game gave us alternates for the characters, a deeper mythos and for better or worse weapons and 3d gameplay. Frankly, this is probably as close in concept to MK9 as MK2 is, 3d graphics and for the most part 2d fighting. I dig it.

Time for one of my faves: Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance

Likes- The new 3D gameplay and dialed combos worked for me. I really liked the story and the roster. There where some shit characters but there was also a lot fo good ones. I feel like the fighting is pretty fast for a 3D fighter. The thing I liked the most was the krypt. This game was just packed with unlockable goodies and it gave me something to work for.

Dislikes- No combo breakers and no throw button. Those two additions would have helped a lot. The conquest mode kind of sucked, and there was a lot of throw away stuff in the krypt. Not too many other complaints.

Verdict: Super fun to unlock stuff, and very easy to get sucked in.

DA was OKAY, but didn't feel like mortal kombat. Too many things changed too quickly with this one to feel like you're playing a familiar series. Completely revamped 3d gameplay, fighting styles, no uppercoat or throw, weapons...meh. The dial-a-combos were also sometimes frustratingly hard to do. I played it for a month then moved on to other things.

The story was good, the feel was good, but the character designs were WAY too cartoony and limited finishers kind of made them get old very quickly.

I am conflicted on this one, I want to like it because of the positives but always end up thinking it is mediocre when I'm playing it.
